A associação entre percepção de sucesso na carreira e valores individuais / Association between career success perception and individual values

Betina Silvestri Miranda 16 July 2013 (has links)
Peoples\' perceptions concerning their own professional careers have been affected by demographic and cultural changes, at the same time as technological, economical and political changes influence the construction of new organizational structures. According to such context, researchers have proposed changes on career concepts, in order to represent modern trajectories, more idiosyncratic and self-directed fashion. Following this conceptual line, it was perceived the need to reassess the construct of career success. It was further suggested that individual values would influence the effects obtained by the individual career. Therefore, this study aimed to verify whether associations exist between personal values and criteria for career success. To this end, it was constructed and validated an inventory of career success, evaluating its dimensional structure and association with individual values and observing the proximity of the two constructs in a perceptual map. Validation results indicated six factors of career success criteria used by individuals. Multidimensional scaling identified two bipolar dimensions that oppose a focus on the individual to relational and factual aspects of the perceptual consequences of career. Proximity representations and associations between the two constructs suggested that career success factors are oriented by the same purposes as the individual values. Thus, this dissertation contributed to a better understanding of the dimensional structure of career success as a construct and its association with a system of individual values.

MEASUREMENT AND PREDICTION OF LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS BASED ON ATTRIBUTES

Hovatter, Thomas W. 01 January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate any relationship between an established group of senior military officers' leadership styles and their personal values as a predictor of future effective leadership. The study evaluated the relationship between Nelson's (1989) 80-item Personal Values Profile (PVP) and Bass and Avolio's (2004) full-range leadership model (MLQ 5X) as a means to predict effective leadership. The respondents to the surveys were a unique sample of convenience consisting of 1978 graduates of the United States Naval Academy who had spent 30 years as officers in either the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps. The results of the MLQ 5X indicated that the group of career military officers scored higher than Bass and Avolio's normative group in seven of the nine leadership styles and in all three of the leadership outcomes. The two leadership styles in which the career military officers scored lower than the normative group were in the passive-avoidant or non-leadership categories. This sample group scored higher than the normative group in every category of transactional leadership styles as well as in every category of transformational leadership styles. Linear regression analysis of the full-range leadership model against the Personal Values Profile identified a moderate predictor of effective leadership based on personal values when transactional leadership and transformational leadership were combined. A second predictor for effective leadership was found when only transformational leadership was evaluated.

The effect of consumers' personal values and attitudes towards appliance retailers' complaint handling on their complaint behaviour

de Klerk, Marisa Janette January 2016 (has links)
Consumer complaint behaviour research in transitional and emerging countries, including South Africa, is still in its infancy stage. The vast changes to the South African consumer landscape along with the socio-political changes and the multicultural population's ongoing cultural changes necessitate the monitoring of changes in personal values. However, very little research has been done in South Africa regarding consumers' personal values. The effect of personal values on complaint behaviour in a South African context has also not yet been explored. As an extension of the social adaptation theory, several researchers have proposed a value-attitude-behaviour (VAB) hierarchy model (Homer & Kahle, 1988; Cai & Shannon, 2012) in order to explain the relationship between values and behaviour. The model proposes that causality flows from abstract values, through mid-range attitudes, to specific behaviours (Homer & Kahle, 1988; Hayley, Zinkiewicz & Hardiman, 2014); that is, values influence behaviour indirectly through attitudes. While the VAB model has been confirmed in a variety of consumer behaviour contexts, it has not yet been explored in a South African complaint behaviour context. This study therefore used social adaptation theory and the VAB model as theoretical framework to determine the effect of consumers' personal values and attitudes towards appliance retailers' complaint handling on their consumer complaint behaviour in the South African context. In addition, the relationships between demographic variables and personal values and also between demographic variables and consumer complaint behaviour were explored. A survey was administered to consumers who were dissatisfied with the performance of a major household appliance within a four-year memory recall period. Data was collected via a self-administered questionnaire measuring personal values with Kahle's (1983) List of Values (LOV) and attitudes toward appliance retailers' complaint handling, using an adapted version of Keng, Richmond and Han's (1995) "Attitudes toward businesses" scale. Convenience sampling and snowball sampling were employed in Tshwane, a major metropolitan area of South Africa, which generated 361 usable questionnaires. Exploratory factor analysis revealed three value dimensions, namely (1) Harmony and Respect, (2) Hedonism and (3) Achievement. Results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed that higher valuing of any one of the three value dimensions lead to more negative attitudes towards appliance retailers' complaint handling. Furthermore, multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that more negative attitudes towards appliance retailers' complaint handling lead to a decreased likelihood of engaging in public complaint behaviour. Moreover, ANOVA revealed relationships between specific personal value dimensions and gender, age and population group. The study has implications for marketers, policy makers, appliance retailers and consumer protection organisations. / Navorsing oor verbruikers se klagte-gedrag in opkomende lande, insluitend Suid-Afrika, is nie baie ver gevorder nie. / Dissertation (MConsumer Science)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Consumer Science / MConsumer Science / Unrestricted

