Study of lignin redeposition onto pulp fibres during brown stock washing operations / Studie av ligninåterdeponering på pappersmassafibrer under brunmassatvättning

Med den ökande trenden av process slutning inom massabruken, så har det indikerats att återvinningen av tvättvätska från de olika tvättsteg troligen resulterar i negativa effekter. Närvaron av olika komponenter kan påverka upplösningen av lignin genom att främja dess återdeponering på massan, och därmed påverka senare steg inom bruket. Denna studie fokuserade på effekten av tvättvätskes sammansättningen, pH och magnesiumjoners innehållet på ligninåterfästningen till fibrerna under brunmassatvätt. Projektets syfte var att finna nya relevanta insikter för dagens verksamheter. För den experimentella proceduren blandades massa- och vätskaprover erhållna från ett barrveds-sulfatmassabruk, relevanta lösningsmodifikationer genomfördes, och dessa placerades i ett vattenbad vid 90 °C. Därefter tvättades och separerades den resulterande blandningen. Kappatal och ISO-ljusstyrka användes för massakaraktärisering, samt UV-VISspektroskopi för tvättvätskor. En ytterligare procedur med alkalisk urlakning utfördes på massan för att identifiera den relativt svaga liginbindningen. Resultaten indikerade att högre ligninhalt och konduktivitet, lägre pH och högre MgSO4 koncentration i tvättvätskor ökar lignininnehållet i massan. Under proceduren identifierades en möjlig konkurrens mellan borttagningen av lignin från fibrerna och återfällningen. Genom att uföra studier på olika bruksvätskor, så påverkades flera variabler systemet samtidigt, vilket förhindrade identifikationen av den dominerande variabeln som potentiellt kunde justeras för att minska återdeponeringen. Det observerades dock att en tillsatts av NaOH i tvättvätskor kunde reducera lignininnehållet i massan, medans däremot en ökning av MgSO4 kunde ha negativa effekter. / With the growing tendency of process closure within pulp mills, recycling liquors into different washing stages was observed to result in likely negative effects. The presence of different components may affect lignin dissolution, by promoting its redeposition onto pulp therefore affecting later stages in the mill. The present study focused on the effect of washing liquor composition, pH, and magnesium ions content on lignin reattachment to fibres during brown stock washing. This project’s motivation was to provide new insights relevant for today’s operations. For the experimental procedure, pulp and liquor samples obtained from a softwood kraft pulp mill were mixed, relevant solution modifications were performed, and these were set inside a water bath at 90 °C. Then, the resulting mixture was washed and separated. Kappa number and ISO brightness were employed for pulp characterization, and UV-VIS spectroscopy for washing liquors. An additional procedure of alkaline leaching was performed on pulp to identify relatively weak lignin attachment. Obtained results indicated that higher lignin content and conductivity, lower pH and higher MgSO4 concentration in washing liquors increase the lignin content in pulp. A competition between lignin removal from fibres and reattachment was identified to be possibly occurring during the procedure. By performing studies on different mill liquors, multiple variables affected the system simultaneously, which hinders the identification of the dominant variable to be potentially adjusted for reducing the redeposition. However, it was seen that adding NaOH in washing liquors could reduce lignin content in the pulp, whereas an increase in MgSO4 could present negative effects.

Enhancement of Phenol Formaldehyde Adhesive with Crystalline Nano Cellulose

Abstract The wood industries to this day use almost exclusively petroleum derived adhesives that are based mainly on the reaction of formaldehyde with urea, melamine or phenol. These adhesives have low cost and good adjustable properties which makes it hard for bio-based alternatives to compete. Phenol formaldehyde (PF), as an example of a synthetic adhesive, has been in use for over 100 years. In some parts of the world, legislation around formaldehyde is changing, and there is an increasingly voluntary awareness about the toxicity and unsustainability of formaldehyde. Industries realize that raw materials from oil is unstainable. The latter is currently a driving factor behind research on alternatives to amino based adhesives. Also, consumer interest in healthy and sustainable products, such as emitting less formaldehyde indoors, increases the need for bio based adhesives. Cellulose contained in plant cell walls is a renewable, abundant and nontoxic resource. During the last decades, many innovations have been achieved around cellulose and this trend does not seem to be slowing down. Cellulose shows excellent mechanical properties, high strength, high elastic modulus as well as having a low density. Research about cellulose reinforced adhesives has been increased the last years. This thesis studied the enhancement of phenol formaldehyde adhesive with Crystalline Nano Cellulose (CNC) at 5wt% and 10wt% loading levels for producing plywood boards. Indecisive results when using CNC higher than 3wt%, especially with PF resin, have been reported by other authors. In this thesis, European standards were applied. EN 314 was applied to test the panels shear strength. Three (3) treatment classes were selected, indoor room condition as well as pre-treatments 5.1.1 and 5.1.3. Other properties measured were modulus of elasticity, thickness swelling, formaldehyde emissions. Results showed a shear strength increase for all pre-treatment classes. 10wt% CNC mixture with phenol formaldehyde in water bath, pre-treatment (5.1.1) for 24h showed the highest increase in shear strength (+73,9%). The 10 wt% CNC mixture panels also showed the highest wood fibre failure of all panel types produced. A decrease in MOE has been observed with 10 wt% CNC compared to the 5 wt% CNC panels. Formaldehyde emissions tests were inconclusive, but since less PF was used, there was a general reduction in emissions. The 5 wt% CNC panels were superior in terms of modulus of elasticity and swelling and also showed improved shear strength.

