Cross-cultural stories of race and change: a re-languaging of the public discourse on race and ethnicity

Unknown Date (has links)
A progressive discourse on race is impeded by several factors: debates on the reality or unreality of the term race itself; discussions of ethnicity that tend to marginalize a discussion of race; the view by majority members of society that race is a topic for discussion principally by minorities; and the lack of models for non-confrontational public conversations on the subject. In the process, a discussion of racial change rarely enters the discourse beyond brief responses in opinion polls. This study proposed the Race and Change Dialogue Model to facilitate the exploration of how race operates in society on an interpersonal level in everyday lives of people across cultures and how changes in racial attitudes occur over time. Theories of race and ethnicity, language, effective communication strategies, and social change provided a starting point, but a "re-languaging" approach was used to advance the innovative nature of this work. In audiorecorded oral histories for public dissemination and interviews in a documentary series on public television, cross-cultural narrators were provided with a safe rhetorical space to tell their stories and to be heard, and a framework of "racenicity" allowed for the discussion of the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, class, and culture as fused aspects of the same issue. An environment was created that enhanced effective communication of a difficult subject. Despite the challenges that arose in the patterns of talk about racial change, the door has been opened to bring change into the dialogue in a more prominent way that moves the discourse on differences in more productive directions. An alternate model for public discussions on race as "racenicity" was created that has the potential to build coalition in the U.S. and has implications for other societies as well. / by Eloise D. Trilling R's: meditations on immigration, assimilation, and language

Unknown Date (has links)
Immigration has become a hot button issue across the United States. Television newsmen dedicate hours of time to excoriate the "illegal invasion." I viewed the immigration debate as something not directly concerning me. I am a legal citizen of Hispanic descent. My mother is a naturalized citizen from Mexico. However, as the government conducted raids looking for illegal immigrants, my mother became more aware of her place as a Mexican woman living in the Midwest. She wondered whether people would assume she was illegal because of her accent and appearance. Our discussions prompted me to think about of my place in the story, and about my lack of connection with the Hispanic culture. I set out to interview migrants living in South Florida, and to document my and my mother's experience with immigration and assimilation. / by Shannon O'Brien. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Imagens de ciência na psicologia: um estudo preliminar / Images of science in psychology: a preliminary study

Rozados, Daniela 03 September 2010 (has links)
This paper investigates the relationship between psychology and science, specifically wich are the conceptions explicit and implicit that psychology have as science. Despite the diversity and richness of theories, the undeniable advances and theoretical and professional achievements from various scientific communities well established, there is still present in the area a malaise and uncertainty over its scientific status. Among the possible obstacles to the consolidation and broad recognition of psychology as a legitimate area of expertise and mature knowledge, we highlight two epistemological conditions that guided the discussion of its scientificity: at first, typical non suitability criteria of a normative science concept inspired by logical positivism; and in the second, the theoretical pluralism that mark it and does not meet a strong criterion of consensus and uniformity which, from the historically oriented epistemology of Thomas Kuhn, has become one of the possible references to acknowledge the scientificity and maturity of a theoretical field. The study, based on the concept of images of science, inspired mainly from the historiography of science proposed by Paolo Rossi, chooses as the object of analysis possible combinatorial games that are established between the ideas and discourses produced by the area, about which is considered to be science and the scientific criteria to be met. The research concludes how the scientific criteria and the images of science are dependent on the historiography of science, and that history from other scientific disciplines taken as ideal is much more pluralistic than is commonly supposed. It Concludes proposing that we can start from a broad and multifaceted concept of science to support and lead the discussion about the scientific status of psychology

Chinese American images in selected children's fiction for kindergarten through sixth grade

Chew, Laureen 01 January 1986 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate Chinese American images in selected children's fiction to determine whether or not data support the position of the Council on Interracial Books for Children, that the works of fiction studied tend to stereotype Chinese Americans. After reading the selected fifteen works of fiction, a criterion checklist was devised by the investigator to examine the behavior and lifestyle of Chinese Americans depicted in a variety of circumstances. validity of the criterion checklist was established by a panel of experts in the area of Chinese American studies. Inter-rater reliability was determined by two readers who utilized the criterion checklist to analyze the content of one lower elementary grade and one upper elementary grade work of fiction. Finally, the criterion checklist was used to analyze the fifteen works of fiction and draw conclusions related to the purpose of this study. The findings in this study do support the conclusions of the Council on Interracial Books for Children that this group of fiction portrays Chinese Americans in a one dimensional, stereotypic manner. In the checklist items related to environment, food, utensils, physical attributes, cultural celebrations, occupations, and recreation, Chinese Americans were portrayed as adhering to Chinese-specific characteristics. However, in cross-cultural and behavioral items, Chinese Americans were portrayed as desiring Western-specific characteristics. This tendency was especially prevalent in upper elementary grade fiction. A more integrative or multi-dimensional view of Chinese Americans appreciating, and able to function well in, both cultural contexts is disconcertingly absent. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made: 1. That teachers, librarians, and other school personnel who use this collection of books, supplement them with materials containing contemporary and realistic information about Chinese Americans. 2. That future writers of children's fiction dealing with Chinese Americans portray them in a multidimensional manner. 3. That curriculum writers of textbooks use a similar criterion checklist to offset the one-dimensionality of Chinese American images in existing children's literature. 4. That future writers of children's fiction on Chinese Americans utilize a criterion checklist such as the one in this study to assist them in developing multi-dimensional characters.
