Building close and long-lasting relationships with focal customers: an empirical study of seed potato purchasing by Filipino potato farmersBatt, Peter J. January 2003 (has links)
In the highlands of the Northern Philippines, a model of long-term relationships between potato farmers and their preferred seed suppliers is proposed. In the absence of any certified seed system that might provide some guarantee of seed quality, farmers prefer to transact with those seed suppliers with whom they have had some favourable prior experience. Such suppliers provide both the best quality seed and, since most farmers must borrow the capital to purchase the seed, the most favourable terms of repayment. As there is much uncertainty in the exchange, the farmer's relationship with their preferred seed supplier is based on trust. However, since the farmer's satisfaction with the exchange cannot be ascertained until after purchase, trust is antecedent to satisfaction. As satisfaction is derived from the economic benefits the farmer obtains, satisfaction will lead to the farmer's desire to maintain the relationship. Satisfaction is enhanced both by the seed supplier's willingness to extend credit and to provide information. As there is much variation between alternative seed supplier's offer quality, satisfaction will result in the farmer becoming more dependent upon that seed supplier who makes the best offer. Furthermore, having provided the farmer with financial assistance, seed suppliers will find that they have constrained their opportunities to use coercive influence strategies, for in the absence of any formal contract, farmer's may readily default on the loan. The use of coercive influence strategies will reduce both the farmer's trust in their preferred seed supplier and the farmer's desire to maintain the relationship. / While trust is more important in the transitional economies, critical problems emerge with the use of standardised item measures and scales developed in the industrial countries. Cultural specific adjustments are necessary to ensure social constructs such a trust are functionally equivalent. However, in the context of long-term relationships where satisfaction is also cumulative, introducing measures of both economic and social satisfaction have the potential to overlap with the generally accepted measures of trust.

In the Philippines, amok is often viewed as a form of homicidal behaviour to which Muslim Filipino or Moro men are prone. Various assumptions about contemporary Filipino perceptions of amok are challenged in this thesis. It is assumed that this perception corresponds with the actual occurrence of amok in the Philippines, and this is challenged by the demonstration that the perception is merely a construct. The perception of amok is assumed to be the culmination of attempts by Spaniards, Americans and Filipinos to discern the true nature of amok, and this is challenged by the fact that discrepancies exist between recognition of amok by the Spanish on one hand and the Americans and Christian Filipinos on the other. It is argued that contemporary Filipino understanding of amok is the product of two factors: the American drive to acquire information about Filipinos that would enable them to control their newly acquired subjects, and the conflict between Americans and Filipinos generated by this attempt at control. The association of amok with Muslim Filipinos is the outcome of the mistaken conflation of amok with the juramentado convention of the Moros, and the idea that the Muslim Filipinos were the most Malay of the Malay ‘subraces’ in the Philippines and thus most likely to run amok. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Agrobiodiversity Enhancement for the sustainability of the tropical uplands: An evaluation of agricultural land use in Liliw, Laguna, PhilippinesWagan, Amparo M. January 2008 (has links)
Agrobiodiversity Enhancement (ABDE) is a strategy that has been advanced for preventing environmental degradation without losing agricultural productivity. However, there is not yet sufficient evidence to support the important role that ABDE might have for managing agricultural land use in the tropical uplands. This research is an attempt to help fill this knowledge gap. The general aim of the thesis was to explore the potential of ABDE as a management alternative for agricultural land use in the uplands in terms of environmental protection, productivity and farmer acceptability. To achieve the aim, a methodological framework for evaluating agricultural land use in the uplands was developed. The methodology aimed at allowing one to understand the influence of agricultural land use on natural resources and farm productivity and the social factors that will most likely influence land users to enhance agrobiodiversity of their production. The methodological framework provided a minimum set of criteria and indicators that can be used for assessing agricultural land uses in the uplands. Main criteria for the evaluation included protection, productivity, viability security and acceptability. The following indicators were included: Shannon Diversity Index, Depth of Topsoil, Soil Organic Matter, Soil Nitrate, Crop Yields, Net Income, Trend in Income and Harvest Loss, Farmer Traits, Farm Characteristics and Farmer perceptions on the influence of farming on the health of natural resources and of the farm workers. The methodological framework also includes a range of methods and techniques for gathering environmental, economic and social data in the uplands and indicates circumstances under which each might best be utilized. Using the methodological framework, agricultural land use in an upland area in Liliw, Laguna Philippines was evaluated for protection of natural resources, specifically of the soil quality and for farm productivity and for the social factors that influence the way agricultural lands are managed. Results showed integration of horticultural trees and crops have potential for protecting thickness of the topsoil, reducing nutrient wastage and is more economically profitable than monocropping systems. Specifically, coconut exhibited importance in maintaining thickness of topsoil while lanzones played major role in augmenting farm income and as buffer to income losses from annual crops. Older farmers and women were found associated with agricultural land use with diversified production in the case study area. The Logit model analysis further showed that leadership quality and land ownership are the social factors that will likely influence integration of horticultural trees and crops in the uplands. Other personal characteristics like years of experience in farming, access to other sources of livelihood, land size, awareness of land degradation and effect of agrochemicals on heath of the farm workers have no likely influence on agricultural lands with integration of horticultural trees and crops. SWOT analysis of agricultural land use in the case study site showed that despite the environmental and economic advantages of agricultural lands with diversified production, there are weaknesses and barriers to its further development and implementation. From this assessment, implications for developing and implementing an ABDE intervention program for the tropical uplands were drawn.

