This dissertation analyzes the internationalization strategies of the Latin American
television market, with emphasis on producers of Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. With the advent of the videotape, which in the late 1950s enables the simultaneous recording of sound and image on tape, communications companies begin to increase the circulation of their products for different territories. In addition to
facilitating the economic situation led by the establishment of political liberalism, in the 1970s, telenovela producers of aggregate new economic function to their serial fiction: after completion of production, the symbolic good is stocked to continue generating revenue to its investors through transnational acquisition. In this ambiance, Globo and Televisa implement strategies towards the international market, while the Argentine market, through its horizontal logic of production, is experiencing a period of proliferation of independent producers, who begin to sell content to national and foreign broadcasters. The techno-aesthetic standard runs through the different production models for the three countries, establishing links
between the cultural industry, economy and communication. From the perspective of Political Economy of Communication, we discuss questions that seek to specify the interrelationships of contemporary capitalism with global communication systems, initiated in an effort reflecting on the structures of this particular market and their respective entry barriers. Still, we recover the advent of the studied economic actors, tracing a global history about telenovelas and the movements of the television industry, such as their action policies and economic factors triggered since the reconfiguration of capitalism.

The Commodification of the Couch : A Dialectical Analysis of Hospitality Exchange NetworksSchöpf, Simon January 2014 (has links)
Hospitality exchange (HospEx) networks – online platforms facilitating the connection between a traveler and a local resident – embody many of the cyber-utopian promises intrinsic to the Web as it started out 25 years ago. Such sites have often been conceptualized as a new and daring trend in a booming ‘sharing industry’ and have been researched for topics such as trust, reputation, and online identities. Yet, a more critical look uncovers that crucial issues of ownership, power, digital labour, and organizational structures have often been left out. To fill this gap, this thesis investigates upon the antagonistic struggle between the commons and processes of commodification in the light of critical theory and political economy. The research shows that examples with characteristics of both concepts are manifested in the niche social networking space of HospEx platforms. The biggest of those platforms, Couchsurfing.org, changed its organizational orientation from a non-profit, commons-based project towards a for-profit company in 2011 – an instance of commodification. An analysis of both quantitative and qualitative community data shows that the transformation consequently concerns a member on multiple levels. The structural change of ownership results in a loss of transparency and privacy, an alteration of the platform’s integrity, a sacrifice of the ‘uniqueness’ of the community, and a differing relationship between the user and the platform. To shed light on an antagonistic force and suggest an alternative, community-based governance approach, the work further explores the specifics of a platform guided by the logic of the commons. Interviews with volunteers of the non-commercial, non-profit HospEx platform BeWelcome.org helped to deepen an understanding of how a digital commons can be sustained and what challenges they face. The thesis concludes that the developments observed on Couchsurfing are not an exception but rather characteristic and part of a broader trend manifested in all areas of digital media, and indeed modern society in general: commodification processes frequently jeopardize the commons and incorporate them into the logic of capital.

Brazil´s social communication conglomerates are the finished portrayal of a system territorially spreaded and institutionally centered. The media analysis, based on the digital platform of the Donos da Mídia Project, evidenced that more than 25% of the 9,477 vehicles of communication identified by the project are directly or indirectly influenced by 54 radio and TV networks. These are top organisations in a system defined by five conditions: triple economic concentration (diagonal, vertical and horizontal), network distribution control, regional penetration, historical presence and political relations. At the same time, its companies act simultaneously in four dimensions: economic, politics, symbolic and historical. Taken together these two characteristics configure the Media Central System model. This dissertation has identificatified ten conglomerates within this model. They control, directly or indirectly, 12 television networks, 9 of radio and 1,310 vehicles of communication, in total 14% of the base identified for the research. Understanding how media companies organize themselves to gain and consolidate market share is particularly interesting considering the reduced distance between the Brazilian and foreigners agents of communications as a result of technological convergence.