The combination of large areas of forests, modern and efficient plants, good capacity for movement of raw materials and the production and relentless pursuit of low operating costs are almost always divergent factors. Fit management teams to conduct detailed each process relating them to the specific characteristics of the regions in which they operate, thus defining the best ways to deal with obstacles studies. Accordingly, this study was undertaken, in order to identify concepts aimed at maintenance efficiency in modern industry, always directed to the new reality of the sector, which is the deployment of high capacity, far from large industrial centers factories. Additionally were raised core services applicable to this type of industry and examined the relationship of efficiency with this new reality. Finally we tried to study various processes considered relevant for new pulp and relate factors focused on maintenance of equipment and facilities, such that focal points can be identified with possible action taken facing the pursuit of efficiency. The analysis of these factors was taken by professionals with experience in manufacturing pulp, beyond the requirements of the search for literature review and empirical evidence for processing of proposals relations. The study confirmed the need for an efficient structure maintenance in factories and allowed us to identify the degree of importance of maintenance planning in maintenance efficiency in pulp mills. / A busca da competitividade no atual cenário das indústrias de celulose é um grande desafio para as empresas do setor. Associar a eficiência nos processos de implantação de florestas, silvicultura, colheita, logística de madeira, produção de celulose e logística de celulose resulta em uma matriz complexa no caso de indústrias com alta capacidade de produção. A combinação de grandes áreas de florestas, fábricas modernas e eficientes, boa capacidade para movimentação de matéria prima e da produção e a busca incansável pelo baixo custo operacional são fatores quase sempre divergentes. Cabe às equipes de gestão a realização de estudos detalhados de cada processo relacionando-os com as características específicas das regiões em que atuam, definindo, assim as melhores formas de tratar os obstáculos encontrados. Nesse sentido, foi conduzido este estudo, com objetivo de identificar conceitos voltados à eficiência da manutenção na indústria moderna, sempre direcionados à nova realidade do setor, que é a implantação de fábricas de alta capacidade, longe dos grandes centros industriais. Associado a isto foram levantados os principais serviços aplicáveis a este tipo de indústria e verificada a relação de eficiência com esta nova realidade. Por fim procurou-se estudar diversos processos considerados relevantes para nova indústria de celulose e relacionar fatores voltados à manutenção dos equipamentos e instalações, de tal forma que possam ser identificados pontos focais com possíveis tomadas de ação voltadas a busca de eficiência. A análise destes fatores foi feita por profissionais com experiência no setor industrial de celulose, além da busca por requisitos da revisão de literatura e de evidências empíricas para tratamento das relações propostas. O estudo confirmou a necessidade de uma estrutura eficiente de manutenção nas fábricas e permitiu identificar o grau de importância do planejamento da manutenção na eficiência da manutenção nas fábricas de celulose.

