Evaluation of the Contraception Education Program in the Denton County Chapter of the Planned Parenthood Association of Northeast Texas

The problem of the investigation was to determine the knowledge gain and the attitude change in females attending a contraception education program conducted by the Denton County Chapter of the Planned Parenthood Association of Northeast Texas. The sample population consisted of 75 females attending a Planned Parenthood contraception education program. A pre-test, post-test, and delayed test format was utilized in the study. The study concluded that the contraception education program did not significantly increase contraception knowledge of females attending Planned Parenthood. The investigation also concluded that the program did not significantly change the contraception attitudes of females in the investigation. However, there was a significant contraception knowledge gain one month following initial program exposure.

Parental Conflict in the Context of Multiethnoracial Relationships

The percent of families with parents from different racial or ethnic backgrounds has risen exponentially in the last decades. Approximately 14% of children were born into multiethnoracial (MER) families in the United States in 2015, more than double the rate from 1980 (Bialik, 2017). Studies show that MER couples are more likely to separate or divorce than their monoethnoracial (MoER) counterparts, perhaps due to greater conflict stemming from differing values, coping strategies, and conflict management styles and decreased access to family and community support (Fu, Tora, & Kendall, 2001; Zhang & Van Hook, 2009). With the growing rates of MER couples, there has been increased interest and research addressing the unique benefits and challenges of being in a MER relationship. It is likely that the challenges that arise in MER families peak across the transition to parenthood when couples must negotiate how to merge their respective values, behaviors, and beliefs into a new family unit. The proposed study examines how the ethnoracial composition of couples (i.e., same versus different racial/ethnic backgrounds) predicts levels and increases in coparental conflict across early parenthood; and, in addition, the role of familial support as both a mediator and moderator of this relationship. Identifying the processes linking couples’ ethnoracial composition to the quality of family relationships could help inform parent interventions to better support MER parents across the transition to parenthood.

Gay male parents' transitioning to parenthood

The purpose of this exploratory case study was to explore and describe how two gay male parents transitioned to parenthood. The Family Adjustment and Adaptation Response (FAAR) theoretical model was used as the theoretical framework for understanding the experiences of the two participants in the study. The study also used an interpretivist paradigm and explorative case study design. The participants were purposely selected, and the data were generated by means of a semi-structured interview. The findings indicate that the participants experienced similar resistance from their families of origin after ‘coming out’ to them. The ability of one of the participants to become a parent was questioned. The participants in the study, like most couples, considered various factors such as their financial situation and their medical aid benefits before they decided to become parents. They also had to consider their pathway to parenthood, which in their case was adoption. The participants faced many challenges during the adoption process such as finding a country that allowed gay men to adopt, having limited adoption options due to changes in the law, and trying to get paternity leave. They reported that as parents they felt marginalised by the school system and also by having to deal with insensitive and uncomfortable questions from members of society about their family identity. Their children also experienced bullying at school. Predictors of Paternal Postpartum Depression: A Meta-Analysis

While major depression is a well-defined mental health condition, it's presentation can be vastly different across individuals and groups, and many factors impact one's vulnerability. A critical period of vulnerability to depression is the postpartum period. Despite the frequent assumption that postpartum conditions solely affect women, prevalence estimates of paternal postpartum depression (PPPD) are comparable with those of women. Similar to mothers, men experience significant biological and psychosocial changes following the birth of a child that contribute to the onset of postpartum depression. A growing body of research has identified many potential variables related to PPPD, yet there is no clear consensus as to which variables are the most impactful. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a meta-analysis to aggregate the known findings and quantitatively determine the most salient predictors of PPPD. We hypothesized that the psychosocial factors of relationship satisfaction, social support, partner depression and history of depression would yield the strongest aggregate effect sizes. By searching databases using logical operations, as well as conducting backward and forward searches, we identified 129 articles that met inclusion/exclusion criteria with a total sample size of 114,712 participants (79,743 fathers). Trained independent coders extracted data directly from identified studies, including sample characteristics for descriptives and moderators, and demographic correlates. Correlates of primary interest include but are not limited to maternal depression, history of depression, relationship satisfaction, and social support. Effect sizes represented as Pearson correlations (or transformed to r using standard procedures) were calculated and compared using a random-effects model. In partial support of our hypothesis, fathers' reported history of depression had one of the largest effect sizes (r = .469, unbiased r = .368). The other primary psychosocial factors had relatively moderate effect sizes: social support, r = -.359 (unbiased r = -.398); relationship satisfaction, r = -.300 (unbiased r = -.266); and partner depression, r = .294 (unbiased r = .471). The correlates of PPPD with the strongest effect sizes were all factors associated with personal distress and stressful pregnancies. Demographic correlates (i.e., younger age, non-White ethnicity, lower education, unemployment, lower SES) generally had small though statistically significant effect sizes. This study helps provide a clearer picture of what predicts PPPD to more accurately screen for men at greatest risk and inform the development of diagnostic measures and treatments. It also lays the groundwork for future work in a more unified and productive direction. By researching and sharing better information, we can provide better access and better outcomes for postpartum couples.

