Ore mineralogy and paragenesis of a portion of the Great Gossan Lead district, Virginia

Henry, Donald Kenneth 28 July 2010 (has links)
The Great Gossan Lead is a Ne-Sw trending belt of sulfide mineralization extending over 28 kilometers through Carroll and Grayson Counties in southwestern Virginia. The zone, which occurs in the metamorphic Late Precambrian Ashe formation, consists of a series of an echelon mineralized pods which pinch and swell irregularly along strike and are essentially concordant with the foliation. Ore mineralogy is dominated by hexagonal pyrrhotite with minor amounts of sphalerite and chalcopyrite. All other phases--galena, arsenopyrite, pyrite, cubanite, mackinawite, tetrahedrite, stannite, and native bismuth--are disseminated throughout the ores. Pyrite is locally common as corroded primary euhedrae in some are bodies. Sphalerite occurs as disseminated anhedral aggregates commonly containing oriented lamellae and blebs of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. Chalcopyrite and galena occur as disseminated grains and as veinlets squeezed into fractured gangue minerals. A strongly developed metamorphic fabric, the absence of mineral zoning, and the presence of a zone of iron depletion surrounding the ores indicate that the ores and host rocks have been subject to the same metamorphism. At a thermal maximum of 4l5-455°C, the ore assemblage would have developed a sulfur activity of approximately 10-9 to 10-7 atm. and would have been subject to an oxygen activity of about 10 -25 to 10 -27 atm. The Great Gossan Lead is interpreted to have formed either as synsedimentary deposits or massive pyritic volcanism. Later metamorphism to the epidote-amphibolite facies and subsequent deformation roduced the present mineral assemblage and deformation features. / Master of Science

Patienters uppfattningar av e-hälsotjänsten PODS- Patient Online Decision System

Sandin, Christina, Tellbe, Johanna January 2016 (has links)

Investigation into the pedagogical value of demonstrating deliberate design deficiencies in PCB design instruction

Sunedal, Björn January 2021 (has links)
Universities and other higher education institutions have been struggling with high levels of student dropouts and poor graduation rates for a long time. As a result, there has been an interest in modifying traditional teaching techniques and implementing new ones to improve student learning outcomes. Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILD) is one such teaching technique which has shown positive results in terms of improving student learning outcomes. An audio recorder and player application with the addition of a DC/DC converter was developed. Six different PCB versions of the audio application were created, containing different combinations of deliberate design deficiencies. The deliberate design deficiencies came in the form of different configurations of decoupling capacitors and ground planes. The DC/DC converter served as a noise source to expose weaknesses in the design. In order to make certain that design deficiencies were exposed effectively, the conversion frequency of the DC/DC converter was switchable between a "high" and a "low" setting. The "low" conversion frequency setting was chosen to comfortably fall in the frequency range of human hearing. Measurements of voltage (time domain and spectral), current spectrum, audio spectrum and radiated emissions were collected. Audio recordings illustrating the impact of decoupling capacitors and interference from the DC/DC converter were performed. The measurement results and audio recordings were used to produce an ILD in video format. The ILD was structured around a modified version of the PODS (Predict-Observe-Discuss-Synthesize) model, which is a four-step process used in ILDs. The ILD contained four separate demonstrations that covered the impact of decoupling capacitors, ground topology and the DC/DC converter on the audio quality and radiated emissions. The ILDs were presented in such a way that the measurement results and audio recordings were correlated with the underlying design theory. Students who had taken either one of two courses related to PCB and electronics design offered at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in the spring of 2019 and 2020 were invited to view the ILD video. The effectiveness of the ILD presentation in terms of pedagogic value was measured via a survey which the students were asked to fill out after watching the video. The results were overall very positive. The feedback received indicate that the students found the demonstrations to be informative and educational. By being able to see and hear the effects of neglecting good PCB design practices in two key areas, the demonstrations were able to provide a more realistic and real-world view of the consequences of neglecting to adhere to good design practices in these two areas that may not be apparent in the theoretical literature. In addition, since PCB design is such a vast subject, the results motivates further developments and study of the ILD concept related to other PCB design concepts such as transmission lines, layer ordering, signal integrity (crosstalk, timing, noise, etc), and others.

Parent Choice: Learning Pods or Public Education During COVID-19 Pandemic

Kinney, Shari 01 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine the decision-making process of K-12 parents living in the Appalachian Highlands who chose to remove their children from traditional public schools to join learning pods (sometimes referred to as pandemic pods) during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to answer this overarching question, the researcher focused her study on two areas: first, what were the possible push factors that influenced parents to remove their children from public schools, and secondly, what were the pull factors that lead parents to choose learning pods over other school choice options. Through the data collected from 10 one-on-one interviews, the researcher hoped to either confirm or refute whether or not parents residing in the Appalachian Highlands were influenced by these push and pull factors, and if so, to what extent they impacted their decision to remove their children from their pre-pandemic public schools, and enroll them in learning pods. All interviews were coded twice, deductively and inductively, and from the data analysis, 16 themes emerged across five categories: emotions experienced by parents, decision-making, push factors, pull factors, and experiences.

Melt pond depth retrieval applying airborne spectral imaging and the potential of a new RGB band approach

Rosenburg, S., Jäkel, E., Wendisch, M. 08 December 2023 (has links)
Melt ponds are important features on summer Arctic sea ice leading to a surface albedo reduction and thereby altering the energy budget. Besides the spatial pond coverage, the melt pond depth is of importance in context of meltwater volume distribution across the sea ice surface. In this study, the melt pond depth is retrieved based on airborne reflectance measurements performed in the framework of an Arctic field campaign. An already existing approach uses the spectral reflectance slope and is widely independent of the pond ice bottom reflectance contribution. However, the surface coverage of the imaging spectrometer, providing the required spectrally resolved information, is limited due to the narrow field of view. To capture a larger number of melt ponds, a commercial digital camera with fisheye-lens provides reflectances in the red, green, and blue (RGB) spectral ranges. To retrieve the melt pond depth a new RGB band approach was developed and validated by the established spectral retrieval approach. The depth deviation of the approaches ranged between 0.1 cm and 27.6 cm depending on prior information on the pond ice bottom reflectance.

Enhancing Privacy in Social Matching through Mixnets and Solid Pods : A Comparative Study of Privacy Enhancing Technologies / Förbättring av integritet i social matchning genom Mixnets och Solid Pods : En jämförande studie av integritetsförbättrande teknologier

Lindeborg, Andreas, Ödquist, Klara January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores the integration of Mixnet and Solid Pods to enhance privacy within a social matching service, demonstrating their effects on system performance and privacy. Mixnet is used for anonymous electronic communication and Solid Pods is used for decentralized data storage. We implemented two versions of our social matching service, a baseline version using Solid Pods and an privacy-enhanced version which utilize Solid Pods and Mixnet. We conducted three types of tests. The first test was a comparison on latency between the baseline and the privacy-enhanced version. The second test was a performance test that measured the time taken to save varying amounts of user preferences. Lastly we also did privacy tests using Wireshark to analyze network traffic, including the number and sizes of packets for the baseline and privacy-enhanced version. Our results indicate that while the privacy-enhanced version improves data security it also significantly increases latency. This highlights a fundamental tradeoff, while privacy enhancements like Mixnet provide improved data protection, it also reduce system responsiveness, potentially affecting usability. These findings are important for the ongoing debate on how to balance privacy enhancements with system performance and point towards the need for further research to continue develop these technologies to enhance user experience without compromising privacy.