La bioconversion des biomasses lignocellulosiques est actuellement un grand défi pour le développement de technologies de bio-raffinage. Le manque de connaissances des mécanismes de liquéfaction et de saccharification est l’un des principaux facteurs qui pénalisent le développement des procédés de bio-raffinage. Ce travail est centré sur le développement d’analyses physiques et biochimiques in-situ (viscosimétrie, focus beam reflectance measurement) et ex-situ (rhéometrie, granulométrie laser, morphogranulométrie, sédimentation…) pour améliorer la compréhension des mécanismes de déstructuration desfibres lignocellulosiques et caractériser les cinétiques de libération de carbone fermentescible. Des substrats modèles (cellulose microcristalline, papier Whatman) et industriels (pâte à papier, bagasse de canne à sucre) ont été utilisés avec différentes conditions d'hydrolyse (1% à 30%w/v, 0.1 à 0.5mL enzyme/ g cellulose). Les résultats obtenus ont permis:- de proposer et de valider les mesures in-situ de la viscosité de la suspension et de la distribution des longueurs de corde des particules, ainsi que sa conversion en distribution de diamètre.- de montrer l'impact de la nature et de la concentration de substrat et des ratios enzyme/substrat sur les évolutions des paramètres physico-biochimiques lors de l'hydrolyse. Ces effets ont été quantifiés sur les limitations de transfert.- d'établir un modèle phénoménologique de comportement rhéologique des suspensions initiales- de montrer que les cinétiques physico et bio-chimiques sont des cinétiques du second ordre- de montrer que, pour des hydrolyses à haute teneur en matière sèche, on peut réduire considérablement la limitation des transferts liée aux hautes concentrations et contrôler la cinétique de production de glucose par une stratégie d’ajouts cumulés desubstrat. / In the context of biofuels and chemicals production of petroleum substitutes from renewable carbon, bioconversion of lignocellulose biomasses is currently a major challenge. The limited knowledge of liquefaction and saccharification mechanisms stands as the main factor which penalizes bio-refinery progress. The present work is centred on the development of in-situ(viscosimetry, focus beam reflectance measurement) and ex-situ (rheometry, diffraction light scattered, morphometry, decantation…) physical and biochemical analysis to expand our understanding of the destructuration mechanisms of lignocellulose fibres and to characterise the release kinetics of fermentable cellulosic carbon. Model (microcrystalline cellulose,Whatman paper) and industrial (paper-pulp, sugarcane bagasse) lignocellulose matrices under a large range of hydrolysis conditions (1% up to 30%w/v and 0.1 up to 0.5mL enzyme/g cellulose) were studied during 24h hydrolysis experiments (pertinent period to appreciate transfer limitations). Our scientific results allow:- to propose and validate the in-situ measurements of the suspension viscosity and chord length distribution together with its conversion into particle size distribution.- to demonstrate the impact of the substrate nature and concentration and of the enzymatic ratios on the evolution of physical- and biochemical parameters during hydrolysis. Their impacts on transfer phenomena were quantified.- to establish phenomenological models for rheological behaviour of initial suspensions.- to describe all physical (viscosity, particle size) and biochemical (substrate and product) kinetics by second order reaction models.- to demonstrate that, for high dry matter concentration hydrolysis, a cumulative feeding substrate strategy allows considerably reducing the transfer limitations linked to high concentrations and to control the glucose production kinetics.

Microfibrillated cellulose : Energy-efficient preparation techniques and key properties

This work describes three alternative processes for producing microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in which pulp fibres are first pre-treated and then homogenized using a high-pressure homogenizer. In one process, fibre cell wall delamination was facilitated with a combined enzymatic and mechanical pre-treatment. In the two other processes, cell wall delamination was facilitated by pre-treatments that introduced anionically charged groups into the fibre wall, by means of either a carboxymethylation reaction or irreversibly attaching carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto the fibres. All three processes are industrially feasible and enable production with low energy consumption. Using these methods, MFC can be produced with an energy consumption of 500–2300 kWh/tonne, which corresponds to a 91–98% reduction in energy consumption from that presented in earlier studies. These materials have been characterized in various ways and it has been demonstrated that the produced MFCs are approximately 5–30 nm wide and up to several microns long. / <p>QC 20120928</p>

PH-MÄTNING I PAPPERSPRODUKTION : En studie i optimeringar av elektriska mätsystem / PH MEASURING IN PAPER PRODUCTION : A study in optimization for electrical measuring systems

