Hedonic price analysis of tomatoes sold by hawkers in the Vhembe District of Limpopo Province, South Africa

Sigidi, Khumbudzo Zelda 18 May 2017 (has links)
MSCAGR (Agricultural Economics) / Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness / study aimed to determine factors that influenced the price of tomatoes sold by hawkers on the roadside market. The study also aimed at determining whether any socio-economic characteristics of hawkers who sold tomatoes had significant impact on the price paid my consumers. The study was conducted in the Thulamela local municipality under Vhembe District of Limpopo, South Africa. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select participants for this study. A sample size of 198 hawkers were drawn randomly. Structured questionnaires were administered through face-to-face interview. Descriptive statistics, correlation matrix, multiple linear hedonic regression and stepwise linear regression were used to analyse collected data. With regards socio-economic characteristics, only age was found to have significant impact on the market price received by hawkers. Smooth appearance, rough appearance, round shape, oval shape, and red and yellow colour tomatoes had a significant impact on the average market price. It is therefore recommended that attribute such appearances, colour, shapes and sizes of tomatoes should be considered when selling tomatoes at both retail and farm level. This will result in more purchase of tomatoes that will eventually contribute to increase in household income and reduction in poverty.

Trabalhadores ambulantes e camelôs no centro de Aracaju : trabalho, precarirazação e (des) proteção previdenciária

Aragão, Maciela Rocha Souza 07 October 2013 (has links)
The present study aims to evaluate the work of hawkers / peddlers of Aracaju, as an activity that provides informal (or not) access to social welfare policy. Therefore, it was necessary to draw the socioeconomic profile of street vendors / hawkers who work at night and on Saturdays at Aracaju´s downtown, featuring the work of hawkers / peddlers while a segment of informal work and precarious condition; identify whether these workers contribute to social security and know the actions of the government, which contribute to the access of hawkers / peddlers to the ``formalization´´ and social security. Reference to the historical materialist dialectical method as a thread of theorizing and analysis presented here. The universe consisted of 64 workers affiliated to the Association of Autonomous Workers, Vendors and Craftsmen of the State of Sergipe and who are authorized by the Municipal Urban Services Company (EMSURB)/ Municipality of Aracaju to trade their goods in the city´s commercial center. Data collection was conducted through structured interviews, via the application of forms, 30 street vendors / hawkers, whose choice was defined by the following criteria: accessibility and / or convenience of the interviewee and authorization by signing the ``Consent free and Clear´´. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with technical representatives of the following agencies: EMSURB, FUNDAT, SEBRAE and INSS. Its main results point to the fact that the precarious and informal employment in Brazil has historical relationship with the peculiarities of the labor market´s formation, which also led to the establishment of a system of wage labor, pension interdependent and regulated by the labor legislation. This historical relationship between formal employment and social security reflects the street vendors / hawkers from Aracaju´s downtown, who lack of social security protection, focusing, the nature of the occupation as inherent in the capitalist mode of production and the strategies created by government, which were not accessible or able to attract this segment of informal employment, given the nature contributory this policy.

Abstract: The transformations in the world of the work in the 70s and, over all, from the 80s and 90s, had resulted in a crisis of the ¿Fordism¿ and in the consolidation of new trends in the world of the work, characterized by processes of reduction of the number of laborers (traditional industrial workers), increase of the outsourcing process, increasing heterogeneity with the magnifying of women in labor and intensifying of the proletariat process, characterized by the new contractual modalities that imply in precarious jobs and partial time. In a general way, the specialized literature has pointed to the fact that one of the main impacts of the productive reorganization in the dynamics of the work trade and in the daily life of the workers is the crisis of the "protecting work" and its interfaces with the growth of "the informal" activities. In this direction, the great question that leads this research expresses itself in the following fidgets: are changes in the informality of the central region of Goiânia occurring in function of this kind of transformations? In positive case, what is new in this new informality? What does it change in the profile of the ambulant ones? What would new processes characterize their insertion in the economy? How have the productive changes, associated to the new technologies, affected them? Do the crisis of the job, the productive reorganization and the precarious conditions of the formal work trade contribute for the constitution of a new heterogeneity? And, what is new in the relation of this informal sector of the central region of Goiânia-GO with the public power from the 80s and 90s? / Doutorado / Doutor em Ciências Sociais
