In the context of semi-arid, where the mishandling of natural resources in the practice of agriculture has provoked environmental harm and loss of agricultural productivity in large expanses of land, those practices are seen as an additional alternative in reducing risks to native species, which justifies the realization of exploratory studies on the theme. In this perspective, this research has as main objective analyze the relationship between the use of pollinator-friendly practices and profitability of cashew culture Northeastern. The clipping was taken to cashew production in the states of Ceará, Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte. Were applied 162 questionnaires together cashew planters. The collected data were tabulated and quantitative analysis was made with the aid of descriptive statistics, construction aggregate index of adoption of practices friendly to pollinators, cluster analysis, profitability analysis of cashew culture, correlation analysis and regression analysis. The main results indicate that the majority of producers has low education and does not perform a proper handling of the orchard. Consequently, it can not get bigger gains from cashew culture, a fact observed by low average monthly income. Confirmed the presence of pollinator-friendly practices in cashew production of the three states surveyed, but to a small degree. Planters Cashew perceive the positive impacts of using such practices, but employ unconsciously, without the goal of direct benefit pollinators. The cashew culture northeastern showed to be profitable, but as adopting friendly practices is very low among growers of cashews was not observed a significant contribution between this variable and profitability. The results showed, however, that higher levels of adoption of practices friendly to pollinators can improve the profitability of cashew culture Northeastern, which allows inferences about the positive value of pollination to the activity and the importance of implementing these procedures in northeastern cashew culture.

Maeda, Jorge Mitiyo 11 August 1988 (has links)
An Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maid Seed Orchard located in Botucatu-SP, established to imoprove vigour stem form and resistance to stem canker was used to test the importance of in sects on pollination. The experimental design was composed of three stages: a) heterozygotic clone identification for albinism; b) insect populations survey present at flowering; c) quantification of insect role on E. grandis pollination. The number of heterozygotes for albinism were 6 out of 84 clones and 21 out of 217 grafts. Based on the frequency of albinitic seedlings the rate of natural selfing at the eeed orchard was estimated to be 5.57%, which was considered to be low and, therefore, an indicator that genetic variability is being efficiently maintained by insect pollination. The sistematic survey of insect populations showed 118 species captured by the end of the 4th day. Pollen load transport quantified by the "Neubauer" chamber, indentifyed 26 insect species as being E. grandis pollinators; among these, only 6 species were defined as important based on their frequencies and pollen loads. Apis mellifera contributed with 36.02% of the total number of insects at the Seed orchard and was responsable for 83.09% of the total pollen transported. Astylus variegatus was the second most important insect with 32.30% and 5.74% of frequency and pollen load respectively. Analysis of frequency data indicated a significant interaction (at α = 0.05) between periods and days of capture. Furthermore there were no differences: among places of insect sampling within the seed orchard, the interaction between places of insect sampling and periods of capture and the interaction between places of insect sampling and days. Therefore, it was concluded that pollination was uniform within the seed orchard in all periods and days. There was no significance between frequency and temperature of the periods for insect capture ; the same trend was observed between insect frequency and pollen loads which had a linear correlation coefficient of 0.76. To test the role of insect pollination for E. grandis 7 treatments involving 5 heterozygotic grafts associated with A. mellifera and A. variegatus or both were established to ensure selfing or cross pollination on exclusion cages with or without homozygotic clones. Seed of the above treatments showed that A. variegatus presented higler selfing rate (20.16%), when homozygotic clones were absent white the no caging treatment showed a lower selfing rate (1.24%). The lowest rate of selfing (0.8%) was obtained with caging of A. mellifera and homozygotic grafts. This value indicates that A. mellifera was the most important insect for E. grandis seed orchard in respect to frequency, pollen load transported and random visiting among flowers and grafts.

Salazar Rodríguez, Daniela Andrea 10 1900 (has links)
The extent to which floral characters evolve under pollinator-mediated selection has been extensively studied in the literature. However, the relationship between selection and pollinator effectiveness is a less understood subject. The present study aims to identify and quantify the selective force imposed by bees and hummingbirds upon Erythranthe lutea, a high Andean herbaceous plant from central Chile. A major question in this study is to evaluate whether pollinatormediated selection follows the Stebbins` principle of the most efficient pollinator. In doing so, we examined putative selection upon three flower traits of E. lutea during two consecutive years through the female sex function. To examine potential additive or nonadditive pollinator effects, we set four treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial design using hummingbirds (H) and bees (B) as main factors. In this way, we tested for pollinator mediated selection in the following treatments: H+B+, H+B-, H-B+, H-B-. Our results indicate that the most efficient pollinator was the exotic bumblebee Bombus terrestris, one of the responsible species of the higher selective force imposed by bees. In particular, bees promoted the reproduction of flowers with large-sized corollas in the 2016 period. However, during the 2017 nonadditive effects were detected, indicating that the effect of bees were contingent to the presence of bees and viceversa, which prevented the assessment of independent effects. While E. lutea seems to be evolving under Stebbins’ principle, it is necessary to demonstrate that the gained fitness after floral traits specialization exceeds the fitness cost associated to the loss of other less efficient pollinators. The observation that B. terrestris was the most efficient pollinator in the pollinator assemblage suggests that introduced pollinators can drive new and rapid floral adaptation processes. In consequence, understanding the evolutionary impact of exotic pollinators can help to the design of conservation policies in the face of biotic exchange and broad scale homogenization. / Proyecto FONDECYT 1150112.