Entrepreneurial Intention: Role of personal values and materialism

Rai, Prerana 01 May 2022 (has links)
Entrepreneurship is a major economic force and a salient personal behavior through which individuals achieve personal goals. A better understanding of entrepreneurial intention is crucial to fostering entrepreneurial behavior since intention precedes behavior. Considering the importance of the concepts of social and commercial entrepreneurs, the study examined whether social and commercial entrepreneurial intentions are motivated by a similar set of attitudes and personal values. It provided an answer to why and how an individual intends to become either a social or a commercial entrepreneur. To understand motivational similarities and differences between social and commercial entrepreneurial intention, the conceptual framework relying on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Basic Human Values Theory was proposed. In the developed model, the value set of entrepreneurial intentions is differentiated and categorized through Schwartz’s personal values and materialism. And perceived behavioral control and attitude towards entrepreneurship, two constructs capturing attitudinal differences, were used as two main explanatory variables with subjective norms (SN) as a moderator to represent its motivating power on attitudes, values, and intentions. Analyses of survey data collected from 1029 participants demonstrated a significant direct effect of attitude towards entrepreneurship, perceived behavioral control, self-enhancement values, and materialism on both entrepreneurial intentions. Self-transcendence affects social entrepreneurial intention significantly. Further, in the presence of positive subjective norms, a positive change in perceived behavioral control led to the development of both entrepreneurial intentions. And in the presence of openness to change values, a positive change in attitude toward commercial entrepreneurship motivated the development of commercial entrepreneurial intention. The remaining personal values negatively moderated the relationship between attitudinal components and entrepreneurial intentions. In the presence of materialism, a positive change in attitudinal components led to a negative intention to pursue entrepreneurship as a career. The corroborating evidence of the effect of materialism on social entrepreneurial intention development supported the underlying economic motive of social entrepreneurs. SPSS hierarchical regression technique tested proposed hypotheses using data collected from student subjects and the MTurk sample.

Personal Value Priorities in Autonomous Vehicle Discourse

Tomas, Patrick 09 November 2022 (has links)
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have become increasingly prevalent in modern society, with multiple companies pursuing avenues to advance technology. Despite the promises of safer driving, mitigating accidents and reducing stress, mixed opinions exist on the reliability and trustworthiness of the technology. While many factors form opinions regarding AVs, the component of personal values in AV discourse has not been well-documented. This research focuses on understanding which personal values are most prominent in AV discourse and how individuals prioritize these personal values. We studied two AV-focused data sources to gain perspective: 24 TED Talk transcripts and 20,000 Reddit user posts. Next, we scored the prevalence of personal values using the Personal Values Dictionary (PVD). Our results found that self-direction, achievement, power, stimulation, and conformity had an overall positive inclination in AV discourse. However, we also found value conflicts between both data sets, indicating a potential dissonance between professional opinions and those of typical consumers. Our findings provide insight into values literature and issues consumers bring up when discussing or adopting AVs. Our research on value conflicts can also link to consumers' potential adoption of AVs. Thus, we provide potentially useful perspectives for companies to address these concerns directly in their AV production, advertising, and design philosophies.