La résidence alternée : une sociologie de l'expérience temporelle des parents / Shared residence : a sociology of the parents' temporal experience

La résidence alternée, légalisée en France en 2002, est une pratique minoritaire qui touche toutes les catégories de la population des parents séparés. Elle est entendue de manière stricte comme une organisation qui sépare de façon égale les temps de résidence des enfants entre leurs deux parents. Sous ce principe de symétrie coparentale, le temps vécu par les parents est bichronique, marqué par la succession réitérée de temps de même dimension, les uns avec enfants et les autres sans. Nous explorons l’expérience temporelle de cette parentalité alternée à partir d’une méthode mixte qui croise l’analyse de 55 entretiens avec le traitement de 5 103 questionnaires passés auprès des allocataires de la Caisse d’allocations familiales qui ont des enfants en résidence alternée. Dans une première partie, nous contextualisons la question de la résidence alternée dans la France contemporaine. Nous présentons une cartographie des polémiques qu’elle soulève, précisons les évolutions juridiques et les modalités judiciaires de sa mise en place, avant de remarquer que les études existantes sur cet objet sont peu nombreuses et souvent partielles. Si les déterminants socio-économiques du choix de la résidence alternée sont assez bien connus, le fonctionnement concret des alternances est peu étudié. Notre contribution consiste à ouvrir cette boîte noire. Nous inscrivons notre recherche dans une perspective temporaliste qui consiste à interroger les temps différenciés de l’expérience humaine. Dans la deuxième partie, nous caractérisons l’économie générale du cadre temporel de la résidence alternée, en montrant que le partage égal des temps de résidence ne peut se soustraire au temps calendaire dominant. Les deux espaces créés dans ces conditions se constituent en territoires temporels sur lesquels chacun des parents exerce une souveraineté relative selon des règles qui se construisent à l’usage. Nous proposons une topologie des territoires de l’alternance, attentive à leur structure et à leur plasticité. Dans la troisième partie, nous envisageons l’expérience parentale de la succession des temps avec et sans enfant en commençant par préciser les différences de texture temporelle, avant de décrire les modalités de la concordance de ces temps. Nous terminons en changeant d’échelle temporelle pour interroger l’évolution de l’expérience parentale de l’alternance dans la durée, quand elle est confrontée à la survenance de divers événements comme la recomposition familiale ou la mobilité professionnelle. Dans l’ensemble de la thèse, nous sommes attentifs aux variations dans l’organisation et l’expérience temporelle de la résidence alternée selon les variables lourdes de la sociologie, le sexe, l’âge, le milieu social ou le lieu de résidence des parents. / Shared residence, legalized in France in 2002, is a minority practice that affects all categories of the population of separated parents. It is strictly understood as an arrangement in which the residence times of children is equally shared between their two parents. According to the principle of coparental symmetry, the parents’ experience of time is bichronic, marked by the repeated succession of periods of time of equal length, some with children and others without. We explore the temporal experience of this alternate parenthood using a mixed method that combines the analysis of 55 interviews and 5,103 questionnaires sent to French Family Allowance Fund who have children in shared residence. The first part contextualizes the question of shared residence in contemporary France. The thesis maps the controversies it raises, specifies the legal developments and judicial modalities of its implementation, before noting that existing studies on this subject are few and often partial. While the social and economic determinants of the choice of shared residence are fairly well known, the concrete functioning of alternating residence is not well studied. Our research adopts a temporalistic perspective that consists in questioning the differentiated times of human experience. In the second part we characterize the general economy of the temporal framework of alternate residence, showing that the equal sharing of residence times cannot escape the dominant calendar time. The two spaces created in these conditions are constituted into temporal territories over which each parent exercises relative sovereignty according to rules that are built incrementally. We propose a topology of the territories of alternation, attentive to their structure and plasticity. In the third part, we consider the parental experience of time sequences with and without children by first specifying the differences in temporal texture, before describing the modalities of time harmonization. We conclude by looking at the issue from a long term perspective to question the evolution of the parental experience of alternation over time, when it is confronted with events such as family reconstitution or professional mobility. Throughout the thesis, we are attentive to variations in the organization and temporal experience of shared residence according to major sociological variables, gender, age, social background or parents' place of residence.

