Global summation of radial frequency patterns and the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination

ABSTRACT Global summation of radial frequency patterns and the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of global pooling around the circumference of the Radial frequency (RF) pattern, and to study the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination. The RF stimuli were generated by the amplitude modulation of the radius of a circle which deforms them from circularity, while the cross sectional luminance profile was the fourth derivative of Gaussians (D4). The amplitude of the stimuli determines how distinct the pattern is and thus measures the degree of sensitivity while the radial frequency determines the number of lobes the pattern has. In the first part of the study, whole RF patterns (RF3 to RF16) and open component fractions (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75), which are incomplete sectors of the whole, were tested against their respective reference unmodulated patterns. Subjects were tasked with discriminating minute deviations from their reference patterns. In the second part of the study, high contrast (20 X detection threshold) RF3 and RF4 contours and equivalent low contrast (5 X detection threshold) RF3 and RF4 contours were used as stimuli. Shape discrimination threshold for the high contrast target was determined with and without sudden onset glare. The result of the first part of the study showed that threshold decreased significantly as larger component RF patterns were tested (p < 0.05). The decrease could not be accounted for by the probabilistic sampling of local filters (probability summation). The result of the second part of the study showed that shape discrimination threshold increased with sudden onset glare. The increase was even more pronounced with lower mean luminance and when smaller fractions of the contours were tested. Shape discrimination threshold was significantly higher with high contrast contours in the presence of glare than equivalent low contrast contours, indicating that the veiling luminance model alone could not account for a decrease in visual performance in this shape discrimination task.

Nursing students' attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and intent regarding implementation of gerontological competencies

Background: There is a growing need for skilled gerontological nursing care. Nursing students often fail to appreciate the importance of implementing gerontological nursing competencies. Purpose: The problem is that nursing education research on students' attitudes about gerontology has been hampered by a lack of valid and reliable instruments. Theoretical framework. This study is based on and tests the propositions of the theory of planned behavior. Methods. Qualitative interviews were conducted to determine the terms used to describe the constructs by the target population. Using these terms, an instrument was developed and subjected to tests for psychometric estimates. A pretest-posttest design was used to test the impact of an educational intervention on students' attitudes. Results. The instrument demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity. Students' scores increased significantly for attitude, subjective norm and behavioral intention regarding implementing gerontological competencies from pretest to posttest. Attitude and subjective norm predicted behavioral intention in the regression model. Conclusions: The results support that an educational intervention can positively impact nursing students' intent to implement gerontological competencies.

The application and evaluation of goal attainment scaling to the Janis drug treatment program

Janis is a residential drug treatment program for drug abusers between the ages of twelve and eighteen deigned to rehabilitate the participants. Five homes, each staffed by two trained residential coordinators and one student accommodate a total of thirty patients at a time. The treatment program consists of daily house meetings led by the residential coordinators, one group therapy session per week led by a psychiatric social worker, and individual therapy sessions with a psychiatrist as needed, as well as regular consultation with a psychologist and psychiatrist. The adolescents enrolled in the program are referred from a variety of agencies, including the Multnomah County Juvenile Court and Home, the Psychiatric Crisis Unit operated by the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, and other out-patient treatment centers in Portland. Only those adolescents who are motivated to change their behavior are accepted into the Janis program.

The Group Process Questionnaire (GPQ), a 55-item rating scale, was developed by Richard Wollert in 1981 to assess perceptions of the frequency of processes occurring in self-help groups (SHGs). The GPQ was first employed by Wollert, Eakins, and Dixon (Note 1) as the primary data collection instrument in an ongoing investigation of urban SHGs. This investigation is one of a small number of empirical studies which have attempted to specify the range of SHG activities. Due to the relatively recent emergence of SHGs as topics of research, and the unique obstacles to research presented by the independent character of these groups, previous discussions of their methods of operation have been primarily theoretical and impressionistic in nature.

Identifying Intimate Partner Violence during Pregnancy in Prenatal Care Settings

More than 324,000 women each year are estimated as having experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy. Correctly identifying women experiencing all forms and severity of IPV is necessary to inform the implementation of interventions to prevent and treat IPV. This can optimally be accomplished with data from accurate screening instruments. The United States Preventative Services Task force has recently recommended that all women who are pregnant should be screened for IPV over the course of their pregnancy and postnatal visits. Currently, clinical practice and research are hindered by the lack of validated IPV screening measurements for a pregnant population. The current review examined accuracy measures of empirically tested IPV screening measures, and evaluated them for use in prenatal health care settings. Based on the information collected and presented, recommendations regarding which screens are, and are not, appropriate to use in prenatal care settings to identify IPV were presented. Further rigorous studies are needed to identify and evaluate screening measurements and procedures to increase sensitivity and suitability for use in a variety of clinical settings for pregnant women.
