YXE: beyond boundaries

2014 September 1900 (has links)
In this post-apocalyptic epic set after the collapse of the Digital Age, the region of YXE finds itself at war. Fifteen-year-old Petra seeks to save his pod from the Grunthers, a nomadic tribe of mutineers that have triggered a resurgence of the deadly disease known as rouge. In addition to facing the Grunthers, Petra must also deal with conflicts that have arisen between the settlers from other pods and his own, and the challenges within his own family. After his grandfather’s untimely death, Petra suddenly finds himself the leader of their pod. With the help of his friend Avery, he learns that loyalty comes from actions not mere words, and battles towards survival at all costs. In the meantime, Samuel is also fighting for the survival of his tribe, the Grunthers, while his wife languishes with a fatal case of rouge. There is much at stake as Petra sets forth beyond boundaries to regain his land in YXE. For intermediate-age readers ages 11 and up.

Documenting Deforestation at Sidd al-Ahmar, Petra Region, Jordan

Addison, Erin Heather January 2006 (has links)
This study documented the decline of the forests of the Petra Region of Jordan, as represented at Sidd al-Ahmar, within the Petra Archaeological Park. Biogeographical and anthropological methods were employed to explore the history of the forests. Archaeology and historical narratives provided a portrait of the study area from prehistory to the early 20th century. Aerial surveys from 1924 and 2002 were analyzed to quantify changes in forest cover. Mapping and inventory of indicator species measured short-term change between 2003 and 2006. Interviews, field observation and participant observation in the tourist industry provided a socio-cultural context for quantitative analysis and for recommendations for remediation of pressures on the remaining forest. The research documents a 58% decline in tree cover between 1924-2002, and a decline of 4.23% between 2003-2006. The conclusions question concepts such as "landscape integrity" and the usefulness of non-interventionist ideology in an historic and rapidly changing region.

Kindverwysing in die poësie van Petra Müller

Strutt, Fredrica Cornelia 07 1900 (has links)
When looking at child references in the poetry of Petra Muller, it is obvious that they are literary functional at all times. The poet, as artist, manages to tap the readers' outside knowledge of the child's sphere of life. The result is the foregrounding of the comparison between child and adult resulting in the realisation of the artist's work as an effort to reshape his world by looking at it through the eyes of the unspoilt child. Together with the many poems where child references act mainly as a way of presenting such poems as enjoyable as possible, it becomes extremely functional as a leitmotif. The child reference as used by Muller as poetic technique also becomes reminder to the reader of what art is all about. Petra Muller's poems can not be read separately from the child reference and all it's implications. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / M.A. (Afrikaans)

The Nabataean Façade Monuments of Petra, Jordan: An Assessment of the Façade Monuments and Their Geological Environment.

Newbold, Josie M. 04 January 2021 (has links)
The Nabataean people controlled the Petra region of modern-day Jordan from sometime before 300 BCE until the Roman Annexation of the Nabataean kingdom in 106 CE. The Nabataeans are known for the monumental façades carved into the sandstone cliffs surrounding their capital city. The first survey of the façade monuments was undertaken by Brünnow and Domaszewski in 1904. They created a typology that has only been slightly modified by subsequent authors including Judith McKenzie (1990). This typology does not account for all of the variations in façade types in Petra, thus creating a need for a new typology proposed in this paper. Additionally, no previous studies of the façade monuments has examined the impact of geological structures such as the orientation of the pre-existing cliffs, the presence of faults and fractures, and the height of the available cliffs. This study also assesses the potential role of naturally occurring zones of weakness in the sedimentary cliffs such as those created by faults and fractures caused by regional and local tectonic activity and their potential impact on Nabataean rock-cut structures. In order to organize the 300 Nabataean façades in this data set, it also became necessary to develop a new and more comprehensive typology of these structures than has been previously developed in Nabataean scholarship.

A Formal Study of Applied Ancient Water Management Techniques In the Present Water Crisis

Gonzalez Cruz, Jesann M 01 January 2017 (has links)
Many areas of the world are experiencing the effects of the water crisis. The water crisis is a widespread phenomenon whereby many regions are experiencing a shortage of water, lacking access to clean potable water. This study uses existing literature to examine the ways in which the ecological knowledge of ancient civilizations can be applied to modern water management in attempt to address the current water crisis. The literature reviewed for this study, stemming from notable books and peer reviewed journals, were published between 1882 and the present year. As part of a purposive sample, the following civilizations were chosen: Tenochtitlan (presently Mexico City), Angkor, and Petra. Past and present water management in the three locations are examined, as well as their impact on industry and social systems. Findings within the literature indicate that ancient methods of water management are able to provide water for populations of equal or greater size than their modern counterparts. Similarly, some studies have determined that modern water systems are problematic in their production of waste by-products, and inefficiency in water collection and distribution. The implications determined from the results of this study are discussed, as well as the limitations that arose throughout the review. The study seeks to fill the gap in literature connecting ancient water management techniques to modern practices, helping establish suggestions for reforms to address the current water crisis in the process.
