Continuous Production of Carbon Nanotubes Using Carbon Arc Reactor : Anode Surface Temperature Study and CFD Modelling.

Yusoff, Hamdan bin Mohamed January 2008 (has links)
The mass production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by a cost effective process is still a challenge for further research and application of CNTs. This research focussed on the deposition of CNTs on a continuously-fed carbon substrate via arc discharge at atmospheric pressure. In this work, modifications, control and optimization of the available arc-discharge reactor were conducted. New reactor support and new tape feeding mechanisms were added to the reactor for better temperature assessment, longer operating period and better control of the speed of the tape. The influence of inter-electrode gap, substrate velocity and arc current on the surface temperature were investigated. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were produced at lower currents (< 20 A) and at larger inter-electrode gaps. Further investigation shows that inter-electrode gap influenced both the arc characteristic and the anode surface temperature (Ts). Here, Ts was measured by an optical pyrometer. The inter-electrode gap was found to indirectly affect the formation of NTs. Anode surface temperature (Ts) varied with gap, reaching a minimum at an intermediate gap. Higher CNTs yield was found at this lowest Ts. This minimum Ts is consistent with the presence of a cloud of nanoparticles ejected by the heated graphite/carbon surfaces. These graphene fragments are thought to later fold and form nanotube “seeds” and then develop into multiwall nanotubes. This cloud of nanoparticles also may affect the electrical conductivity at the front of the anode. Simulation of the arc behaviour, i.e. temperature distributions and flow properties of the plasma, using a computer package Comsol Multiphysics 3.2, was stable only when the electrical conductivity of a dusty plasma near to the electrodes was included. Our experiments show that carbon nanotubes grew better at a Ts range of ~ 3650 K - 3700 K and at the tape speed of 3 mm/s. The results from our work also strongly suggested that tiny carbon crystallites are the main intermediates for CNT growth in an electric arc. The limiting factor for a solid state growth mechanism, therefore, is high temperature annealing of carbon or graphene fragments. Further work should aim to understand the growth mechanism of CNTs, produce comprehensive analysis on the arc plasma composition and also explore the possibility of producing CNTs at higher rates.

Plasma vertical position control in the COMPASS–D tokamak

Vyas, Parag January 1996 (has links)
The plasma vertical position system on the COMPASS–D tokamak is studied in this thesis. An analogue P+D controller is used to regulate the plasma vertical position which is open loop unstable. Measurements from inside the vessel are used for the derivative component of the control signal and external measurements for the proportional component. Two main sources of disturbances are observed on COMPASS–D. One source is 600Hz noise from thyristor power supplies which cause large oscillations at the control amplifier output. Another source is impulse–like disturbances due to ELMs (Edge Localized Modes) and this can occasionally lead to loss of control when the control amplifier saturates. Models of the plasma open loop dynamics were obtained using the process of system identification. Experimental data is used to fit the coefficients of a mathematical model. The frequency response of the model is strongly dependent on the shape of the plasma. The effect of shielding by the vessel wall on external measurements when compared with internal measurements is also observed. The models were used to predict values of gain margins and phase crossover frequencies which were found to be in good agreement with measured values. The harsh reactor conditions on the proposed ITER tokamak preclude the use of internal measurements. On COMPASS–D the stability margins of the loop decrease when using only external flux loops. High order controllers were designed to stabilize the system using only external measurements and to reduce the effect of 600Hz noise on the control amplifier voltage. The controllers were tested on COMPASS–D and demonstrated the improved performance of high order controllers over the simple P+D controller. ELMs cause impulse–like disturbances on the plasma position. The optimal controller minimizing the peak of the impulse response can be calculated analytically for COMPASS–D. A multiobjective controller which combines a small peak impulse response with robust stability and noise attenuation can be obtained using a numerical search.

Power absorption mechanisms and energy transfer in X-ray gas attenuators / Mécanisme d'absorption de puissance et transfert énergétique dans un atténuateur à gaz du rayonnement X

Martín Ortega, Álvaro 19 January 2017 (has links)
The work done in the context of this thesis focuses in the study of an X-ray gas attenuator and the plasma produced within. An X-ray gas attenuator consists on a vessel filled with gas, usually argon or krypton at a few hundreds millibars, that absorbs the low energy fraction of a synchrotron X-ray spectrum, reducing the power received by downstream optical elements without affecting the properties of the high energy part of the spectrum. The absorption of the photons creates a region of hot, ionized gas around the X-ray beam path, decreasing locally the gas density. A detailed energy balance between all the involved processes is required to be able to predict the absorption and operate and design gas attenuators efficiently. A hybrid model combining Monte Carlo and fluid modelling techniques has been developed to determine the energy balance and simulate the X-ray absorption. The model has been validated by experimental studies including power absorption, optical emission spectroscopy and tunable laser absorption spectroscopy. The results of both simulation and experiments show a plasma confined around the X-ray beam path, recombining in the bulk of the gas and with a maximum temperature of several hundreds of Kelvin. The model was able to predict the X-ray absorption within a 10-20% of error, which allows its use as a first approximation for the design and operation of gas attenuators, and also provides a starting point for more refined models.

Modélisation numérique instationnaire pour la simulation du soudage TIG avec couplage plasma / bain de fusion / Unsteady numerical simulation of GTA welding process with plasma / weld pool coupling

Yau, Xavier 15 February 2018 (has links)
In order to ensure total safety during maintenance operations within nuclear power plants, it is mandatory to preserve the optimal quality of the internal weld beads. To this end, we use Computational Magnetohydrodynamics to simulate adjacent phenomena within the plasma and the weld pool in order to improve the knowledge of welding operating process. One of the difficulties is to take into account the effects induced by the thermal gradient and the variations of surfactant element concentrations on the weld pool surface known as the Marangoni effect. In order to take into account all the physical phenomena at the plasma / weld pool interface, we use an interface tracking method (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) to improve the simulation of weld pool with free surfaces. Subsequently, it enables to capture more precisely the interfacial forces such as the Marangoni effect, the arc pressure and the gravity, and improve vertical welding simulation. Thus, this work is part of the development of a tridimensional unsteady two-way coupling in order to overcome the Gaussian boundary condition used to model the heat transfer from plasma torch towards the work piece surface. Ultimately, we could obtain an unified model for an optimal welding process simulation.
