New semi-conducting hybrid materials for organic electroluminescent diodes

Sergent, Alessandra 08 February 2013 (has links)
This work deals with the synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of lanthanide-containing metallopolymers to use them as active components in electroluminescent diodes. The emission properties of trivalent lanthanides are particularly interesting in the case of our application. The conjugated chain polymer built up with charge-transport groups. These materials should provide all the properties (conduction and emission) to be used as active layer in PLEDs (Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes) which are devices made by solution deposition techniques. The PLEDs offer the advantage to have a simplified structure in comparison with OLEDs (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) which are built by juxtaposition of layers constituted by small organic molecules. The syntheses of three series of conjugated polymers have been achieved. The polymerization reaction has been carried out by a Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling between fluorenes moieties and monomers bearing carbazole and/or benzimidazole groups acting as a coordinating site for the lanthanide ion. Several metallopolymers were also synthesized. The isolated compounds were characterized by NMR, elemental analyses, and GPC. Photophysical studies have been performed on all the polymers and metallopolymers. Finally, these compounds have been used for the design of electroluminescent devices.

Oligo-and Polyfluorenes of Controlled Architecture for Applications in Opto-electronics

Ego, Christophe 27 June 2005 (has links)
Polyfluorenes are polymers with outstanding properties: They are semi-conducting, relatively rigid, quite stable chemically and thermally, easily substituted and therefore potentially soluble in numerous solvents and more importantly, they exhibit blue electro- and photoluminescence. For all these reasons, these polymers are the subjects of numerous academic and industrial researches. The first subject of this work deal with the design, the synthesis and the characterisation of polyfluorenes end-capped with perylene dicarboximide derivatives. These perylene moieties are able to interact by energy transfer under specific conditions of illumination, proximity and orientation. Their observation by single molecule spectroscopy permitted therefore to gain valuable information concerning the three-dimensional folding of single polyfluorene chains. To complete this study, the synthesis and characterisation of a perylene end-capped trimer of fluorene was performed. This structure being monodisperse, a finer analysis of the energy-transfer occurring between both perylene dyes could be accomplished, which confirmed the structural hypothesis made for the polymer. During these studies, it has been observed that, in addition to the energy transfer occurring between both perylene derivatives, another energy transfer occurs between the polyfluorene backbone and the perylene derivatives upon excitation of the first. This led to the idea of the synthesis of a polyfluorene bearing perylenes dicarboximide as side chains. This perylene-rich polyfluorene has been used to build a photovoltaic cell efficient in the wavelengths of both polyfluorene absorption and perylene carboximide absorption. Another subject of this work was the design, synthesis and characterisation of polyfluorenes bearing bulky phenoxy groups as side-chains. These polymers, due to their lower tendency toward aggregation, exhibited a better stability of their emission colour upon annealing. Similarly, a series of homo- and copolymers of fluorene bearing bulky and hole accepting triphenylamine substituants was synthesised and characterised. In addition to their improved colour stability in comparison with dialkylpolyfluorenes, the LEDs build with these materials exhibited a very low turn on voltage.

Correia, Fábio Conte 13 July 2009 (has links)
Polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been heavily researched since their initial fabrication and utilization. In order to improve the efficiency of polymeric light-emitting devices, new materials have been studied. This present study focuses in the preparation of new copolymers by Suzuki coupling reaction and then evaluate the copolymers as active layer in PLEDs. It is well known that the performance of PLEDs is still limited by the number of electron/hole recombination. To overcome this problem, a new material is proposed to integrate the functions of n charge carrier and light emission through copolymerization. Novel copolymers were synthesized and characterized by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry, UVVis, Fluorescence and IR spectroscopy, GPC and cyclic voltammetry. Copolymers thus prepared were used as active layer in a series of PLEDs with different architectures, pure and in blends with poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), as well as with tris-8 hydroxyquinoline aluminum (Alq3) as an extra electron transport layer. The devices were characterized concerning their electrical behavior, by the characteristic J-V diode curves, and their electroluminescence. It was demonstrated that the PLEDs built with the synthesized copolymers do not need an extra ETL.

