Experiences of violence among with physical disabilities living in Tshwane Metro, PretoriaMuruzi, Yeukai Leoba January 2021 (has links)
Violence against women is a widespread challenge is various communities. Literature reveal that women with disabilities specifically are at an elevated risk of experiencing different types of violence and they experience violence more than women without disabilities or men with disabilities. More so, they are faced with violence unique to them known as disability related violence. As such, the goal of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of violence among women with physical disabilities in Tshwane Metro, Pretoria. The study was based on a qualitative approach to research and it was applied in nature. Using an instrumental case study design, a sample of twelve women was selected using purposive sampling method. Data was collected using face to face and virtual interviews guided by a semi-structured interview schedule. The data was thematically analysed.
The empirical findings of the study indicated that the participants experienced various forms of violence such as sexual, financial, physical, emotional, structural violence as well as neglect and deprivation. As found in this study, there were two risk factors that increased the possibility of the participants experiencing violence. These included, assumptions allied to women with physical disabilities and not disclosing the violence experienced. Nevertheless, the participants had ways of protecting themselves from violence highlighted as protective factors, which included self-acceptance, disclosing violence and getting support from significant others. Further, the participants coped in different ways after they experienced violence. They relied on support from informal networks, professionals and also by being empowered. The participants suggested that social workers ought to intervene within the responsible families of women affected with violence, carry out sensitive interventions and enhance the dignity of women with physical disabilities experiencing violence.
The study concluded that women with physical disabilities are not an exception to violence as they are faced with multiple forms of violence and disability related violence unique to them. Based on the conclusion, it is therefore recommended that there is a need for facilitation of public awareness on violence experienced by women with physical disabilities. Further, there should be capacity building for social workers, and assessment of the families of women with physical disabilities experiencing violence for holistic effective interventions. Intervention programmes or services for people faced with violence should not discriminate against women with physical disabilities, and a multi-sectoral approach can be used to help in addressing violence as it occurs in different environments such as public places, family contexts, schools, health care centres and work places / Dissertation (MSW (Research))--University of Pretoria, 2021. / Social Work and Criminology / MSW (Research) / Unrestricted

Searching for Inclusion: The Impact of Environmental Barriers on People with Physical DisabilitiesCoate, Angela Y 01 June 2014 (has links)
People with physical disabilities face challenges each day when trying to navigate a world filled with environmental and architectural barriers. Research indicates that environmental barriers isolate and prevent many people with physical disabilities from accessing and participating in the community and society. This research study directly applied quantifiable investigative methods through the dissemination of anonymous, online surveys that obtained a total of 363 participants who met the requirements of being between the ages of 18 and 65, and who have a medically diagnosed physical disability in order to identify key factors leading to the isolation among physically disabled persons. This study also discovers a relationship between environmental barriers and isolation among people with physical disabilities, and effectively establishes that the majority of participants identified environmental barriers as being the leading cause of their isolation and exclusion from society. Moreover, research acquired through this study uncovers the previously concealed realization that many individuals do not feel there is an effort being made to ensure that buildings and environments are accessible for people with physical disabilities; and further examines the colossal need for advocacy and change within ADA guidelines to create a more acceptable and adaptable solution for reducing or eliminating environmental and architectural barriers.

Depresijos, ją apibūdinančių rodiklių ir faktorių raiškos ypatumai judėjimo negalias patiriantiems asmenims / Depression, parameters characterizing factor expression and features, people who experience motor disabilityJurkevičiūtė, Kristina 10 September 2013 (has links)
Tyrimo objektas –judėjimo negalią patiriančių (JNP) asmenų depresijos ir jos rodiklių pasireiškimo lygmuo.
Temos aktualumas
Tikslas
Nustatyti depresijos pasireiškimo lygmenį judėjimo negalias turintiems (JNT)
asmenims, priklausomai nuo neįgalumo lygio, demografinių faktorių ir kognityvinio bei somatinio depresijos faktorių pasireiškimo lygio... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The object of research - disability movement facing (JNP) people for depression and its indicators, the level of manifestation.
Relevance
Predisposition to anxiety, depression, characterized by the disabled and non-disabled people. The expression conditions may vary, it depends on the person's age, the type and level of impairment, but in all cases related to personal mental health. Persons with disabilities that were not intellectual disabilities are at greater risk of experiencing depression and anxiety. These are people who can not manifested not only as a specific clinic will not, but it is associated with a variety of mental experiences (Gogaitis, 2001). Now there are enough deals to people with disabilities, is being investigated, written articles, methodological literature, which formed a good enough education, social and medical rehabilitation and social integration in the public system. However, studies on the movement of Lithuania disabled people prone to depression and anxiety, we did not find any. Also, reading foreign authors to read the studies lost article, which provides an analysis of the movement of people with disabilities depression dependence on cognitive and somatic indicators. Therefore, research in this area is a highly topical and new because of a lack of scientific articles on the subject.
Goal
Set the level of depression onset with motor impairments(MI) individuals, depending on the degree of disability, demographic factors and cognitive and somatic... [to full text]