Den fundamentala principen för tillverkning av papper är inte en särskilt komplicerad sådan. Men för att pappret skall erhålla specifika egenskaper blir processen alltmer komplicerad. Bland annat tillsätts olika typer av kemikalier och processen övervakas ständigt av olika system. Ett av dessa system mäter pH-halten i pappersmassan. Mätsystemet är dock utsatt för frekventa mätfel vilket medför en felaktig dosering av den koldioxid som används för att sänka pH-värdet. Detta kan slutligen ha negativ påverkan på papprets egenskaper. Syftet bakom arbetet är att mätsystemet ska bidra till en jämn reglering av pH och därigenom garantera jämn papperskvalitet. För detta arbete har en frågeställning och ett antal mål och delmål etablerats. De övergripande målen omfattar att etablera en statistisk modell över mätfel och beräkna eventuella ekonomiska besparingar. För att uppfylla mål och besvara frågeställningen måste en grunduppfattning byggas uppför berörda delar av tillverkningsprocessen, pH-värdets påverkan i processen, pH-sensorns mätprincip, mätsystemets utformning och rutiner som berör mätsystemet. Med denna grund undersöks uppkomsten av mätfel för de sex mätpunkterna. Detta utförs med två tillvägagångssätt: Sammanställning av lagrade historiska data och sammanställningar avprovtagningar utförda under kontrollerade förhållanden. De aspekter som undersöks är magnitud, frekvens och hur dessa förhåller sig till olika processrelaterade värden. En kalkyl för kostnader berörande mätsystemet upprättas även. Denna omfattar aktuella kostnader för koldioxid och underhåll. I resultatet presenteras en statistisk modell över mätfel, uppdelat på historiska och i närtid. Den historiska modellen visar, för samtliga behandlade positioner, en medelavvikelse på &lt;0,3 pH-enheter. Den min- och maximala avvikelsen kan däremot uppgå till &gt;0,8 pH-enheter. Modellen för närtid visar på kraftiga avvikelser för fyra av de sex behandlade systempositionerna, som relaterar både till papperskvalitet och ytvikt. Denna statistiska modell används sedan för att beräkna möjliga besparingar. Här påvisades att viss besparing fanns, både för koldioxid och för underhållskostnader. Slutsatsen för detta arbete är att ett mätfel existerar för majoriteten av de behandlade positionerna. Det har även kunnat påvisas ett samband med de undersökta processrelaterade aspekterna, men resultatet kan inte garanteras fullständigt. Med detta kunde även en möjlig besparing av koldioxid uppskattas vid bättre mätnoggrannhet. Besparingen uppgick till c:a 200 tkr, vilket i jämförelse med företagets omsättning endast utgör 0,075‰ av denna. / The fundamental principle for manufacturing paper is not a complicated one. However, for the paper to acquire specific properties, the process becomes increasingly complicated.Among other things, different chemicals are added, and the process is continuouslymonitored by various systems. One of these systems measures the pH-level of the pulp. This system is however constantly affected by measuring errors, which in turn leads to the incorrect dosage of the carbon dioxide used to lower the pH-level. This could in turn have a negative impact on the properties of the final paper. The underlaying purpose of this project is for the measuring system to ensure an even regulation of pH and therethrough guarantee an even paper quality. For this project, several question at issue, goals and subgoals have been established. The general goals cover establishing a statistical model for the error and estimate possible economical savings. To fulfil the goals and answer the questions at issue, firstly a basic understanding must be established for: concerned parts of the manufacturing process, the effect pH-level has on the process, the measuring principle of the pH-sensor, the design of the measuring systemand the routines concerning the measuring system. With this basis, the occurrence of measuring error is examined for the six measuring points. This is accomplished with two methods: The compilation of historical data and the compilation of manual measurementsexecuted under controlled conditions. The aspects examined are magnitude, frequency and the relation to process related values. Finally, a calculation for costs regarding the measuring system was established. This includes current carbon dioxide and maintenance costs. The result presents a statistical model for the measuring error, divided into historical and near time. The historical model shows that for all the addressed positions, a mean deviation occurred &lt;0.3 pH-units. However, the minimum and maximum deviation could reach &gt;0.8 pH-units. The model for near time shows significant deviations for four out of the six covered positions, which in turn shows relations to both paper quality and surface weight. With this statistical model possible savings were calculated. This in turn showed the possibility of savings for both carbon dioxide and maintenance. The conclusion for this project is the existence of a measuring error. Also, a connection between this and the process related aspects could be established. Although, the result cannot be completely guarantied. With this, possible savings through better accuracy could be estimated. Though, these were only in the size of 0.075‰ of the company’s total revenue.

