Archaeology and the community : constructing bridges for the knowledge of the past in Kaminaljuyu, Guatemala CityLinares Palma, Adriana Maria 30 September 2014 (has links)
Based on archaeological excavations at Kaminaljuyu mound E-III-5 and educational workshops at the public school “Delia Luz Gutierrez de Castellanos”, this paper explores how children position themselves in relation to their surroundings and how knowledge of the ancient past and their relationship to it varies when they are exposed to archaeological excavations. I focus on the perception of the archaeological site of Kaminaljuyu and its relationship to the social and political-educational discourses that are associated with Guatemalan national archaeological projects. The hypothesis is that archaeological sites in Guatemala are used to promote a national identity that encourages tourism consumption of “exotic” ancient Mayas, which is totally disconnected from contemporary Mayan indigenous peoples’ movements and local communities’ interests. This represents the first systematic study and initial investigation of these issues in the Guatemalan highlands, and I hope that it will serve as a platform for an activist archaeology in Guatemala that looks to socialize the production of archaeological knowledge to those who do not have access to private education, and to continue discussions on challenges of academia for social justice and its impacts on the population. / text

Experiences working with high school literary magazines: a grounded theory studyWicklund Whiteside, Lisa 13 April 2015 (has links)
This qualitative research study focuses on the experiences of, and effects on, students and staff who work with literary magazine projects at the high school level. The goal of the study was to better understand how literary magazines benefit students, and how the experiences of working on a lit mag project, contributing to a lit mag, reading a school’s lit mag might be beneficial to students and how it might be improved, both for those working with the lit mag and culture of writing in the school. Using a grounded theory research method, interviews were conducted with both staff and students who were involved in their school’s literary magazines. Semi-structured interviews were used as a way for participants to discuss what they perceived as strengths of their projects and areas for continued growth. Eight interviews were completed, which were then transcribed, fact checked, and analysed using a rigorous process of coding. Five major conclusions were arrived at and have been presented in this thesis as practical implications to help others start—or develop—a literary magazine at their school.

Modernizing landscape design extension resourceLuan, Jianqiao January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources / Cheryl R. Boyer / Gregory L. Davis / Kansas State University Research and Extension is an educational network sharing unbiased, research-based information and expertise with Kansas residents. To improve quality of life, residential landscape design is an important educational topic for homeowners. The objective of this project is to update a Kansas State University Research and Extension Publication, Residential Landscape Design (publication number: S-4), which was published in 1980. Content, text and graphics need to be updated to address contemporary learner needs. An updated resource also needs to display a modern aesthetic, since the original graphics were created almost four decades ago. In order to understand the process and experience of updating an educational landscape design resource, similar publications from other land-grant universities were reviewed. This study discusses, compares, and contrasts the contents, range of page numbers, graphic styles, color, publication versions, and publication date among other similar types of university Extension publications.

Histoire et théories de l'édition critique des textes modernes en France, du XIXe siècle à nos jours, du papier au numérique / History and theories of modern texts in France's critical edition, since xixe century to our days, since paper to digital technologyBreuil, Eddie 27 November 2015 (has links)
The history and theory of the critical edition of ancient, medieval and Judeo-Christian texts have been extensively studied, whereas the origins, developments, principles, debates, practices and achievements of the modern critical editions have been little examined, especially in France. Unlike in Germany and in England, it has only been studied in the form of ad hoc interventions, through articles whose main intent is to justify a personal initiative. Today, the advent of digital technologies retrospectively draws attention to the historicity of the whole sector, and to the critical importance of the form it has taken, of the materiality and of its economy. It leads to observe and to think about the effects of the information and communication technologies’ revolution: is it a purely material progress, in terms of quantity and speed, or is it the beginning of cultural and intellectual changes akin to those which resulted from book printing? It is time for literary research to deal with this blind spot though experiments in digital publishing and computing research and insights into the history of books and reading as well as communication sciences. Experiments with digital publishing made in foreign countries will be taken into account too.

Detecting and correcting publication bias in meta-analysisLi, Xin 22 September 2010 (has links)
Publication bias (PB) makes the resources for meta-analysis (M-A) unreliable in the sense of completion and accuracy, so to investigate, identify and correct PB is a very important issue in M-A. The current study proposed an empirical comparison in both detection and correcting PB, using a Monte Carlo study. Conditions to be manipulated include the number of primary studies, number of missing studies and true effect size. RANNOR in SAS will be used to generate normally distributed
random variables and, for each condition, 10,000 M-As will be simulated. Type I error rates are to be calculated for the conditions with no PB and powers were estimated for the conditions with PB and adequate type I error control. Finally, a demonstration of how M-A can and should be used as a part of program evaluations
was given. / text

Kvantitativní analýza stavu znalostí o evropských ještěrkách rodu \kur{Podarcis} / A quantitative analysis of the state of knowledge of European lizards of the genus \kur{Podarcis}ŠINDELÁŘOVÁ, Monika January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents the analysis of the state of knowledge of European lizards of the genus Podarcis. It is the most numerous species of the genus Podarcis of the family Lacertidae in Europe and it belongs to the most important representative of the Mediterranean herpetofauna. The aim of this thesis was to make a quantitative analysis of publication activities, analysis of topics and assessment of context biological properties of a number of publications. The data was obtained from a literary database ?Web of Science? and ?Google Scholar?. The number of publications in each year over the period was relatively stable. The relationship of dependence between size area and number of publications for each species affected the four most dominant species and this relationship does not exist for the species with small range. More endangered species had a small number of publications. Most publications were in the field of ecology.
