Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Understanding the responses of individual plant communities to variations in near-surface water levels and to water quality is a step towards determining the critical or important factors applicable to a Rapid Wetland Assessment System. This thesis describes and discusses factors associated with wetland plant communities, with an attempt to predict changes in a wetland system. This study was initiated with a primary aim of establishing the relationship between plant communities and the variation in near-surface water levels in areas occupied by various plant communities in the Middelvlei wetland system at Stellenbosch. A second aim was to assess whether water quality had an influence on the plant communities. Seven plant communities are identified and described from this particular wetland system using standard Braun-Blanquet techniques (Typha capensis Reedswamp; Cyperus textilis Sedgeland; Pennisetum macrourum Grassland; Juncus effusus Sedgeland; Cyperus longus Sedgeland; Cliffortia strobilifera Shrubland and Populus canescens Forest). The Typha capensis Reedswamp community is found in the wettest parts of the wetlands, with a fluctuation in water table from 0.10 m above surface during the wet season to 0.43 m below surface during the dry season. The Populus canescens Forest is actively invading the wetland replacing the wetland species by modifying the wetland hydrological condition. Water samples from 35 wells, collected on a monthly basis over 11 months, are used to assess sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, nitrate and phosphate, pH, redoxs potencial and dissolved oxygen levels in each community, over four seasons. Both multivariate analysis (ANOVA) and regression tree analysis (CART) are applied to evaluate differences between communities or groups of plant communities on a seasonal basis. Direct gradient analysis (CCA) is used to determine the relationship between plant communities and environmental variable gradients. A wide variation in water quality condition between plant communities is present. The Typha capensis Reedswamp community is associated with low nutrient levels (phosphates and nitrates) in all seasons. The Cyperus textilis Sedgeland is associated with low levels of nitrates and high phosphate levels. The Juncus effusus Sedgeland displays the highest phosphate concentration, occurring in summer, while low nitrate levels occur in this community during all the seasons. Dissolved oxygen in the near-surface water in this wetland is at very low concentrations, and has no significant difference between communities. It plays no major role in determining the occurrence and distribution of the plant communities. Most of the water chemical constituents measured in this study are the result of multiple complex relationships, with constituent variations occurring differently between communities. A remarkable seasonal distinction in the chemical constituents in different communities is present. Despite the complex nature of the relationships between plant communities and environmental factors, the low species diversity levels through the tendency for single species dominance and the strong association of these communities with particular environmental variables, the combination of these factors all add value to the use of wetland vegetation as a good tool to indicate wetland condition. An effort to understand wetland plant communities in relation to determining environmental factors would promote the use of plant communities as user-friendly tools for wetland monitoring and assessment. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Om die reaksies van plantgemeenskappe teenoor variasies in naby-oppervlakte watervlakke te verstaan, is die eerste krities-belangrike faktor die ontwikkeling van ‘n sisteem om vleilande vinnig te assesseer. Hierdie studie se basiese mikpunt is om verwantskappe te soek tussen plantgemeenskappe in die Middelvlei Vleilandsisteem en wisseling in naby-oppervlak watervlakke. ‘n Sekondêre doel is om te bepaal of daar enige korrelasie is tussen waterkwaliteit en die plantgemeenskappe teenwoordig in die vleiland. Sewe plantgemeenskappe is in hierdie vleilandsisteem geïdentifiseer en beskryf deur gebruik te maak van standaard Braun-Blanquet tegnieke, naamlik die Typha capensis Rietmoeras; Cyperus textilis Biesieveld; Pennisetum macrourum Grasveld; Juncus effusus Biesieveld; Cyperus longus Biesieveld; Cliffortia strobilifera Struikveld en ‘n Populus canescens Woud. Direkte Gradiëntanalise (CCA) is gebruik om die verwantskap tussen plantgemeenskappe en gradiënte van omgewingsveranderlikes te bepaal. Groot variasies in waterkwaliteit tussen plantgemeenskappe is waargeneem. Die Typha capensis Rietmoeras-gemeenskap is geassosieer met lae voedingstofvlakke (veral van fosfate en nitrate) in alle seisoene. Die Cyperus textilis Biesieveld-gemeenskap is geassosieer met lae nitraat- en hoë fosfaatvlakke. Die Juncus effusus Biesieveldgemeenskap vertoon die hoogste fosfaatvlakke, tydens die die somermaande, terwyl die nitraatvlakke deur al die seisoene ook laag bly. Effects of fire on seedling establishment in upland prairies in the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Prior to European settlement, native prairie dominated the landscape of the Willamette Valley. Today, due to urbanization, agriculture, and the cessation of burning, only isolated remnants of these grasslands still exist. In response to conservation concerns, there has been a move to restore the remaining prairies in the Willamette Valley, and prescribed burning and sowing native seed are often top candidates for grassland restoration. However, the effects of burning on native seedling establishment and the spread of weedy exotics are largely unknown. In this study, I investigated how prescribed burning affects native and exotic species seedling establishment on three upland prairie vegetation types in the Willamette Valley. The general approach was to sow a known number of seeds from several native and exotic grassland species into experimentally manipulated plots, designed to separate the effects of litter removal from the other effects of burning, and to monitor seedling densities. Germinability and dormancy characteristics of the sowed seeds were also addressed. An additional study focused on the fire temperatures at soil surface in three grassland vegetation types and two burn sizes. Burning increased the establishment of most or all of the sown native species in the two low quality, exotic grass sites. Exotic seedling establishment also tended to increase, but did not differ significantly from unburned plots for most species tested. On the higher quality, native bunchgrass site, burning did not significantly improve native species establishment, but did significantly increase the establishment of short-lived exotic species over those in unburned plots. The germination and dormancy characteristics of the native and exotic species tested indicate that grasses, both native and exotic, are more likely than forbs to be non-dormant in the autumn following dispersal. Forbs, especially native forbs tend to require cold-stratification for maximum germinability. During grassland fire, temperatures at soil surface were relatively cool. Fire temperature intensity was highest in the higher quality native bunchgrass vegetation. These burns reached higher temperatures significantly closer to the soil surface than the plot burns in lower quality sites dominated by annual or perennial exotic grasses. Average temperatures in a two hectare broadcast burn and in replicated 2m x 2.5m plot bums in an annual exotic grassland were very similar. Prescribed burning can be an excellent tool for the restoration of low-quality upland prairies when combined with sowing native seeds in the fall. However, on high-quality prairie, prescribed burning may be a poor restoration choice for promoting native seedlings, as burning promoted weedy species without enhancing native seedling establishment. / Graduation date: 1997

