"What Does the Guidebook Say?" (Changing) Historical Memory at Selected British Palaces

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: The constructing of visitor expectations and memory of historic sites is an important aspect of the heritage industry. This study examines the creation and change of dominant historical memories at four British palaces and ancestral homes. Through the close analysis of a variety of guidebooks beginning in the eighteenth century as well as other promotional materials such as websites and films, this study looks at which historical memories are emphasized for visitors and the reasons for these dominant memories. Place theorists such as Yi-Fu Tuan and Michel de Certeau as well as memory theorists such as Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora, and Eric Hobsbawm have influenced the analysis of the project's sources. This inquiry focuses on four palaces: Hampton Court Palace outside London; Edinburgh Castle in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland; Cardiff Castle in Cardiff, Wales; and Chatsworth House in Devonshire, England. The Victorians have played a large role in determining dominant memories at these sites through their interest in and focus on both the medieval period and objects in the home. Dominant memories discussed focus on the Tudors, medieval military importance, the myth and imagining of the Victorian medieval, the Regency period of Jane Austen, and elite family-home relationships. This study argues that the emphases on certain subjects allow us glimpses into the national spirit (past and present) of the peoples of Britain. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis History 2015

Creating a ’smart’ urban landscape at Shaniwarwada

Bonde, Bhavana 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the use of collective memory in the practice of landscape architecture, specifically the use of 'memory mapping' as an imaging technique. The specific site chosen is Shaniwarwada, a fortified royal complex dating from the eighteenth century, in the city of Pune, India. In order to gain an insider's perspective of the site, written questionnaires were distributed and interviews were given. The findings of these inquiries coupled with an understanding of contemporary theories concerning memory mapping guided the development of programs and physical interventions. It is hoped that these undertakings will enhance the role of Shaniwarwada as an historical site and a community place in the future. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

Hrabě František Josef Pachta v roli stavebníka i stavitele. Architektonická proměna rodových statků Františka Josefa Pachty v pozdním baroku. / Count František Josef Pachta in the role of the builder and architect. Chrástecká, Marie January 2017 (has links)
The thesis was named "Count František Josef Pachta in the role of the builder and architect. The architectonic transformation of the ancestral estates of František Josef Pachta in the late baroque period". Count František Josef Pachta was quite a notable person of Czech baroque and he held many significant political posts. Especially during the baroque period, members of Pachta family were involved in building activities at their ancestral residences, and František Josef Pachta was no exception. The thesis is primary focused on summarising Pachta's building activities and the architectural description of individual buildings such as for example mansion and church of St. Peter and Paul in Bezno, mansion Nový Falkenburg and Virgin Mary's Birth church in Jablonné v Podještědí or Pachta's townhouses in Prague. The thesis also deals with question, if count Pachta was also an "architect-dilettante", which in this case means a person, who deals with designing buildings even though he is not trained to do it. Keywords František Josef Pachta, architecture, baroque, Bezno, Jablonné v Podještědí, Pachta's townhouses in Prague

Building Blocks of Power: The Architectural Commissions and Decorative Projects of the Pucci Family in the Renaissance

D'Arista, Carla Adella January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the dates and artistic provenance of key architectural and decorative projects commissioned by the Pucci family for their townhomes, villas, and palaces during the Renaissance. It identifies the family’s insistent identification with prestigious Renaissance architects and artisans as a key element in a political and social stratagem that took its cue from the humanist ethos cultivated by their political patrons, the Medici. Temporally, this study is bracketed on both ends of the Renaissance by architectural commissions related to the Pucci’s long-standing patronage of Santissima Annunziata, the most important pilgrimage church in Florence. Methodoligically, it is an archival project that relies principally on previously unknown letters, wills, payment records, inventories, and notarial documents.

An Application Of Depth Analysis On Middle Bronze Age Palaces At Acemhoyuk, Tell Mardikh, And Kultepe

Eren, Guzin 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Many MBA buildings have been studied from different points of views and approaches / however, their spatial patterns were scarcely investigated. This thesis aims to assess the usefulness of Depth Analysis, a sub-method of Space Syntax, in the understanding of spatial patterns of MBA palaces. The palaces of key MBA sites, Acemh&ouml / y&uuml / k, Tell Mardikh and K&uuml / ltepe, were selected for the analysis. In the conclusion it is suggested that Depth Analysis can be a very useful method in understanding the configuration of spaces when there is sufficient available data. An equally successful application of this method lies in the comparative analysis of different buildings.