Bonding Ability Distribution of Fibers in Mechanical Pulp Furnishes

This thesis presents a method of measuring the distribution of fiber bonding ability in mechanical pulp furnishes. The method is intended for industrial use, where today only average values are used to describe fiber bonding ability, despite the differences in morphology of the fibers entering the mill. Fiber bonding ability in this paper refers to the mechanical fiber’s flexibility and ability to form large contact areas to other fibers, characteristics required for good paper surfaces and strength. Five mechanical pulps (Pulps A-E), all produced in different processes from Norway spruce (Picea Abies) were fractionated in hydrocyclones with respect to the fiber bonding ability. Five streams were formed from the hydrocyclone fractionation, Streams 1-5. Each stream plus the feed (Stream 0) was fractionated according to fiber length in a Bauer McNett classifier to compare the fibers at equal fiber lengths (Bauer McNett screens 16, 30, 50, and 100 mesh were used). Stream 1 was found to have the highest fiber bonding ability, evaluated as tensile strength and apparent density of long fiber laboratory sheets. External fibrillation and collapse resistance index measured in FiberLabTM, an optical measurement device, also showed this result. Stream 5 was found to have the lowest fiber bonding ability, with a consecutively falling scale between Stream 1 and Stream 5. The results from acoustic emission measurements and cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy analysis concluded the same pattern. The amount of fibers in each hydrocyclone stream was also regarded as a measure of the fibers’ bonding ability in each pulp. The equation for predicted Bonding Indicator (BIN) was calculated by combining, through linear regression, the collapse resistance index and external fibrillation of the P16/R30 fractions for Pulps A and B. Predicted Bonding Indicator was found to correlate well with measured tensile strength. The BIN-equation was then applied also to the data for Pulps C-E, P16/R30, and Pulp A-E, P30/R50, and predicted Bonding Indicator showed good correlations with tensile strength also for these fibers. From the fiber raw data measured by the FiberLabTM instrument, the BIN-equation was used for each individual fiber. This made it possible to calculate a BIN-distribution of the fibers, that is, a distribution of fiber bonding ability. The thesis also shows how the BIN-distributions of fibers can be derived from FiberLabTM measurements of the entire pulp without mechanically separating the fibers by length first, for example in a Bauer McNett classifier. This is of great importance, as the method is intended for industrial use, and possibly as an online-method. Hopefully, the BIN-method will become a useful tool for process evaluations and optimizations in the future. / Den här studien presenterar en metod för att mäta fördelning av fiberbindning i mekaniska massor. Metoden hoppas kunna användas industriellt, där i dagsläget enbart medelvärden används för att mäta fiberbindnings-fördelning, trots råvarans (fibrernas) morfologiska skillnader.  Fem mekaniska massor (Massa A-E) från olika massaprocesser men från samma råvara, norsk gran (Picea Abies), har fraktionerats i hydrocykloner med avseende på fiberbindningsförmåga. Från hydrocyklon-fraktioneringen bildades fem strömmar, Ström 1-5. Varje ström plus injektet (Ström 0) fraktionerades också med avseende på fiberlängd i en Bauer McNett för att kunna jämföra fibrerna vid samma fiberlängd (Bauer McNett silplåtarna 16, 30, 50 och 100 mesh användes). Fiberbindingsförmåga i den här studien härrör till fiberns flexibilitet och förmåga att skapa stora kontaktytor med andra fibrer, vilket bidrar till papprets yt- och styrkeegenskaper. Ström 1 visade sig ha den högsta fiberbindningsförmågan, utvärderat som dragstyrka och densitet av långfiberark, samt yttre fibrillering och kollaps resistans index mätt i den optiska analysatorn FiberLabTM. Akustisk emission och tvärsnittsanalyser visade samma resultat. Ström 5 visade sig ha den lägsta fiberbindningsförmågan, med en avtagande skala från Ström 1 till Ström 5. Andelen fibrer från injektet som gick ut med varje hydrocyklon-ström ansågs också vara ett mått på fibrernas bindningsförmåga i varje massa. Genom att kombinera fiberegenskaperna kollaps resistans och yttre fibrillering från den optiska mätningen på varje fiber genom linjär regression, kunde Bindnings Indikator (BIN) predikteras. Medelvärdet av Bindnings Indikator för varje hydrocyklon-ström korrelerar med dragstyrka för långfiber-labark.  