As tramas do Passo Honroso: uma análise comparativa entre as narrativas do evento do Passo Honroso de Suero de Quiñones / THE PLOTS OF THE PASSO HONROSO: A comparative analysis between the narratives of the event of the Passo Honroso de Suero de Quiñones

Girardi, Lucas Werlang 12 July 2018 (has links)
This research seeks to establish the analysis of several sources produced between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, linked to an event denominated \"Passo Honroso de Suero de Quiñones\". Within this variety of sources, there is a detailed narrative of what occurred in this event, which despite variations between texts, they follow the same guideline, a plot. Thus, the question about the relationship between the selected documentary constellation, with an approximate time of production, and the same narrative, is raised, even though they may presente vairations from one another. The work will be based on an individual and comparative appreciation of these sources, investigating their physical characteristics in a technical, codicological and paleographic manner, and understanding their compositions, such as the participating scribes, their interactions among the folios, the gaps and the arrangement of contents. Relationships of approximation and distancing between the sources will be ascertained, given their proximity of production and content. The comparative analysis will be done through the collation of the transcriptions of the texts, and through systematizations in tables, will be approached the construction of the narrative of the event through the variants between the versions of the text and the particularities of each scribe when transmitting the content. Another theme to be questioned is the textual genre of the narrative of the Passo Honroso, since its plot presents diverse characteristics, covering a supposedly historiographical writing, its format and intention of legitimation, as well as its affinity with literature, aspects which should encompass discussions on the notions of history and truth for the people who lived in the period.

The undeciphered signs of Linear B

Judson, Anna Penelope January 2017 (has links)
More than sixty years after Michael Ventris’ decipherment of the Linear B script, 14 of its 87 syllabic signs still have no sound-values assigned to them. This group of ‘undeciphered’ signs represent a significant gap in our ability not only to read the Linear B script, but also to understand its development and use. Chapter 1 of this thesis analyses the origins and usage of signs with known sound-values to establish what types of values are in principle most likely to be found amongst the undeciphered signs: this investigation also enables an exploration of the development of Linear B, its relationship with its parent script Linear A, and the motivating factors underlying the creation of new Linear B signs. Chapter 2 consists of studies of each individual undeciphered sign, including a palaeographic analysis of their forms, discussion of their corpus of attestations, and an examination of their prospects of decipherment and possible sound-values in the light of the results of Chapter 1. Finally, Chapter 3 employs this group of signs in a case-study to explore the potential of palaeographic analysis to contribute to our understanding of wider issues concerning the Linear B script and its context of use within the Mycenaean palaces. This case-study focuses in particular on two main uses of palaeography: as a means of assigning a relative chronology to Linear B texts, and as evidence for the reconstruction of the Mycenaean scribes’ administrative work and training.

Correspondência oficial para o Morgado de Mateus: transcrição semidiplomática do livro n° 170 do AESP (de 1767 a 1775) / Official correspondence to the Morgado de Mateus: semi-diplomatic transcription of the book n° 170 of AESP (from 1767 to 1775)

Munhoz, Renata Ferreira 04 September 2009 (has links)
This essay presents the facsimilar copies and the semi diplomatic editions of 68 manuscripts from the second half of the eighteenth century, between the years 1767 and 1775, during the government of the General Captain of the São Paulo Captaincy, Dom Luis Antonio de Sousa Botelho Mourão. This corpus was selected in the Arquivo do Estado de São Paulo (AESP) and all of the documents are covered in the manuscript book number 170, where they follow the same order as presented here. In order to study the manuscript book, this work is composed by a chapter about Codicology and Palaeography of the studied documents, followed by the classifications of the documental species of the corpus. Before the transcriptions, there is a chapter about the historical moment in which the documents were executed. The transcription of the handwriting part of the codex is semi diplomatic, line by line and face to face with the respective facsimilar reproduction of each manuscript. There are also printed documents in the manuscript book, which were attached to this work, though they are not the object of study. Since the documents are not yet published, their divulgation can certainly contribute to the philological, linguistic and historical studies.