This master thesis pursues social developement of intact child raised by the parents with visual impairment. It is specifically aimed at the development communication skills of this child. Childhood education by the parents with visual impairment presents certain specifics, which are manifested on the development of the komunikacni competence of the child. By the persons with visual impairment it is common to encounter enadequate mimic expresion and the absence of gestures. Child adopts the communication according to the model of her parents. But over time, its communication expressions become more and more related to the surrounding society. Considerable role in this process represent the encounters with intact persons, which deliver different non-verbal feedback. On the other side parents with visual impairment stimulate their children to the verbal communication and this verbal communication can become significantly more developed than that of their peers. This thesis focuses on the area of prenatal preparation for men, who are seen as secondary in the area of parenthood. In spite of the still prevailing traditional gender division of roles in Czech family there are alternative forms, which give a chance not only for men, but also for women to choose between private and public sphere. For the purpose of this thesis a qualitative research of prenatal courses for heterosexual couples has been realized with the goal to understand and give a description of construction of fatherhood. The research focuses on the way of reproduction and discruption of gender stereotypes in connection with parenthood, especially fatherhood, and how men experience their new parental role - how they harmonize traditional and contemporary demands. Even though active fatherhood can not be considered as a prototype of western fatherhood, it is important to make it visible and speak about it, because the equal in the family is the first step for the equal status and opportunities for women and men in the public sphere.

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of voluntary childlessness, which, among other things, with regard to the low birth rate, resonates by our society. Its aim is to describe the concept of voluntary childlessness from a sociological point of view, to summarize existing sociological researches on this topic, and primarily to analyze the opinions and motives of women who have opted for voluntary childlessness. For the practical part is used qualitative method of Grounded Theory. The research itself takes the form of in-depth semi-structured interviews, which, thanks to the possibility of responding to specific communication partners, offer the opportunity to look into the lives and values of voluntarily childless women. The conclusion summarizes and interprets knowledge about the opinions and motives of voluntarily childless and offers the professional public a better understanding of this issue.

This thesis focuses on adults with Asperger syndrome, more specifically on parenthood. As these people, just like everyone else, have a right to have children and become parents, this thesis deals with how people with Asperger syndrome themselves view this issue. The theoretical part first presents a description of Asperger syndrome, how it manifests and the process of diagnosis. Then the period of adolescence and adulthood is described. Finally, the thesis deals with the issue of supporting people with Asperger syndrome. The research part states the objective of the thesis which is to find out what parenthood and family means to people with Asperger's, and whether in the Czech Republic there is any form of support offered to these people regarding parenthood and raising children. The qualitative research method was selected for this thesis and the specific method of questioning, or more specifically, interviewing. The interviews were conducted remotely per the request of the respondents. Subsequently, the thesis presents a characteristic of the sample group which comprised adults with Asperger syndrome, then the process of data processing during which each statement was given a code which was then assigned to a specific category. The aim of our study was to investigate how women in management positions experience the relationship between parenthood and their careers. We also wanted to study how these women experienced expectations from society on parenting in relation to their careers. The study's empirical data is based on semi-structured interviews with eight women in management positions. We analyzed the data from a gender perspective with the help of authors Connell's and Pearse's (2015) concepts of gender domain, gender regime, gender order and gender roles. We also used Elvin-Nowak's and Thomsson's (2001) discourses maintain separate spheres and availability and immunization. Magnusson's (2006) concepts of limitations and delimitations as well as West´s and Zimmerman's (1987) concept doing gender were also applied to the data analysis. The results from our study showed that female managers could be divided into two groups. One group where parenthood was valued higher than professional life and where the female managers had longer parental leave and more days of child care than their partners. The second group valued professional life higher than parenthood and the female managers in this group had shorter parental leave and fewer days of child care than their partners. However, all study participants, no matter the group, felt that parenting and professional life interacted with each other and that one sphere affected the other. Thus, the study participants could not at the same time be as involved in parenting as in their professional life or vice versa. Participants who chose to take greater responsibility for child care did not experience any views from society whilst participants who took less responsibility for child care did. The views were based on the expectations from society on motherhood in relation to a management position.