Electron transport layer study in polymeric light emission devices.

Gimaiel, Helena Liberatori 15 October 2008 (has links)
This work has the objective to study charge carried layers, especially of electrons, in polymer light emitting devices (PLEDs). These devices are obtained basically by polymer emissive layer deposition between two electrodes. Polymer luminescent devices show advantages when compared to conventional LEDs, such as the thin displays manufacture possibility, with low cost of manufacture and flexible. The PLEDs efficiency is closely linked the commercialization feasibility these displays. In this work, the first structure fabricated is composed by the deposition of OC1C10 PPV - [poly(2-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)-5-(2\'-methoxy-1,4-phenylene vinylene)] emissive polymer film between the anode ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) and the aluminum cathode. On the transparent electrode ITO the polymer OC1C10-PPV and Al are deposited as a film through spin coating and thermic evaporation techniques, respectively. In other step, samples were fabricated with a differentiated structure, which films layers related to charges transport were introduced and increase efficiency device. These layers are responsible for reduction of potential barrier between polymer emissive and the electrodes and they can confine a higher number of holes in the emissive layer. This imply in an increase of electrons and hole population in active layer, producing a higher luminous emission. Finally, different Alq3 concentrations were added to solution of the OC1C10-PPV, resulting in compost OC1C10-PPV:Alq3 used as active layer, that increase the luminous efficiency more 10 times than the devices fabricated in first stage of this work. The use polymer PEDOT:PSS Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): Poly(StyreneSulfonate) as hole transport layer (HTLs) deposited between the aluminum and the polymer electroluminescent showed essential to operation of devices produced, avoiding the short circuit between electrodes.

Fabricação e caracterização de dispositivos poliméricos emissores de luz com camada ativa de poli(2-metóxi, 5-(2\'-etil-hexilóxi)-1,4-fenileno vinileno) (MEH-PPV) / Fabrication and characterization of polymer light-emitting diodes with active layer composed by poly(2-methoxy, 5-(2\'-etil-hexilhoxy)-1,4-phenilene vinilene) (MEH-PPV).

Polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been widely investigated as candidate materials for display fabrication. The main advantages exhibited by PLEDs are the low-cost processing and possibility of large-area display fabrication, in comparison to the conventional liquid crystal displays (LCD\'s). Although the engineering aspects concerning device fabrication and characterization are well understood, some specific points regarding the electrical transport in the bulk and at the interfaces of the devices are not fully explained. In this study, we present a morphological, optical and electrical characterization of PLEDs containing poly(2-methoxi, 5-(2\'-etyl-hexiloxy)-1,4-phenilene vinilene) (MEH-PPV) as the emissive layer. We investigated the influence of hole transport layers (HTL) and/or electron transport layers (ETL) on the efficiency of the devices. The HTL and ETL comprised thin polymeric films of poly(3,4-etylenedioxythiphene):sulfonated polystyrene (PEDOT:PSS) and poly(estyrene-co-p-sulfonated styrene-co-metyl metacrylate) (PS-co-SS-co-MMA), respectively. Devices containing the PEDOT:PSS exhibited a life-time 10 times higher than the devices not containing the HTL material, which is probably due to the controlled hole injection that may be achieved in former devices. In the second set of devices, in which an ETL was incorporated, we observed the formation of localized states in the polymeric ETL layer, which was responsible for improving the tunneling process of charges injected from cathode. A theoretical model concerning the charge injection mechanisms in the PLEDs containing MEH-PPV is presented in chapter 4. The final device architecture was ITO/MEH-PPV/Al, and the J vs. F measurements were taken at temperatures between 120 K and 270 K. The model proposed here is a combination of the Arkhipov´s and Fowler-Nordhein tunneling models, considering a Gaussian distribution of triangular potential barriers. The model takes into account the charge carrier/image charge recombination probability at the interface of the electrode, being very appropriate to explain the dependence of the electric current on the temperature and applied electric field.

/ Doctorat en sciences, Spécialisation chimie / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished
