A comédia clássica de Sá de Miranda e o diálogo intertextual com seus paradigmas literários / Sá de Miranda\'s classical comedy and the intertextual dialogue with its literary paradigms

Silva, Martha Francisca Maldonado Baena da 27 February 2007 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to examine the method of composition of Sá de Miranda?s comedies and the way the author made use of the poetic recreation process denominated imitatio to promote the intertextual dialogue with their paradigms. It concerns to the intertextual analysis of texts produced within a specific historical and literary context in which imitating was the rule. The author who composes literary works under this rule has as his first intention to get into a poetic tradition which accepts and presupposes the alusion to preceding texts, i. e., an autonomous poetic tradition in which the intertextual relations take place in a conscious and technical manner and the work of imitation results of the creative re-elaboration of the patterns. The first chapter comes to situate Sá de Miranda?s comic work in the historical and cultural context in which it was generated. The second chapter deals with imitatio and intertextuality, establishing terminology and methodology for intertextual analysis of specifically literary works which have the intentional appropriation of texts as literary creation principle. The third chapter presents a brief history of the Roman theater, from its origins up to the arising of the fabula palliata, the Roman adaptation of the Greek New Comedy, which was the model of comedy imitated by the Italian poets of the Renaissance, whose works became paradigms to the Portuguese poet too. The last chapter is dedicated to the intertextual analysis of Sá de Miranda?s Comedy.

Sexual Selection in Mantled Howling Monkeys (Alouatta palliata), With an Emphasis on the Role of Female Mate Choice

Ford, Randall Thomas January 2010 (has links)

Despite early neglect, recent studies of sexual selection have shown a renewed interest in female reproductive strategies. Clearly the traditional portrayal of female animals as passive participants in mating is incorrect, but much is still unknown about female reproductive strategies, including the extent of female mate choice. The primary goal of this dissertation was to explore the role of female mate choice in mantled howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata), a species in which males have previously been assumed to control mating.

From March 2006 through February 2007, I used continuous focal-animal sampling to record the behavior of adult female mantled howlers at Hacienda La Pacifica, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The focal animals in the study were nine adult females in a social group that has been regularly monitored since 1984. There were also three capture sessions performed by K. Glander to collect blood samples for genetic paternity analysis. A total of 29 individuals in the study group and eight adult males from surrounding groups were captured.

The genetic paternity analyses were largely inconclusive. Of the eight microsatellite markers used previously in this species, only four were polymorphic in this sample. Additionally, nearly half (7 of 16) of the purported mothers were excluded at one locus. Assuming the mother was unknown allowed determination of genetic paternity in only one case. In terms of behavior, females were largely responsible for soliciting copulations, but female mate choice did not appear to be a major factor. Females almost never rejected copulations (3.3% of copulation attempts) and mated with multiple males in 77.8% of female cycles.

The lack of conclusive genetic paternity data leaves open the possibility of post-copulatory female choice. However, explanations exist for the apparent lack of female mate choice in this species. Because males must attain alpha status to remain in a group, differences in inherent quality may be low among group males. The potential for small differences among males in a social group, combined with the fact that females disperse from their natal group, suggests that female mate choice may occur primarily in choosing a group during dispersal.
/ Dissertation

La question de l'axiologie / Dramaturgy and Morals in Menander’s and Plautus’ comedies. The question of axiology

Lhostis, Nathalie 29 November 2013 (has links)
This study, entitled “dramaturgy and morals”, looks at the dramatization of moral values in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. I employ an approach that identifies which values are evoked and looks at how they are conveyed and structured in relation to one another. The aim is to analyse how they are treated and the place that is accorded to them. Are they subjected to reflection, affirmed, or critiqued? Thus what is at stake is less about finding the “morals” in the plays or their supposed moral message, but rather delineating the architectonics of values in these comedies. This study will focus more specifically on axiology, that is to say the form that moral evaluation takes in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. According to which criteria is this evaluation carried out? What is at stake in this evaluation? The concept of value, as it appears in the comedies of Menander and Plautus, entails essentially three domains: the material, the symbolic, and the ethical. The issue at hand is understanding how they are conceived of and related to one another in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. Such a perspective intersects with the question of the relationship between personal interest and the interests of others, a key concern in Ancient philosophy which seeks to discover to what extent an ethical agent is obliged to take into consideration others in order to achieve happiness. The first section is concerned with the concepts of moral values and trade. It looks at two types of trade: commercial trade, which outlines the primacy of utilitarian morals, and communal trade, which is based on co-operative values. The second section deals with the idea of contravention. It examines the procedures used to judge a particular action. The third section looks at comedy as ethical experimentation.