The ecology of naturalised silvergrass (Vulpia) populations in south-western Australia

[Truncated abstract] Annual grasses have colonised a diverse range of environments in southern Australia. The “Silvergrasses” of the genus Vulpia are excellent examples being widely distributed, are prevalent weeds of agriculture and have had a long history to naturalise on the continent. Research was undertaken on Vulpia populations to identify if naturalising species have reproductive traits that provide propagules with the best chances of success. Furthermore, research aimed at investigating if these traits vary between species and their populations and how this variability related to the environment. A herbarium and field study was undertaken to establish what Vulpia species occur in SW Australia and to investigate environmental factors affecting their distribution. 169 herbaria specimens was examined and a botanical field survey of 189 sites was carried out in September 1998. Four species occur in the region: V. fasciculata, V. muralis, V. bromoides and two variants of V. myuros (V. myuros var. megalura and V. myuros var. myuros). V. bromoides and V. myuros were introduced early into the region while V. fasciculata and V. muralis more recently. It is plausible that Vulpia invaded the region via early seaport settlements and was spread by agricultural expansion. 96% of field sites contained V. myuros var. myuros, 79% V. myuros var. megalura, 50% V. bromoides, 6% V. fasciculata and 6% contained V. muralis. 90% of sites contained a mix of species and 9% of sites contained pure species stands. V. myuros var. myuros is the most widespread species and dominant form of V. myuros. It is found from high rainfall regions through to arid locations occurring on mostly light textured low fertility soils. V. muralis and V. fasciculata occur infrequently with the former widely dispersed and the later occurring predominantly on sands. V. bromoides occurs extensively in high rainfall regions but rarely extends to locations receiving less than 400-450mm annual rainfall and northward above 30°00’ latitude. It is predominantly on light to loamy textured soils that are fertile and acid. The most common species V. myuros and V. bromoides often coexist within sites but the dominance of one over the other is strongly correlated with growing season length and false break frequency. V. bromoides is positively correlated to growing season length and V. myuros is negatively related. The distribution of Vulpia species is strongly influenced by climate and soils. Variability in distribution is a reflection of the ecological differentiation between species to colonise different environments

This tesis are about the mutual relation between the woody plants and the city public space, more precisely between the architectural composition and its elements. Woody plants, particulalry the trees,are under the same aesthetical rules as all the other elements of the public space, but at the same time are the living organisms, that are under the rules of nature. The thesis present five thematic groups of information, thats are necessary to know for the design of the woody plants in the city public space. On the base of this information the thesis review the streets and the squares of the city Brno and prove no contradiction between the aesthetical rules and the rules of nature. Contrarily, they support each other. It proves, that the high quality city space with the woody plants, is possible to create only with the knowledge of the both rules and their aplications.

