Early-stage French as a foreign language in Taiwan : a case study involving L2 oral proficiency, motivation and social presence in synchronous computer mediated communication (CMC)Ko, Chao-Jung January 2010 (has links)
This study, adopting a case study approach with a group of beginning-level FFL (French as a foreign language) learners, investigated the possibility that initial level foreign language learners may acquire oral skills through synchronous CMC, and the impacts of synchronous CMC learning on their motivation, as well as their social presence. The participants were 12 FFL beginners in a Taiwanese university. Divided into three groups, they were required to conduct three tasks in three different learning environments (video/audio, audio and f2f) during an academic semester (18 weeks). The semester constituted cycles of three-week practices on those tasks. The contents of the tasks were inter-connected. Before each oral task, all the participants had to conduct the same task in synchronous text chat. The data for this study was collected from the participants’ performance in three oral tests held at the initial, middle and final phases of the study, their online chat records, interview transcriptions, learning journal, questionnaires completed at the beginning and the end of the study, and the instructor’s observation journal. The results suggest that these three CMC learning modes bring only partial benefits in terms of learners’ oral proficiency development. It is factors generated by the three learning environments, rather than the environments themselves, that have the largest impact on the learners’ oral proficiency development, learning motivation and attitudes towards the target language. However, the differences in the environments are reflected in particular in the learners’ perception of social presence.

Derrida's Objection To The Metaphysical TraditionWheat, Christopher A 01 January 2015 (has links)
Derrida’s deconstruction of the philosophic tradition shows us not only the importance of pursuit of knowledge, but also the importance of questioning the assumptions on which such a pursuit is based. He argues that the metaphysical tradition is built from the privileging of the logos (speech, thought, and logic,) over it’s opposite, and while Derrida does not object to the societal results of such a privileging, he questions why we allow ourselves to make such an assumption in the investigation of the origin event, and in the nature of reality.
I chose to study deconstruction because through the course of my studies at Claremont I found myself raising similar objections to the philosophic tradition, and have a great interest in the arts and culture resulting from deconstructionist philosophy. Through my study I’ve learned to better examine not only the reasons for my own interest in philosophy and the arts, but the importance (or un-importance) of such a pursuit. I believe Derrida’s work could be important in teaching us the absurdity of sacred pursuit, and the importance of finding said sacredness in everything.

The Awareness of Computer-Mediated Communication's Social Presence for Virtual High School StudentsBigley, Heather 22 March 2012 (has links)
This research investigated the perception of social presence that students in a virtual high school have of using computer-mediated communication (CMC): email, discussion board, tutoring sessions, and asynchronous classroom activities. The research analyzed data for social presence based on gender, years of experience in a cyber school, and self-proficiency ratings on each form of CMC. The purpose of this study was to identify if high school students in a virtual community perceive email, discussion board, tutoring sessions and asynchronous classroom activities as enhancing their social presence within the virtual community. The findings of the study are:
<br>1. Students perceived that email showed more social presence than the other forms of CMC and asynchronous classroom activities showed more social presence than discussion board and tutoring sessions.
<br>2. There was no significant difference found between male and females social presence in any of the CMC studied.
<br>3. Students who rate their own self proficiency as being above average or expert had higher social presence scores on email and asynchronous classroom activities than students who rate their proficiency average, below average or novice.
<br>4. Students perceived that email showed more social interaction than discussion board, tutoring session and asynchronous classroom activities. Asynchronous classroom activities showed more social interaction than discussion board or tutoring sessions.
<br>5. The number of years a student attends a cyber school has no relationship with the student's perceived social presence in any form of CMC studied.

mechanisms in installation practice can evoke (in present time) past events and experiences previously absent. In the research, memory is revealed as having the capacity to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, acting as a powerful catalyst that connects a viewer's awareness of a past experience to the visible
objects experienced through a visual installation.

This art project explores issues of unoccupied space. In particular, the project concerns itself with temporal aspects of site and issues of past, present and potential usage. This space, otherwise inert, invites activation by the spectator's psychological projections. This projected occupation calls on redolence of the past, memory and a sense of the utility of the site.Based on imagery evidence and personal remembered experience, the spectator provides context forthis site. The project uses the painting process to open up areas of sensibility around personal and remembered experience.The thesis is constituted as practice-based work, 80%, accompanied by an exegesis, 20%.

Utilizou-se a abordagem fenomenológica do tipo socioexistencial, proposta por Alfred Schütz considerando o desejo de revelar a característica típica de um grupo social que vive determinada situação. Os sujeitos foram nove gestantes conduzidas à maternidade em falso trabalho de parto. A entrevista foi norteada pelas questões: Quais os motivos que a levaram a procurar a maternidade? Conte-me a sua trajetória até a chegada aqui e qual a sua expectativa quando chegar o momento do trabalho de parto?. Os discursos foram submetidos a análise idiográfica e nomotética, emergindo do fenômeno as categorias: A crença em que está em trabalho de parto devido aos sinais/sintomas percebidos, A influencia de outros na procura pela assistência obstétrica, A dependência dos sistemas de apoio como influência na decisão, A busca pela tranqüilidade devido ao medo e insegurança sentidos, A busca pelo término da gestação e ocorrência do parto. Na relação social intersubjetiva de mulheres inseridas em um espaço comum de experiência, a vivência do final da gestação representa uma transformação no seu fazer cotidiano, seu comportamento e relacionamento social. Ao refletirem seus motivos porque, revelam uma riqueza de valores e crenças pessoais que constituem sua bagagem de conhecimentos adquiridos em suas experiências vividas. A presença da dor ou o temor de sentí-la mobilizam a ação de institucionalizar-se, garantindo a segurança que a relação face a face com os profissionais proporciona. A sua estrutura se dividirá de acordo com o que se supõe ser - do ponto de vista da recepção do espectador - o aspecto central de seus filmes: de um lado, Green conduzirá o seu espectador a se relacionar com o filme pela via da \"leitura\"; de outro, pela via do \"empirismo\". Essa importante distinção dará início a uma série de desdobramentos que serão tratados ao longo da análise de dez cenas selecionadas dos seus dois primeiros longas metragens: Toutes les nuits (2001) no primeiro capítulo e Le Monde vivant (2003) no segundo. Na conclusão da dissertação, trataremos ainda de uma questão suscitada a partir da colocação, lado a lado, dos dois filmes acima citados. / This dissertation is a study of Eugène Green\'s films. Its structure will be divided according to what we suppose to be - in terms of the spectator\'s reception - the central aspect of his films: on one hand, Green will lead the spectator to establish with the film a connection based on the \"reading\"; on the other hand, a connection based on the \"experience\".