Det visade sig att predikterad Bindnings Indikator inte bara fungerade för Massa A och Massa B P16/R30 fraktionen, som var de fraktioner som användes i den linjära regressionen, utan även för Massa C-E, P16/R30, och Massa A-E P30/R50 som också visade goda korrelationer med långfiber-dragstyrka när de sattes in i BIN-formeln. BIN-formeln användes sedan för varje enskild fiber, i den rådata som levererats från FiberLabTM. Detta gjorde det möjligt att få en BIN-distribution av fibrerna, d.v.s. en fördelning av fiberbindningsförmåga. Den här rapporten visar också hur det går att få BIN-distributioner också från mätningar på hela massan, för valbara fiberlängder, utan att först mekaniskt separera massan efter fiberlängd. Det är viktigt, då metoden är tänkt att användas som en industriell metod, och eventuellt som en online-metod. Att minska plastavfall och uppmuntra återvinning har fått hög prioritet i många affärsverksamheter och olika typer av regleringar implementeras för att minska den negativa påverkan av plastanvändningen. Papper och kartong består i huvudsak av cellulosa som har många egenskaper som är essentiella för en hållbar ekonomi (t.ex. förnyelsebar, återvinningsbar och bionedbrytbar) och pappersprodukter kan ersätta plast i många applikationer. Återvinningsgraden för pappersförpackningar är i vissa områden redan hög men det finns fortfarande begränsningar i att använda återvunna fibrer i vissa applikationer. Återvunna fibrer kan innehålla mineraloljor som kan migrera och ansamlas i mat som lagras i förpackningarna. Utvecklingen av barriärer för papper och kartong är nödvändig för att öka graden av användningsområden för förpackningar. Laminering är en traditionell teknik som används för bestrykningar, dock kan metoden leda till lägre återvinningsgrad.  Dispersionsbarriärer är en typ av barriär där en emulsionspolymer stelnar till en icke porös film på pappersytan. Dispersionsbarriärer är enkla att separera från pappret under återvinningsprocesser och bra barriäregenskaper kan uppnås redan för låga ytvikter.  I denna masteruppsats testas tre olika pigment (kaolin, talk och kalciumkarbonat) i olika koncentrationer i styrenakrylat latex och effekten på barriäregenskaper utvärderas. Dispersionerna beströks på papper med hjälp av bänkbestrykning. Viskositeten mättes med en reometer och pigmenten tenderade att sänka viskositeten under lägre skjuvhastigheter. Mineraloljebarriäregenskaper testades genom att mäta migrationen av ett flyktigt kolväte (n-heptan) genom barriären. Oljeresistens testades med palmkärnoljemetoden och ingen oljemigration observerades efter 24 timmar. Vikt oljeresistens testades också för alla prover. Kaolin tenderade att ge sämre fettbarriär efter viktning, jämfört med talk. Detta förklarades genom att kaolin har en högre modul än talk vilket kan skapa sprickbildning i barriären under vikning. Vatten och vattenångbarriär testades med Cobb och WVTR. Testen visade bättre barriäregenskaper för tillsatt kaolin, liknande eller sämre för talk, och sämre för kalciumkarbonat. Försämringen av egenskaper förklarades genom sprickbildning orsakad i toppbestrykningen för de prover som innehöll kalciumkarbonat. Kaolin gav generellt sett mer stabila förbättringar i barriäregenskaper, vilket förklarades av de bättre dispergerade och mindre partiklarna jämfört med talk, samt den höga formfaktorn. Delaminering av barriären från pappret förekom i alla prover, utom för talk i högre koncentrationer. Svepelektronmikroskop användes för att studera ytråhet, pinholes, vätning, barriärens tjocklek och struktur, pigmentens form och orientering samt sprickbildning efter vikning.  Resultaten visade på en barriär med få eller inga pinholes. Diskformade pigment tenderade att orientera sig parallellt med papperets yta. Ingen direkt skada på barriären eller sprickbildning kunde observeras i vecken efter vikning. FTIR användes för att studera interaktioner i gränsytan mellan matris och filler. Det fanns ingen indikation för nya kemiska bindningar i något av proverna. Återvinningstest utfördes också vilka visade att barriären enkelt kan separeras från pappret och en hög grad fibrer kan utvinnas under återvinning. / Reducing plastic littering and encouraging recycling have become top priorities for many businesses, and regulatory actions are taken around the world to target the adverse effects of plastic materials. Paper and paperboards mainly consist of cellulose which has many properties that are essential for a sustainable economy (e.g., renewable, recyclable and biodegradable), and paper products can be an alternative for plastics in many applications. Although the recycling rate for paper and cardboard in some areas is already relatively high, there are still some concerns about using recirculated fibres in some applications. Recycled cardboard can contain mineral oil hydrocarbons which could migrate and accumulate in food during storage.  Developing coatings for paperboards is necessary to increase the range of usage for paper products in packaging applications. A traditional way of coating paper is by lamination, but this technique tends to lead to lower recycling rates. Dispersion coating is a type of barrier where an emulsion polymer is applied and solidified to a non-porous protective film on the paper surface.  