This thesis undertakes a reformulation of ELT curricula by means of a
critique of established theoretical models and a case study of the ELT
curriculum at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila.
The thesis proceeds in accordance with the precise that a sound
theoretical and philosophical perspective is crucial to any task of
curriculum development and criticism and thus derives a theoretical/
philosophical perspective from a consideration of ELT in the context of
the philosophy of education and linguistic, applied linguistic,
sociolinguistic, learning and curriculum theories.
The argument is presented that any model of language as communication
derived from linguistics and applied linguistics is not amenable to
translation into descriptive rules of 'use' and hence a pedagogic grammar.
Such theoretical perspectives, in only deriving partial models of 'use',
are largely inadequate in the context of a concern with language teaching.
Input from cognitive learning theory however suggests that teaching
language as communication requires a curriculum approach focusing on
'open' communicative procedures rather than systematic techniques premised
on language description and exemplified by a syllabus-based structure. It
is thus argued that communicative language teaching requires 'open',
methodology-based procedures that provide a markedly subordinated role for
syllabus. The advocated form of communicative language curriculum is thus
described as employing an 'open' rather than a 'closed-system') approach.
It is also maintained that the ELT debate on communicative curricula has
largely ignored crucial issues in curriculum theory and the philosophy of
education - especially the distinction between 'education' and 'training'.
This theoretical debate enables the derivation of a revised taxonomy of
language curricula to replace the orthodox dichotomy into General English
and ESP. The argument is presented that there are essentially two
approaches to the curriculum - closed-system and open approaches - and
that within each approach there are two curriculum types. Through revised
definitions, the intents of 6E and ESP curricula are distinguished and a
new taxonomy of four possible curriculum types, including that of a
Focused English Learning (FED curriculum, presented.
The principles derived from the theoretical discussion and reformulated
taxonomy enable an 'illuminative' case study investigation of an example
curriculum: the ostensibly English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum
for Engineers employed at DLSU. This case study, by examining curriculum
justification and intent and illuminating the nature of the problem at the
university, illustrates, by example, aspects of the reformulated taxonomy.
The case study findings detail crucial aspects of the interface between
theory and local practice and expose the curriculum at DLSU as inherently
contradictory, based on an inaccurate notion of ESP, and principally
concerned with the pursuit of broadly educational aims through a mainly
training-based, closed-system and non-communicative curriculum.
The thesis concludes by proposing that the orthodox dichotomy between GE
and ESP curricula is inappropriate and fails to reflect the various and
possible forms of curricular intent. This has been a consequence of a
theoretical emphasis on linguistics and sociolinguistics and an inadequate
consideration of the philosophy of education and learning and curriculum
theories. The inadequacy of the established dichotomy has led to
confusion in application (as demonstrated through the case study) that
could be avoided through the adoption of the reformulated taxonomy.

Rodents cause significant damage to agricultural crops throughout the world, including rice, the staple food for the increasing population of Southeast Asia. Little is known about the ecology of pest rodent species, resulting in much effort being concentrated on ineffective, time consuming control practices. This research was designed to understand the demography and habitat use of the major pest rodent (Rattus tanezumi) of the Banaue rice terraces in order to identify the most efficient time and location to undertake pest control. Rodent crop damage and associated yield loss was also assessed in order to provide information for a cost : benefit analysis of rodent control practices. And the beliefs, perceptions and practices of Banaue rice farmers were investigated to assist in identifying future compatible rodent control programs. Replicated cage trapping was undertaken for a twelve month period over the entire rice cropping season in two study sites in the Municipality of Banaue Philippines. The breeding season of R. tanezumi corresponded with periods of food availability from the transplanted to ripening stages of the rice crop. A non-breeding season occurred from the fallow to seedling stages. The distinct breeding season occurred within the rice fields and adjacent village and scrub habitats. Radio-tracked and spool-and-line tracked R. tanezumi moved from adjacent habitats into the rice field during the breeding season, and individuals persisted in all habitat types, including the rice field, during the fallow, nonbreeding season. Overall rice yield was significantly greater (43%) in areas where rodents were excluded by fencing compared to areas where rodents were not excluded. More rodent damage to rice tillers occurred at the booting than at the ripening stage of the rice crop. These results suggest that to prevent rodent damage, control should be undertaken at the end of the R. tanezumi non-breeding season (prior to transplanting), before rodent numbers multiply and crop damage occurs. Further, the cost-benefit analysis of non-chemical rodent control programs in Banaue, suggests that benefits accrue once yield loss is likely to exceed 5%.

In the global transfer of social reproduction, hierarchies of women are maintained, based on intersectional power structures such as ethnicity, race, nationality, age, and class. But the stand-in women in the three-tier transfer of reproductive labour, or global care chain, do not always occupy one single position, but actually shift in time and place between ‘the middle’ and ‘the bottom’ of the hierarchy. Regardless of location, Filipina women remain under the burden of their gendered duties and whether working abroad as domestic workers or acting as local stand-ins, they have to take on both local and global social reproductive work. They become the breadwinner in their families, at the same time as they are ascribed natural responsibility for households and families, as wives, mothers and stand-ins ‘at home’.</p>
