Makers of Mamelodi

Wolmarans, Petrus Stefanus January 2017 (has links)
South Africa currently faces challenges such as high levels of unemployment, inequality and poverty. The skills deficiency in South Africa is one of the biggest obstacles to finding employment and poverty reduction. According to McGrath (2012), the TVET sector needs to be strengthened in order to provide access to high quality technical vocational education for all. This dissertation investigates the potential of a TVET college as a catalytic public building to uplift its community through both secular and educational functions. Humans are makers, everything around us are either made by humans or nature. By possessing the necessary skills to shape things, we also have the skill to shape our futures. This project investigation will specifically look at skills as intangible heritage and how collaboration can empower communities in shaping their own futures in a resilient manner. / Mini Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Architecture / MArch (Prof) / Unrestricted

Redemption : arresting the daily exodus from Mamelodi through place making and production

Taljaard, Tialise 09 December 2013 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the idea of creating an engaging public place by introducing productive activity in a dormant area of Mamelodi where the effects of Pendulum migration and waste accumulation have caused public spaces to become inaccessible and functional only as spaces of departure. The site selection will involve looking for a space with a highly layered construct that captures the essence of what Mamelodi has become overtime. This proposed programme will aid in the investigation of testing whether a dormant space has the potential to inspire transformation and change in the social and public realm of this informal settlement. Through the theoretical premise of Place Making, the investigation will focus on whether social spaces, activity generators, existing contexts and past events could be layered to create a functional public place. The hierarchy and transition of spaces from one to another could allow one to understand the process of change on site, as well as the process of change in terms of waste material that is reused and transformed into something useful. This thesis document explores the idea of a building as a threshold and solvent of different spaces that would normally be split from each other. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Zaslavsky, Ricardo January 2017 (has links)
Pendulum migration is a daily mobility between two different cities that is made, traditionally, to work or study. However, it also can happen to look for healthcare. This kind of human mobility is common around the world inside the national territory of each country, like the movement between a small city with a lack of health human and technological resources and the major city next to it that contains these resources. It is called regional pendulum migration. But it has many particularities when this movement is responsible for people crossing periodically an international border for this end, which represents the international pendulum migration. This crossborder healthcare may influence the adherence to the treatment of chronic diseases like HIV infection and, for this reason, modify the prognosis of these patients. The aim of this dissertation is to compare the prognosis of HIV+ patients living in the city of Iguazu Falls that makes the follow-up in the Specialized Assistance Service (SAS) of this city with patients who makes regional and international pendulum migration for healthcare in the same health facility.