Dispersion coatings are readily removed from the paper during recycling, and proper barrier functions can be achieved already at low coat weights.  In this thesis, three different types of pigments (kaolin, talc, and calcium carbonate) were tested in different concentrations in a styrene acrylate copolymer latex, and the effect on barrier properties was evaluated. The dispersions were coated onto papers by rod coating. Viscosity tests were done by using a rheometer. The pigments tended to decrease viscosity at low shear rates. Mineral oil barrier properties were tested by measuring the migration of a volatile hydrocarbon (n-heptane) through the barrier. Grease resistance was tested with the palm kernel oil test, and no oil migration was observed in any of the samples after 24h. The effect of folding on barrier properties depending on the pigment type and concentration was also evaluated as a part of testing grease resistance. Reduced barrier performance was seen after folding for kaolin compared to talc which was explained by the higher modulus of kaolin which may cause crack formation in the coating. Water and water vapour barrier properties were tested through the Cobb test, and by a Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR) analyser. The results showed an increased barrier performance with kaolin in higher concentrations and a reduction with calcium carbonate. This behaviour was explained by crackelations in the top-coating layers for the samples containing calcium carbonate. Kaolin seemed to give a more stable improvement of barrier performance, and this was explained by a better dispersion of smaller particles with a high aspect ratio. Adhesive strength and delamination were measured by heat seal tests. Delamination of the barrier was seen in all samples except for talc in higher concentrations. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to evaluate surface roughness, voids, wetting of particles, barrier thickness and integrity, pigment shape and orientation, and crack formation after folding.  The results showed a barrier with good integrity and few voids, and platy particles tended to orient parallel to the paper surface. No clear visual damage was observed after folding, and no crack formation could be seen at the creases. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy – Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR–ATR) was used to study matrix/filler interactions, and bond formation during consolidation. No indication of additional bond formation was seen in any of the samples. Recyclability tests were also performed which showed that the coatings are readily removable, and a large fibre fraction is available during the recycling of the fibres.

The Use of Lignin Derivatives to Improve Selected Paper Properties

Ved består huvudsakligen av tre typer av polymerer, cellulosa, hemicellulosa och lignin. Lignin bildas i naturen genom enzymatiskt initierad oxidativ koppling av tre olika typer av fenylpropan-enheter. Dessa bygger genom olika kol-kol- och kol-syre-bindningar upp en amorf tredimensionell polymer. När kemisk massa tillverkas bryts lignin ner och löses ut i kokluten. Luten innehåller de förbrukade kokkemikalierna och bränns generellt i en sodapanna för att regenerera kemikalierna och producera ånga. Sodapannan är emellertid dyr. Därför har den blivit produktionsbegränsande på många massabruk. Att avlägsna en del av ligninet från avluten vore därför önskvärt och att finna ekonomiskt intressanta produkter baserade på lignin från svartlut är därför ett viktigt forskningsområde . Ett lämpligt område för ligninprodukter vore som tillsatts i oblekt massa. Oblekt massa används till stor del för tillverkning av kraftliner, topp- och bottenskikten på wellpapp. När lådor av wellpapp lagras i containrar som färdas över haven, förändras den relativa luftfuktigheten. Detta gör att lådorna kollapsar lättare än om de skulle ha lagrats vid konstant luftfuktighet, även en hög sådan. Detta är på grund av det så kallade mekanosorptiva- eller accelererade krypfenomenet. Genom tillsatts av våtstyrkemedel till kraftliner eller behandla den med hydrofoba ämnen, finns indikatoner på att mekanosorptiva effekten skulle kunna minska. För att försöka minska den effekten har ett lågmolekylärt kraftlignin, som utvunnits med hjälp av tvärsflödesfiltrering av svartlut och svavelsyrafällning, använts. Genom derivatisering av detta lignin med linolja erhölls ett hydrofobt ligninderivat som uppvisar strukturella likheter med biopolymeren suberin. När detta suberinlika ligninderivat tillsätts till massa verkar det mekanosorptiva krypet minska. När lågmolekylärt lignin används tillsammans med ligninradikalinitiatorerna lackas eller mangan(III) i kraftlinermassa erhålls dessutom en våtstyrka på ca 5% av torrstyrkan. Efter aminering av detta lignin gav en tillsatts till kraftlinermassan en våtstyrka på upp till 10% av torrstyrkan. Det finns indikationer på att det mekanosorptiva krypet samtidigt minskar när dessa behandlingar görs som ger upphov till ökad våtstyrka. / Wood