Recognition of Facial Affect in individuals scoring high and low on Psychopathic Personality CharacteristicsAli, Afiya January 2007 (has links)
The accuracy of perception of facial emotion expressions was studied in individuals with low and high psychopathic personality characteristics in a sample of 21 male and 39 female university students. Participants completed the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI), and the Behavioural Inhibition Scale and the Behavioural Activation Scale (BIS/BAS) as measures of psychopathy. Participants completed a computerised emotion recognition task containing six emotions of facial expressions (each emotion had five different intensities). The results showed that participants scoring low on the BIS and high on the BAS scores showed significant impairments in the recognition of both sad and fearful expressions. On the other hand, group scoring high on the PPI, showed significant impairment in the recognition of angry, but not fearful or sad expressions in the total sample. Males with high psychopathic personality characteristics showed significant impairments in the recognition of sad, fearful and angry expressions compared to males with low psychopathic personality characteristics. On the other hand females with high psychopathic personality characteristics showed significant impairment in recognising the expression of disgust only compared to females with low psychopathic personality characteristics. The PPI and the BIS/BAS scales showed reasonable alpha reliabilities with some exceptions for one subscale in each measure. Correlations between the PPI and the BIS/BAS scales were weak to moderate. The current findings suggest that different dimensions of psychopathy may be associated with selective impairments in recognising unpleasant emotion expressions in others.

Interpersonal Needs and Vocational Interest: Is There a Relationship?Rose, Grace (Grace Elizabeth) 08 1900 (has links)
Several theories have developed in an attempt to understand how personality characteristics impact on occupational behavior. In contemplating occupational choice some theorists have utilized a psychoanalytic approach in viewing occupational choice as an appropriate way of blending the pleasure and reality principles. Other theorists have interpreted occupational choice as a means of fulfilling certain needs. The present study focused on the interpersonal needs of Inclusion, Control and Affection. It was proposed that these interpersonal needs play an integral role in one's choice of occupation. The study focused on three vocational interest categories—Realistic, Enterprising and Conventional. The subjects were male applicants for one of the following occupations (each representative of one of the three previously mentioned vocational interest areas), project manager at a construction site, restaurant manager and accountant. The total number of subjects was 288.
Specifically, the present study investigated the presence of an orientation towards persons and an orientation away from persons and the impact of this on occupational choice. The study also attempted to extract three factors representing Inclusion, Control and Affection from an array of personality scales. The results supported the presence of a towards person orientation; however, an away from person orientation was not clearly differentiated. Similarly, a factor representing Inclusion was derived but the results failed to find factors representing Control and Affection.
Results indicated a positive relationship between a subject's overt choice of an Enterprising occupation and measured interest. It was hypothesized that subjects with Enterprising vocational interest would have greater overall interpersonal needs than subjects with Conventional or Realistic interests. This hypothesis was not supported. However, further analyses revealed that subjects with an application choice for a restaurant manager's job had a higher need to exert Control than did the other subjects. Support was not found for the hypothesis that subjects with a measured interest for Enterprising occupations would have greater overall interpersonal needs than the other subjects. Further analyses revealed that subjects with Realistic measured interest had a lower need to exert Control, than did the other subjects.

Personality Characteristics and Relationship Satisfaction of Individuals who Attended the Preparación de Novios Weekend WorkshopMada, Rosalba 01 January 2016 (has links)
Research is limited and inconsistent when identifying basic constructs that improve relationship satisfaction; there is also limited research on marriage education efforts that address effects of premarital programs on relationship satisfaction and how they are influenced by personality. Research questions in this study explored the relationship between personality characteristics and relationship satisfaction and the relationship among personality characteristics and affective communication, role orientation, problem-solving communication, aggression, family history of distress, time together, disagreement about finances, and sexual dissatisfaction, as measured with the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (5th ed.) and Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised. The family systems theory provided the theoretical foundation. A convenience sample of (N = 58) of individuals, who attended the premarital education program, Preparación de Novios weekend workshop, was recruited. While overall regression analysese were not statistically significant, prohibiting the rejection of null hypotheses, 3 independent variables emerged that supported the results of existing literature and may be useful for future research: affective communication and gender, role orientation and independence, and aggression and independence. These findings have implications for positive social change by informing the efforts of therapists, counselors, and others working with couples, who may note the areas of greatest influence on relationship satisfaction and focus on those problem areas in a relationship with potentially greater impact on satisfaction.
