Advancing Upstream: Philanthropy's Aspirations for Social Justice

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This study explores how grantmakers conceptualize their work with respect to issues of social justice. It seeks to answer two primary questions: What role, if any, does the philanthropic community ascribe to itself in not just ameliorating but helping solve our greatest social challenges? And if philanthropy does see itself as an agent of change, what are the barriers that limit its potential? After painting a portrait of contemporary American philanthropy, this paper applies Iris Marion Young's critique of distributive justice to philanthropy's dilemma between downstream charitable aid and upstream structural change. The thesis then turns to analysis of semi-structured interviews with eighteen of Arizona's foundation leaders to assess whether and how state-level philanthropic leaders see their work vis-á -vis social justice, and understand how external factors limit philanthropy's ability to effect maximum social change. Participants express a desire to engage in genuinely meaningful philanthropy which does more than just maintain the status quo, but identify multiple constraints, including legal barriers to fully utilizing advocacy as a tool, governmental infringement on philanthropic autonomy, the channeling of philanthropic resources toward basic needs as a result of the recession, and a grantmaking orientation that prioritizes short term programs that yield swift, measurable results as opposed to longer term efforts. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Evaluating the impact of philanthropic activities in public high schools in Mutasa District, Zimbabwe : an educational management perspective

Madziyire, Godfrey Tapfumaneyi 03 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of philanthropic interventions in public high schools in Mutasa district of Zimbabwe. Three research questions guided the study. The investigation focused on finding out the types of philanthropic interventions in the public high school and to evaluate their impact on the schools and students involved from an educational management perspective. The investigation was a mixed methods research using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data was collected by questionnaire, interview and documentary sources. Principals of twenty nine high schools responded to a questionnaire. Interview data was gathered from two representatives of non-governmental organisations. One NGO also provided documents for more data. Two individual philanthropists from the district were also interviewed. The results of the study indicate that philanthropic interventions have made significant improvements to the physical infrastructure of some schools. During the 2014 study there were about 700 students from poor backgrounds on various school fees assistance programmes. School enrolment and completion rates have increased. School drop-outs have decreased. Over 6 500 former beneficiaries of fees from one donor organisation have formed an alumni association to assist other children in disadvantaged circumstances. It is strongly recommended that schools in the district and elsewhere use online social network platforms to organise alumni associations from a wider catchment area beyond national borders. Alumni associations are a potentially rich source of philanthropic revenue hardly tapped in the district. Schools should create their own websites to be exposed to a global audience of donors for possible funding of their projects. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Ed. (Education Management)

Political and social realities are determining factors in the explanation of the predominance of certain charity and social assistance models. In the Portuguese Kingdom the social assistance system followed the evolution of the European model, based on Christian values, in which the community was in charge of responding to social problems. Based on the Enlightment philosophy, apart from technical scientific issues in search of economic progress or guarantees for territorial frontiers, after the transfer of the Royal Court to Brazil and especially after Independence, an awakening is observed as to Brazil.s social reality, in which State agency in social assistance issues was tied not only to the preoccupation that such care would not be devolved to the State itself but also to the policy of maintaining traditional order. With such in mind, this research seeks to reveal the behavior of the Brazilian Constitutional Monarchy as to public social aid at the moment of organizing her legal and administrative foundations. The main sources that grounded these were the Leis e Decisões de Governo do Império do Brasil de 1822 a 1834 (Laws and Decisions of the Government of the Empire of Brazil from 1822 to 1832), the analysis of which enabled dimensioning the changes in the conception of the State.s responsibilities and the discourse it produced on itself, revealing the tight relation between poverty, disorder, work and the development of a moral, therefore, between the intimacy of the social assistance issue and the concerns of the State.

Sousa, Raquel Santos 30 September 2010 (has links)
This study aims to understand what drives individuals to engage specifically in mobilizing the fight against childhood cancer in the city of Aracaju, Sergipe, with the field of analysis and research volunteer leaders and not leaders of the Association of Voluntary Service of Oncology Sergipe (AVOSOS) and the Support Group for Children with Cancer of Sergipe (GACC / SE), two institutions that provide social services and which are characterized as philanthropic and nonprofit organizations. The survey sought to identify, through a case study with eighteen participants, the mechanisms and social logics that are related to a type of political engagement. Making use of exploratory research was used to collect and analyze data from a combination of technical case studies designed to investigate the trajectories of social activists and participant observation. The work discussed in the first chapter the history of social practices in Brazil, considering the changes in ways of doing philanthropy and relationship with this new type of political activism. In the second and third chapters are investigated respectively the social characteristics in the various individual agents who conducted the investigation for the cause of cancer, their justifications, meanings and reasons which lead them to invest more intensively in this type of mobilization. The results indicate combinations of variables that involve the political context, elements of family socialization, education, especially religious and the presence of formal and informal social networks. Among the main considerations that we identified that the interest in participating in the mobilization for the cause of cancer, may vary the trajectories and the combination of resources which structure configurations of the political practices of each participant, and the meanings that the engagement will to represent these.