Ferrer Rosende, Pedro Felipe 11 1900 (has links)
The spatial structure is a variable that influences a wide variety of phenomena in ecology and evolution. In evolutionary ecology, it has been pointed out that the phenotype-fitness covariance can be overestimated if it is not controlled by effects of spatial dependence. However, the spatial structure of organisms has rarely been explicitly considered in natural selection studies and to our knowledge the effect of spatial autocorrelation on selection by different pollinator assemblages has never been considered taking into account their respective foraging techniques and the possible impact on the selection gradients separately. This study focuses on the relationship between the herbaceous Erythranthe lutea and two assemblages of pollinators (bees and hummingbirds) in a population of central Chile, in an attempt to investigate how the spatial structure of plants affects estimates of phenotypic selection. We evaluated the association of five phenotypic traits (number of flowers of the plant in a 30 cm radius, floral tube lenght, anther-stigma distance, corolla and nectar guide area), with estimates of female fitness, considering the spatial structure by a smoothing function in a GAMM model. This allowed us to compare the multivariate selection of traits in the presence and absence of the spatial variable as well as the direct effect of the spatial variable on fitness. The results revealed spatial autocorrelation in the first distance categories in the traits of each treatment, but not in the fitness or residuals of the model which was represented by a low variation of the selection coefficients when controlling for the spatial structure. Despite this, spatial structure had a significant effect on seed production in the presence of bees and hummingbirds. Independent of the magnitude, selection estimates that do not consider space as a variable that contributes to phenotype-fitness covariance may over or underestimate the selective forces acting on the floral phenotype in plant populations. / Proyecto FONDECYT 1150112.

Biologia floral de Zeyheria tuberculosa (Bignoniaceae) /

Souza, Camila Vaz de. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The Bignoniaceae family is a good model for studies about evolutionary diversification that gave rise to the diversity of tropical plant communities, and the interaction with pollinators is a determining factor. Zeyheria tuberculosa is an endangered species and has characteristics related to melittophily syndrome. Information on the reproduction of this species may help to understand the ecological processes that may have led this species to be included in the Red List of endangered species. This goal of this study was to investigate the floral biology of Z. tuberculosa, focusing on the pattern of nectar secretion and the functional and structural characteristics of the floral nectary, which is the responsible for producing the essential resource for maintaining the interaction with pollinators. The results were divided into two sections that deal with specific and complementary issues. The first includes information about the events of floral anthesis, the pollination ecology and the pattern of nectar secretion in plants of Z. tuberculosa located in semi-deciduous forest fragments, immersed in a modified landscape. The second deals with the structure and functioning of the floral nectary of this species, focusing on the characteristics related to the type of secretion. For Chapter 1, we monitored flowers throughout anthesis; we performed focal observations of floral visitors and captured them to examine the pollen deposition area; recorded the percentage of viable pollen grains and the period of stigma receptivity; obtained data on the morphometry of flowers and pollinator bees; made self-incompatibility tests to assess the dependence of pollen vectors for cross-fertilization; evaluated the dynamics of nectar secretion through the volume, concentration and total milligrams of sugars parameters, using the latter parameter to calculate the caloric supply available to pollinators by flower and plant, and we carried out analyzes on the ... / Mestre

Plant reproductive processes are determinants of the composition and structure of communities. We evaluated the reproductive characteristics of plant species occurring in severely disturbed areas that were re-vegetated, with native plant species in order to evaluate the restoration process. Between March, 2013, and January, 2014, the floral attributes of all of the flowering plants found in 50 plots distributed among five riparian forest fragments in different stages of succession were recorded and used to characterize pollination syndromes. Richness, abundance and composition of pollination syndromes was related to climatic periods, age and width of the forest fragment, richness and abundance of plants, and the quality of the surrounding matrix. There were differences in the composition of syndromes among sampling units (F=54.402, p<0.001), and among climatic periods (F=8.8942, p<0.001). Richness (X²=18.869, p<0.001) and abundance (X²=100.97, p<0.001) of pollination syndromes varied among climatic periods, having the highest values in the end of the dry season and the start of the rainy season. Older areas, wider areas, and areas with more plants had higher values of richness and abundance of syndromes. The quality of the surrounding matrix influences only the richness of syndromes. We conclude that floral characteristics are good indicators of environmental restoration in riparian forests re-vegetated and that the surrounding matrix contributes to the greater richness of syndromes.

The Bignoniaceae family is a good model for studies about evolutionary diversification that gave rise to the diversity of tropical plant communities, and the interaction with pollinators is a determining factor. / Although predators may exert different effects on the behavior of pollinators, parasitoids and phytophagous, little is known about its effects on the risk behavior of these three guilds in the same system. We performed a experimental study to investigate the contrast in foraging behavior between phytophagous, pollinators and parasitoids, manipulating an atmosphere of predation risk on reproductive branches of Trichogoniops adenantha (DC) in the Serra do Japi, Jundiaí, SP. For this, we compared the number of visits to flowers with and without predators. Additionally, we used two species of spiders, Peucetia rubrolineata (Oxyopidae) and Misumenops argenteus (Thomisidae), which use different hunting strategies and forage in different parts of plant. Phytophagous decrease over 50 % of visits when exposed to predator, and avoided carrying flowers indistinctly with P. rubrolineata or M. argenteus. Among the pollinators, predators recognition is taxa specific. In this case, only the bees avoided flowers with M. argenteus, which decreased 60% in the number of its visits. We purpose that the contrast among guilds occur due to the existence of different taxonomic groups. These data provide a new perspective for studies of predation risk, demonstrating that the effect of predators can be distinguished according to the guild observed in the system. How different guilds may cause distinct effects for plant reproductive success, it is important to contemplate the contrast effects of risk behavior among guilds in studies that focus on trophic cascades. The constrating results observed for the different guilds, in particular, the fact of the phytophagous avoiding plants with spiders can be indirectly positive for the reproductive success of plant (i.e. the presence of spiders could influence biotic protection of the plant). Most studies on biotic protection of a plant uses only one kind of predator . However, a current challenge for ecology is to...
