The media and cultural productions in the context of the 'Third Chimurenga' in Zimbabwe, 2000 to 2005

Pasirayi, Phillip January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the role of the media in a "hybrid regime". Taking post-2000 Zimbabwe as a "hybrid regime" in flux over time, the thesis explores the media policies and strategies deployed by the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party in the context of the "revolutionary" seizure of white-owned farms in Zimbabwe in the early 2000s, what became known as the "Third Chimurenga". I examine how the ZANU (PF) media strategy was developed under the newly created Ministry/Department of Information and Publicity in line with the hegemonic ambitions and legitimation needs of the hybrid system that the party built during this period. Through this, the thesis exposes the shortcomings in the literature on hybrid regimes and a Zimbabweanist scholarly literature on the media and 'patriotic history', which both overly emphasise the formal media, and argues for a much deeper understanding of the role of the 'non-traditional' media and political practices that are historically and culturally constituted in the survival or persistence of these regimes. By showing the importance of history and culture in practices of regime legitimation and survival, the thesis challenges much of the assumptions within the literature on hybrid regimes which is largely quantitative and electoralist in approach. This thesis explores: i) the means and mechanisms of media control in a hybrid regime; ii) the tensions and contradictions that characterise a hybrid media system; iii) the role of the media in legitimacy construction, specifically how journalists framed events, and; iv) the role of the 'non-traditional' media or the forms of media drawn from history and culture in regime legitimation and survival. The thesis is based on interviews with ZANU (PF) elites, senior government officials, journalists, artists and a media content analysis as well as a variety of political actors in Murewa, a particularly violent and contested district in Zimbabwe.

CONCEPTIONS OF PATRIOTISM AMONG CHINESE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN U.S. HIGHER EDUCATION: A PHENOMENOGRAPHIC STUDY

Xiaoyue Qin (8071649) 14 January 2021 (has links)

Chinese international students make up the largest group of international students in the United States, especially in the higher education sector. In the context of rising patriotism and nationalism in the China and the U.S. accompanied by deteriorating China-U.S. relationship and some recent incidents that showed Chinese international students’ intense patriotic sentiments, this study explored the ways in which Chinese international students in U.S. higher education perceive patriotism. More specifically, the study aims to answer two research questions: 1. How do Chinese international students in the U.S. conceptualize patriotism? 2. What are the factors that impact Chinese international students’ construction of patriotism?

The study adopted phenomenography as the research methodology and recruited 15 participants with varied backgrounds from a Midwest University. In-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed to generate the different categories that described ways of perceiving patriotism. The findings demonstrated five categories of patriotism: irrational patriotism, extreme patriotism, identity patriotism, constructive patriotism and cosmopolitan patriotism. The five categories had complex relationships with identity patriotism at the core. The study also revealed that Chinese international students’ construction of patriotism was impacted by formal education, extracurricular activities, media propaganda, family’s influence, Chinese culture, and their own life experiences. This study revealed the dynamic and multifaceted political stances of Chinese international students and offered more explanations for their patriotic behaviors instead of portraying them as the brainwashed generation. Practical implications and recommendations for future research were offered based on the findings of this study.

The Muse of Fire: Liberty and War Songs as a Source of American History

Bowman, Kent A. (Kent Adam), 1947- 08 1900 (has links)
The development of American liberty and war songs from a few themes during the pre-Revolutionary period to a distinct form of American popular music in the Civil War period reflects the growth of many aspects of American culture and thought. This study therefore treats as historical documents the songs published in newspapers, broadsides, and songbooks during the period from 1765 to 1865. Chapter One briefly summarizes the development of American popular music before 1765 and provides other introductory material. Chapter Two examines the origin and development of the first liberty-song themes in the period from 1765 to 1775. Chapters Three and Four cover songs written during the American Revolution. Chapter Three describes battle songs, emphasizing the use of humor, and Chapter Four examines the figures treated in the war song. Chapter Five covers the War of 1812, concentrating on the naval song, and describes the first use of dialect in the American war song. Chapter Six covers the Mexican War (1846-1848) and includes discussion of the aggressive American attitude toward the war as evidenced in song. Chapter Six also examines the first antiwar songs. Chapters Seven and Eight deal with the Civil War. Chapter Seven treats derivative war songs, including "Dixie" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Chapter Eight treats prominent composers of popular war songs during the Civil War: Stephen F. Foster, George F. Root, and Henry Clay Work. Chapter Nine concludes the study with observations on the development of war songs from 1765 to 1865.
