The early period of the national liberation of Mozambique provided a stage for superpower competition, and a means for different African states, groups of states, and organizations to advance their particular, and often conflicting goals and agendas. In so doing, both the superpowers and regional African actors were supporting different rival Mozambican nationalist leaders and their respective movements. More than being only a conflict between Portuguese authorities and Mozambican nationalists, the process of Mozambican national liberation was also a proxy confrontation between different foreign actors. The thesis examines the relations and power dynamics within the complex of superpowers - African states - national liberation movements, in the contexts of the Cold War, African affairs and the process of national liberation of Mozambique. It assesses the roles played by local and regional African actors in affecting Soviet and American interests and designs throughout their engagements with the process of Mozambican national liberation, from 1961 to 1964.

Desenvolvemos a discussão sobre o papel das empresas de segurança privada como novos atores no sistema internacional, e observamos o alcance das descobertas sobre tais empresas quando confrontadas com o caso de Angola / Nowadays, one of the phenomena that draws attention and raises the debate within the discipline of international relations is the rise of the so-called private security companies. The present dissertation studies the inclusion of such companies in the Angolan context during the 1990s. This inclusion is marked by two moments, the first one paradigmatic for the literature on the subject, the particular action of the company Executive Outcomes. Secondly, we discuss the development of a local market for private security, built by a series of devices that make the Angolan landscape a unique and poorly studied model. Angola was a testing ground for the actions of the private security companies, but turned out to be an exceptional case with a number of local companies providing security for the country during its own internal conflict, and making them fundamental for the design of Power in Angola. This situation is derived from a number of specific features of the Angolan history, especially the continued violence and the perpetuation of state fragility. We further explore the discussion on the role of private security companies as new actors in the international system, and observe the range of findings about these companies when confronted with the case of Angola

This thesis analyzes the role of the global media in world politics. The global media as a major source of information performs many functions in world politics. Due to the technological innovations both the global media and world politics has extended their scope and content. It is the aim of this thesis to explore to what extent the global media and world politics changes and to what extent the global media affect world politics. Moreover, this thesis aims to analyze the actors that play a significant role in the relation of global media and world politics. This thesis will also question the importance and effects of global media in world politics through the examples of Iraq War of 2003. This thesis argues that global media are the important actor of world politics by their agenda-setting, impediment and accelerant effects which influences public opinion. The aim of this thesis is to question the power of the global media on public opinion through the existential media structures, while showing the effects of global media by the examples of Iraq War of 2003.

[pt] Esta dissertação se organiza a partir de três ensaios – A Língua como intraduzível, Os Rios que Comunicam e O Futuro do Pretérito – que focalizam questões relevantes na obra do escritor José Luandino Vieira. O objetivo é identificar, em alguns de seus livros, as formas com que a linguagem é trabalhada pelo autor em sua ficção, de modo a criar espaços de utopia política; dos tempos de luta pela independência angolana, na segunda metade do século XX, às primeiras décadas do século XXI. Pretende-se mostrar ainda como sua busca por uma utopia permanece ao longo do tempo, não tendo cessado com o fim da guerra de independência nacional. A busca por justiça e por inclusão social materializam-se como utopias, expressas sobretudo na linguagem adotada pelo escritor. No primeiro capítulo desta dissertação, discuto seu investimento na linguagem, e como isso é radical – no sentido de estar na raiz – de sua literatura e projeto de mundo. No segundo, falo mais amplamente como o rio – que flui e que segue, que some e volta a existir – é tema existente em Guimarães Rosa e Luandino, que seguem uma genealogia de criadores com a língua, mas que têm mais em comum do que ela. No terceiro, aprofundo-me nas questões políticas levantadas por seus textos e nas suas intenções. / [en] This thesis is organized from three essays – Language as untranslatable, Rivers that communicate and Future of the Past – that focus in relevant questions of the writer José Luandino Vieira work. The aim is to identify, in some of his books, how language is used by the author in his fiction, as a tool to create political utopian spaces; beginning during the time of fighting for Angola s independence, in the second half of the twentieth century, till the first decades of the twenty first century. It intends also to show how his search for utopia continues through time, and has not stopped with the end of the national independence war. The search for justice and social inclusion gain life as utopias, expressed above all in the language adopted by the author. In the first chapter of this dissertation, I talk about his investment in language and how is this crucial for his literature and his world Project. In the second, I talk more broadly about how the river – that comes and goes, disappears and reaches back to existence – is a subject presente in both, Guimarães Rosa and Luandino, following a genealogy of language creators, but with more in common than just that. In the third, I talk in-depth about the political issues raised in his texts and his intentions.