The Effects of Life Values Among Non-Psychedelic Drug Users and Psychedelic Drug Users: A Comparison Study on Life Values

Peng, Lin 01 May 2014 (has links)
The intent of this study was to compare life value differences using the Life Values Inventory. Differences among non-psychedelic users and psychedelic users were examined. Participants, ranging from age 18 to 48 from the University of Central Florida (UCF), a large state university, were recruited on a voluntarily basis. This was primarily done through online message board, the Sona System, and classroom announcements. The study was presented through the Sona System provided by UCF. In addition, all participants were students of the university. Results indicated significant differences among three out of 14 life values measured. The three life values that were shown to be significantly different among the non-psychedelic users and psychedelic users were: 1) concern for others, 2) loyalty to family or group, and 3) responsibility. In addition, the life value of spirituality was only found to be marginally significant.

Values and the perceived importance of ethics and social responsibility: The US versus China

Fukukawa, Kyoko, Lee, G.M., Shafer, W.E. January 2006 (has links)
No / This study examines the effects of nationality (U.S. vs. China) and personal values on managers' responses to the Perceived Role of Ethics and Social Responsibility (PRESOR) scale. Evidence that China's transition to a socialist market economy has led to widespread business corruption, led us to hypothesize that People's Republic of China (PRC) managers would believe less strongly in the importance of ethical and socially responsible business conduct. We also hypothesized that after controlling for national differences, managers' personal values (more specifically, self-transcendence values) would have a significant impact on PRESOR responses. The hypotheses were tested using a sample of practicing managers enrolled in part-time MBA programs in the two countries. The results indicate that nationality did not have a consistent impact on PRESOR responses. After controlling for national differences, self-transcendence values had a significant positive impact on two of the three PRESOR dimensions. Conservation values such as conformity and tradition also had a significant association with certain dimensions of the PRESOR scale.

The influence of consumers' personal values on the country of origin effect: a study with chinese household products

Giraldi, Janaina de Moura Engracia 30 November 2006 (has links)
Stereotypes people tend to develop towards other people and countries and, consequently, towards the products made in these countries, can transcend specific brand or products evaluations and determine, to some extent, their purchase intentions and behavior. This is the so-called country-of-origin effect. The researches done on this subject indicate that the country-of-origin effect can be moderated by a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic information about the product, and also by environmental and cultural factors. Since there are few academic papers on the influence that personal values exert on the evaluations of different countries and foreign products, a study that focuses this relation becomes relevant. In this context, the present thesis approaches the following research problem: what are the personal values that affect the consumers? evaluations of foreign products, based on these products? countries image? Specifically, it was verified if there were differences in the referred relation, depending on demographic characteristics such as gender, age, familiarity with the country and education background. The empirical research was predominantly exploratory, using the survey method for collecting the data. The target population was defined as post-graduation students and former students from three institutions located at São Paulo state, representing potential buyers of foreign products. The products under analysis were Chinese household appliances. As a result, it is worth mentioning that personal values are a multi-dimensional construct, with each dimension exerting a different influence on foreign products evaluation. The personal values that most affect foreign products evaluation are those related to the Civility dimension (Loving, Cheerful, Clean, Responsible, Polite, Helpful and Honest). Next, come the values from the Self-direction dimension (Logical, Intellectual, Capable, Imaginative, Independent, Courageous, Broad-minded and Ambitious). Last, there are the values from the Conformity dimension (Obedient, Self-controlled and Forgiving). It was concluded, moreover, that consumers? personal values differently affect the evaluation of foreign products, depending on consumers? demographic characteristics such as age, gender, familiarity with the country and education background. It was foreseen that, in younger consumers, there would be a more favorable influence of personal values in the country-of-origin effect than in the older ones. However, this hypothesis was not confirmed. Other hypothesis was that in male consumers, there would also be a more favorable influence of personal values in the country-of-origin effect than in the female ones. Nevertheless, such hypothesis was not confirmed either. There were also verified differences concerning the personal values that most influence the country-of-origin effect, depending on respondents? familiarity level with China and education background (Exact, Humanity and Biological Sciences). The results provide an additional understanding with regards to the influences consumers suffer during a purchase decision process. Therefore, it is considered that it was made an advance in the state of the art of researches about the country of origin theme, since aspects not measured in other works were investigated. With the results obtained, it is believed that marketing professionals and researchers can better manage the use of a products? country of origin as a marketing tool. Additionally, these research findings can help governmental agencies that are responsible for developing a country?s image to adjust the branding strategies to different groups of people in the world, depending on the personal values that predominate in each group.
