Thesis (Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / Gas turbines have achieved widespread popularity in industrial fields. This is due to the high power, reliability, high efficiency, and its use of cheap gas as fuel. However, a major draw-back of gas turbines is due to the strong function of ambient air temperature with its output power. With every degree rise in temperature, the power output drops between 0.54 and 0.9 percent. This loss in power poses a significant problem for utilities, power suppliers, and co-generations, especially during the hot seasons when electric power demand and ambient temperatures are high. One way to overcome this drop in output power is to cool the inlet air temperature. There are many different commercially available means to provide turbine inlet cooling. This disserta-tion reviews the various technologies of inlet air cooling with a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art of inlet fogging systems. In this technique, water vapour is being used for the cooling purposes. Therefore, the water quality requirements have been considered in this thesis. The fog water is generally demin-eralized through a process of Reverse Osmosis (RO). The drawback of fogging is that it re-quires large amounts of demineralized water. The challenge confronting operators using the fogging system in remote locations is the water scarcity or poor water quality availability. However, in isolated hot areas with high levels of radiation making use of solar PV energy to supply inlet cooling system power requirements is a sustainable approach. The proposed work herein is on the development of a photovoltaic (PV) application for driv-ing the fogging system. The design considered for improved generation of Acaica power plant in Cape Town, South Africa. In addition, this work intends to provide technical infor-mation and requirements of the fogging system design to achieve additional power output gains for the selected power plant.

Analysis of a Fresnel concentrating spectral divider for a photovoltaic system

To improve photovoltaic system efficiencies, concentrating spectral dividers are used to separate solar light, and to focus each spectral portion onto photovoltaic cells of matching spectral response. In this investigation, an optical analysis is developed to study the feasibility for use of a Fresnel half-lens as a concentrating spectral divider. To facilitate the analysis, an existing curved-base linear Fresnel lens ray-trace model has been modified and expanded. Solar limb-darkening has been incorporated into the theory by means of a digitized sun model. The lens model allows for variation of lens geometrical characteristics. Transmission losses due to Fresnel reflection and bulk absorption are taken into account. The distribution of the concentrated solar flux in the lens image plane is modeled such that spectral regions may be examined separately. Concentration ratio profiles are used to derive and evaluate a quantity of spectral separation.A computer program has been used to generate data, based on the theoretical model, for example lenses. The spectral separation, transmission and concentration properties for each example lens have been systematically studied with respect to lens geometry. The effects of solar limb-darkening are determined by comparison with the data from a model that assumes a uniform solar source. Adventures in main group chemistry: from molecules to materials

Three synthetic methods have been explored for the preparation of several novel boron-substituted amidinates and guanidinates. The extension of heterocumulene insertion chemistries to boron-aryl, boron-metallocene and boron-transition metal moieties has also been achieved and the mechanism of such insertions is addressed via density functional theory modeling techniques. The reactivity of these complexes is also explored, mainly through halide abstraction methodologies to generate boron cations, which are potent Lewis Acids and may be useful in promoting organic transformations or in the polymerization of ethylene. The synthesis and characterization of the elusive monomeric low valent carbenoid boron(I), a compound with a formal lone pair located upon the boron center, has been lacking. The suitability of the guanidinate ligand system to support such a species is also discussed and a combined experimental and theoretical approach to this highly topical problem is also presented. Thirdly, the use of photovoltaics (devices which convert solar energy directly into electricity) as an alternative source of energy outwith fossil fuel technologies is a rapidly growing area of interest. Initial efforts to use a novel approach, which incorporates inorganic nanocrystals wired into a conducting polymer matrix, are also presented. Successful synthetic approaches to the gallium, aluminum and indium monomeric precursors suitable for electropolymerization were developed. These compounds proved to be effective starting points for the generation of conducting polymers with embedded III/VI (Ga₂S₃) nanocrystals with further studies currently underway as to their III/V (InP, GaAs) compatriots. Finally, a retrospective of projects that may best be described in terms of the moniker "Loose Ends and Future Directions" will be presented. The aim of which will be to serve as a useful guidepost for further studies in the fields and topics discussed. / text