"The Gradual" at Oregon State University: A Rough Guide to Assessing the Identity of a Late Roman Catholic Chant Book

Puyat, Tara Elena 18 August 2015 (has links)
In the 1930s, Oregon State University received an impressive oversized manuscript, now known as "The Gradual," as part of a large donation of books. Not much was known about this manuscript. It does not have documentation attached from the time of its acquisition, nor had any methodical study been undertaken regarding the manuscript. This thesis examines the OSU Gradual, aiming to provide research tools for the identification of musical manuscripts of unknown or unclear provenance that could be useful to conservators, archivists, and librarians, irrespective of musical training. It is conceived as a "rough guide" for working situations where there is no dedicated manuscript specialist, in particular, a fulltime Latin paleographer or a chant scholar overseeing a massive collection. Instead, its "how-to" nature addresses curators and catalogers managing smaller manuscript collections as generalists, offering an interdisciplinary approach both beneficial and suitable to the aims of this study.

„Altägyptische Kursivschriften“ in a digital age

Gülden, Svenja, van der Moezel, Kyra 20 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The hieratic script has never been studied systematically regarding its peculiarities in abbreviations, orthography, functions or historical development, nor in comparison with cursive and monumental hieroglyphs as well as Demotic signs. After Möller’s Hieratic Palaeography volumes I to III, being based on merely 32 sources, Egyptologists compiled several more or less complete palaeographies on single texts, groups of texts or time spans. However, the comparability of signs is often hindered or impossible due to the heterogeneity of writing surfaces, the quality of facsimiles and photos or the choice of examples and the degree of detail. Furthermore, the word or sign context is often lacking. Since April 2015 a long-term project for a possible maximum of 23 years is located at the universities of Mainz and Darmstadt, being financed by the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. The lecture presents the aims and methods of this project and discusses the state of affairs with regard to the development and structuring 1) of a digital palaeography of the cursive scripts, including all stages of hieratic, abnormal hieratic and cursive hieroglyphic scripts from the Early Dynastic period through to Roman times, and 2) of a database with extensive metadata that allows the study of various topics among which the emergence, development, regional use, context and economy of scripts as well as the identification of individual scribes’ hands. The project shall be understood as being decisively open for any cooperation among international experts.

What remains behind - on the virtual reconstruction of dismembered manuscripts

Schulz, Matthias 20 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Coptic is the latest stage of the indigenous Egyptian language written in the Greek alphabet with some additional characters taken from the Demotic script. Due to climatic conditions many manuscripts have survived from Egypt. The bulk of Coptic manuscripts of the 1st millenium A. D. is preserved in fragmentary condition and the remains are scattered – often as single leaves or small groups of leaves – over collections on three continents. So a major aim of scholarly work is the virtual reconstruction of codices. Assigning a fragment to a specific manuscript is often not easy. It’s not only necessary to compare the script for similarities but also to take into account the contents in order to identify the manuscript of origin and the position of the leave therein. In the case of known texts which have been recorded in a manuscript as full texts a mathematical approach can be used to estimate the position of a fragment. Special problems arise with manuscripts of uncertain arrangement, e.g. liturgical codices that do not have one continuous text. They combine texts from the scriptures, hymns, prayers, or lifes of saints. In these cases reliable estimates can only be given by comparing the identified text / texts on a single leave with a representative amount of data: this means collecting and indexing as much known material as possible and arranging it according to liturgical usage. The lecture presents ways of assigning fragments by use of palaeography to known codices. An important tool is the “palaeography data base” developed in the Institut für Neutestamentliche Textforschung at Münster (INTF) as a base instrument for virtual reconstructions in the Virtual Manuscript Room (VMR) of the INTF. Furthermore, electronic tools will be shown that are a by-product of the lecturer’s PhD for identifying texts, the order of manuscripts as well as for further research.