Green Mind Gray Yard: Micro Scale Assessment of Ecosystem Services

There is a spatial mismatch between the size of the area where people are living and the extent of land needed to ecologically support developed areas. More people are living in urban areas than any time in history, and the resources need to support cities have had to expand to try and meet the demands of increasing urban populations. However, areas of opportunity exist for urban areas to begin to positively contribute towards the available resources in a region. Because a large portion of urban areas is within private control, gaining a baseline understanding of how residents interact with ecosystem services served as basis of this study. Using a survey of residents in the Portland, OR area, correlations between demographic groups and questions regarding their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors as they relate to vegetation proved that the knowledge of environmental relationships is an important first step in creating pro-environmental behavior. Those reporting a high level of knowledge for ecological system and processes were more likely to value the benefits of vegetation for other associated reasons, such as for recreational activities, aesthetic purposes, and air or water quality. Additionally, survey responses were mapped to spatial data to gain an understanding of the spatial characteristics of neighborhoods in the survey area and how they have changed over time. Overall, the results in the study display trends that can help outreach organizations and municipalities to determine plans to strategically engage the public in a way that could create a net gain in urban ecosystem services.

Understory Diversity and Succession on Coarse Woody Debris in a Coastal, Old-growth Forest, Oregon

This research examines the relationship between understory plant diversity and logs in a Pacific Northwest (PNW) Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis)-western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) old-growth, coastal forest. These forests are renowned for their high forest productivity, frequent wind storms, and slow log decomposition rates that produce unmatched accumulations of coarse woody debris (CWD) yet few studies have examined the relationship between CWD and understory vegetation ecology. My research addressed this topic by comparing understory plant census data between paired fallen log and forest floor sites (n=20 pairs). My objectives were to: 1) determine the influence of substrate type on community composition and diversity, and 2) examine successional pathways and species assemblage patterns on CWD in various stages of decomposition. To meet these objectives I employed non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinations and unsupervised cluster analyses to identify and compare community assemblages on both substrates. These methods revealed similar species diversity and evenness between log and forest floor sites with compositional differences within and between substrates corresponding to habitat availability for colonization and light and moisture gradients. My results also suggest understory successional pathways related to decay class and characterized by an initial abundance of bryophytes, forbs, and seedlings followed by woody shrubs. Understory communities developing on logs also experienced increasing diversity, evenness, and divergence from forest floor communities consistent with log decomposition. These results differ from findings for boreal forests that reveal increasing similarity between substrate communities with increasing decay class. Recommendations for future research include the employment of a more robust sample size and direct measurements of environmental variables. Additional comparator studies are also needed to confirm the effects of forest type and decomposition on the relationship between CWD and forest understory communities. This study demonstrates how fine-scale wind disturbance fosters biodiversity through the creation of CWD substrate. My results and future research are essential for the development of silvicultural models designed to promote biodiversity in PNW coastal forests.

The influence of biophysical feedbacks and species interactions on grass invasions and coastal dune morphology in the Pacific Northwest, USA