consists mainly of three types of polymers; cellulose, hemi cellulose and lignin. Lignin is formed in nature through enzymatic initiated oxidative coupling of three different kinds of phenyl propane units. These form by various carbon-carbon and carbon-oxygen bonds, an amorphous three-dimensional polymer. As chemical pulp is produced, lignin is degraded and dissolved into pulping liquors. These liquors contain the spent cooking chemicals and are generally burnt in a recovery boiler to regenerate cooking chemicals and produce steam. However, the recovery boiler is expensive. Hence, it has become the bottleneck for production in many pulp mills. Removal of some lignin from the spent cooking liquor would, for that reason, be desired and valuable products based on lignin from cooking liquors are searched for. One suitable area for lignin products would be as additive in unbleached pulp. A major product from unbleached pulp is kraftliner, the top and bottom layers of corrugated board. When boxes of corrugated board are stored in containers travelling overseas the relative humidity is varying. This makes the boxes collapse more easily than if they were stored at constant humidity, even a high one. This is due to the so called mechano-sorptive or accelerated creep phenomenon. By addition of wet strength additive to kraftliner or treating it with hydrophobic compounds there are indications on that the mechano-sorptive effect would decrease. Trying to decrease this effect, low molecular weight kraft lignin has been used. It was obtained by cross-flow filtration of black liquor and precipitation by sulphuric acid. By derivatisation of this lignin by linseed oil, a hydrophobic lignin derivative was obtained, similar in structure to units in the biopolymer suberin. As this suberin-like lignin-derivative was added to pulp the mechano-sorptive creep seemed to be lowered. Furthermore, when the low molecular weight lignin was used together with the lignin radical initiators laccase or manganese(III) in kraftliner pulp, a wet strength of about 5% of dry strength was obtained. An amination treatment of this lignin and addition to kraftliner pulp resulted in a wet strength of up to 10% of dry strength. There are indications of that the mechano-sorptive creep also decreases as these treatments, resulting in increased wet strength, are made. / QC 20101103

En ”lätt-att-rengöra” yta definieras som en yta som stöter bort vatten och smuts. I detta projekt har klarlack med olika sammansättningar studerats i syfte att introducera egenskapen ”lätt-att-rengöra”. För att uppnå denna egenskap måste beläggningen vara superhydrofob och oleofob. Detta innebär att kontaktvinklarna för både vatten (WCA) och dijodmetan (DMCA) måste vara över 150°. En hybrid sol-gel-metod valdes för detta projekt på grund av dess många fördelar som kontroll av ytmorfologi, enkel inkorporering av nanopartiklar och organiska komponenter i nätverket samt förmåga att bilda ett antal kompositioner. Hybrid sol-gelfilmerna, som innehåller både organiska och oorganiska komponenter, ger mekanisk beständighet, flexibilitet och förmåga att härda vid låga temperaturer. De organiska komponenterna fyller porerna i den oorganiska oxidkedjan, vilket gör att det hybridorganiskt-oorganiska materialet når slutlig densitet vid lägre temperatur. Både hydrofoba och hydrofila kiselnanopartiklar studerades för att undersöka vilken av dem som bäst inkorporeras i filmen. Den högsta uppnådda hydrofobiciteten och oleofobiciteten var av ett prov med 133° WCA och 152° DMCA. Provet bestod av en organisk och oorganisk komponent såväl som hydrofoba kiselnanopartiklar. / An easy-to-clean surface is defined as a surface that repels water and dirt. In this project, clearcoats with different composition have been studied in the process of introducing easy-to-clean properties in the coating. To achieve these properties the coating needs to be both superhydrophobic and oleophobic. This means that the contact angles against both water (WCA) and diiodomethane contact angle (DMCA) should be above 150 °. A hybrid sol-gel approach was chosen for this project due to the several advantages it provides such as, control of surface morphology, easy incorporation of nanoparticles and organic components into the network and ability to form a range of compositions. The hybrid sol-gel films, which contain both organic and inorganic components, provide mechanical resistance, flexibility, and ability to cure at low temperatures. The organic compounds fill the pores between the inorganic oxide chain; hence, the hybrid organic-inorganic material reaches final density at lower temperature. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles were studied to analyze which of them would be best incorporated into the film. The highest hydrophobicity and oleophobicity achieved were by a sample with 133° WCA and 152° DMCA. The sample consisted of an organic and inorganic component as well as hydrophobic silica nanoparticles.