Psychological wellbeing of adolescents with physical disabilities in inclusive community settingsMpofu, Jabulani January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological wellbeing of adolescents with physical disabilities living in inclusive community settings in Zimbabwe. An inclusive community is one that aims to remove exclusionary practice within the community and promote community's systems that accept all people, regardless of their differences. A constructivist lived experience perspective underpinned this research, in which the researcher used multiple case studies to interact with the participants about their inclusion and psychological wellbeing as adolescents with physical disabilities. The 14 participants (nine males and five females) were purposively sampled. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews.
Four themes emerged from the inductive thematic analysis of data sources. It was found that participants in this study were involved in various inclusive community activities available within their communities. The study also found that parent, the government, the community and donor communities were working together towards improving the lives of adolescents with physical disabilities in the communities in which they live. These stakeholders assumed different roles, such as providing disability awareness education, vocational counselling, and inclusive infrastructure and resources. The study also found that the participants encountered environmental restrictions in choosing inclusion activities in which to participate in their communities.
The findings of this study have the potential to help the policy makers and researchers in inclusive communities to better understand the needs of adolescents with physical disabilities living in these communities. Furthermore, the current research has the potential to guide future research and develop future initiatives to improve the psychological wellbeing of adolescents with physical disabilities, thus improving their outcomes and quality of life. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Educational Psychology / PhD / Unrestricted

Perceptions of the Physically Disabled Influenced by Media PortrayalsParcell, Jessica 02 April 2021 (has links)
Using a quantitative coding method, the current study analyzed cinematic productions between the years 1989 and 2019 (N = 79) for presence of supercrip and victim stereotypes among portrayals of the physically disabled. A series of One-way ANOVA - Bonferonni and Bivariate Correlation tests were performed, and results indicated that while negative and supercrip stereotypes of the physically disabled have decreased over this 30-year period, simultaneously, very positive and victim stereotypes have risen. Results showed negative (F = 3.215, p = .046) portrayals decreased over time, but that simultaneously victim (F = 8.044, p = .001) and very positive (F = 3.43, p = .037) portrayals rose. For supercrip the results were not significant. Significance was found in neutral portrayals in the 90s (M = 0.48) and both the 00s (M = 0.77) and the 10s (M = 0.88). This indicated a notable increase in the number of neutral portrayals over time. Findings suggest that while there is some decrease in the number of negative and supercrip portrayals, portrayals seem to have shifted towards the other extreme with an increase in very positive and victim portrayals. Future research could examine what attitudes exist towards the physically disabled and how much media influenced the development of these attitudes. They could also look into how constructs of attitudes and subjective norms contribute to the perceptions of others towards the physically disabled, and how the "interactive process" impacts the development of these attitudes.

Explanatory Style and College Performance in Students with Physical DisabilitiesMartinez, Ramiro, 1964- 08 1900 (has links)
Seventy students (38 with physical disabilities and 32 without physical disabilities) were matched on age (a criterion of ± 4 years was used) and sex. Members of both groups, Persons With Physical Disabilities (PWPD) and those Persons Not Physically Disabled (PNPD), were asked to complete the University Services Inventory, Academic Goals Questionnaire, Academic Attributional Style Questionnaire (AASQ), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to determine how these variables were related to explanatory style (ES, as determined by AASQ scores). ES has its origins in the reformulated learned helplessness model (Abramson, Seligman, & Teasdale, 1978). According to this model, individuals who made attributions that were internal-stable-global (pessimistic ES) were more likely to experience mood and behavior deficits in the wake of bad events. The present study examined college achievement (GPA), utilization of university services, goal specificity, goal efficacy, and responses to academic setbacks, as these variables were related to ES. Additionally, ES scores were examined with regards to differences in gender and disability status (both between different disability groups and between individuals with and without physical disabilities).

Differences in Attitudes Towards People with Disabilities: Examining the Effects of the Presence of an Assistance DogColeman, Jennifer A 05 November 2013 (has links)
Individuals with disabilities face various types of social stigma. Research suggests that the presence of an assistance dog leads to an increase in social interactions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether people’s attitudes toward individuals with disabilities differ when pairing that person with an assistance dog. Undergraduate students (N= 244) were randomly assigned to view an individual with a disability either alone or with an assistance dog. Participants rated their attitudes toward the individual, completed a newly developed Implicit Association Test, and answered behavioral intention questions. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that individuals with more positives attitudes toward dogs had significantly more positive social attitudes toward the individual with a disability paired with a dog, after accounting for gender and dog ownership history. Additionally, individuals had an implicit bias toward an individual with a disability paired with an assistance dog over the individual alone.