Biological invasions provide a unique opportunity to study the mechanisms that regulate community composition and ecosystem function. Invasive species that are also ecosystem engineers can substantially alter physical features in an environment, and this can lead to cascading effects on the biological community. Aquatic-terrestrial interface ecosystems are excellent systems to study the interactions among invasive ecosystem engineers, physical features, and biological communities, because interactions among vegetation, sediment, and fluids within biophysical feedbacks create and modify distinct physical features. Further, these systems provide important ecosystem services including coastal protection afforded by their natural features. In this dissertation, I investigate the interactions and feedbacks among sand-binding beach grass species (a native, Elymus mollis (Trin.), and two non-natives, Ammophila arenaria (L.) Link and A. breviligulata Fernald), sediment supply, and dune shape along the U.S. Pacific Northwest coast. Dunes dominated by A. arenaria tend to be taller and narrower compared to the shorter, wider dunes dominated by A. breviligulata. These patterns suggest an ecological control on dune shape, and thus, coastal vulnerability to overtopping waves. I investigate the causes and consequences of these patterns with experiments, field observations, and modeling. Specifically, I investigate the relative roles of vegetation and sediment supply in shaping coastal dunes over inter-annual and multi-decadal time scales (Chapter 2), characterize a biophysical feedback between beach grass species growth habit and sediment supply (Chapter 3), uncover the mechanisms leading to beach grass coexistence and whether A. breviligulata can invade and dominate new sections of coastline (Chapter 4), and examine the non-target effects resulting from management actions that remove Ammophila for the recovery of the threatened Western Snowy plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) (Chapter 5). I found that vegetation and sediment supply play important roles in dune shape changes across inter-annual and multi-decadal time scales (Chapter 2). I determined that a biophysical feedback between the beach grass growth habits and sediment supply results in species-specific differences in sand capture ability, and thus, is a likely explanation for differences in dune shape (Chapter 3). I found that all three beach grass species can coexist across different sediment deposition rates, and that this coexistence is largely mediated by positive direct and indirect species interactions. I further determined that A. breviligulata is capable of invading and dominating the beach grass community in regions where it is currently absent (Chapter 4). Combined, these findings indicate that A. breviligulata is an inferior dune building species as compared to A. arenaria, and suggest that in combination with sediment supply gradients, these species differences ultimately lead to differences in dune shape. Potential further invasions of A. breviligulata into southern regions of the Pacific Northwest may diminish the coastal protection ability of dunes currently dominated by A. arenaria, but this effect could be moderated by the predicted near co-dominance of A. arenaria in these lower sediment supply conditions. Finally, I found that the techniques used to remove Ammophila for plover recovery have unintended consequences for the native and endemic dune plant communities, and disrupt the natural disturbance regime of shifting sand. A whole-ecosystem restoration focus would be an improvement over the target-species approach, as it would promote the return of the natural disturbance regime, which in turn, would help recover the native biological community. The findings from this dissertation research provide a robust knowledge base that can guide further investigations of biological and physical changes to the coastal dunes, can help improve the management of dune ecosystem services and the restoration of native communities, and can help anticipate the impacts of future beach grass invasions and climate change induced changes to the coast. / Graduation date: 2012 / Access restricted to the OSU Community at author's request from Sept. 22, 2011 - March 22, 2012

Influence of spatial and temporal factors on plants, pollinators and plant-pollinator interactions in montane meadows of the western Cascades Range

Montane meadows comprise less than 5% of the landscape of the western Cascades of Oregon, but they provide habitat for diverse species of plants and pollinators. Little is known about plant-pollinator network structure at these sites. This study quantified plant-pollinator interactions over the summer of 2011, based on six observations of 10 permanent subplots in 15 meadows, stratified by size and isolation. The study examined (1) relationships between richness and abundance of flowers, pollinators, and interactions; (2) distribution of abundance and richness of flowers, pollinators, and interactions with regards to surrounding meadow habitat; (3) change in flower and pollinator abundance over the season; (4) factors associated with the presence of various guilds of pollinators; and (5) the structure of plant-pollinator networks. The study showed that (1) richness of pollinators increased 2x faster than richness of flowers with increased abundance; (2) density of flowers and interactions was positively correlated with meadow size and diversity of pollinators and interactions were both correlated with surrounding habitat at two spatial scales; (3) peak flower abundance coincided with or preceded peaks in pollinator populations; (4) abundance of three guilds of bees exhibited different patterns of association to surrounding habitat and meadow soil moisture corresponding to various dispersal potential and phenology of guild species; and (5) the number of network pairings for plants and pollinators increased with increasing species richness of potential interaction partners and all networks were found to be significantly nested. Results of this study indicate that plant-pollinator networks are complex assemblages of species, in which spatial and temporal patterns of habitat affect species composition and network structure. In particular, flower and pollinator abundance and richness are depressed in small and isolated meadows. The effects of dune stabilization on the spatiotemporal distribution of soil moisture resources, Northern Great Plains, Canada

In dryland environments, the availability of soil moisture is the primary control on plant species’ distributions. In the sandhill regions of the northern Great Plains, vegetation establishment has transformed highly mobile, desert-like dune fields into stabilized landscapes covered by mixed-grassland prairie. This study examines how dune stabilization has modified the spatiotemporal distribution of soil moisture resources. An ergodic (space-for-time) approach was used, comparing soil moisture dynamics on active and vegetation-stabilized dunes in the Bigstick Sand Hills of southwestern Saskatchewan. Results indicate that while dune stabilization has enhanced near-surface soil moisture availability, deeper profile soil moisture recharge is reduced. Through better understanding how vegetation has modified soil moisture dynamics in stabilizing sandhill regions, better management practices may be implemented to maintain water resource availability and ecosystem health. / xii, 97 leaves : ill., maps ; 29 cm
