AN EVALUATION OF THE READABILITY, COMPLETENESS, AND ACCURACY OF SELECTED DRUG INFORMATION BOOKS FOR THE CONSUMER

Stratton, Timothy Patrick, 1957- January 1982 (has links)
An increased demand by consumers for more prescription drug information has resulted in many consumer-oriented books on the subject. Fourteen such books were identified and assessed for readability, completeness, and accuracy. Ten drugs were randomly selected for review from among the 225 most frequently prescribed brand name and generic drugs for 1980. The Caylor formula was selected to evaluate readability. The thirteen points from ASHP's "Statement on Pharmacist-Conducted Patient Counseling" served as the basis by which completeness was measured. The United States Pharmacopeia Dispensing Information (USP DI) served as the standard professional reference for counseling patients about their medicines. It was used to test the completeness and accuracy of each book. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) were selected for the readability and completeness sections. Readability means ranged from ninth grade to college level. The intrabook readability range width ranged from less than one grade level to over four grade levels. Completeness ranged from less than 30% to over 75% of the information provided by the USP DI. All test books achieved a minimum accepatble level of accuracy relative to the USP DI. Finally, the books were rated and ranked by various factors related to their readability and completeness.

Nursing strategies to facilitate self-management in persons living with diabetes mellitus type 2

O'Brien Coleen Ann January 2011 (has links)
The growing pandemic of diabetes mellitus (DM) is continuing to spread around the world with developing countries being most vulnerable. Diabetes mellitus is the direct cause of 5 percent of deaths worldwide at present, with an expected increase of 50percent in the next 10 years. Diabetes mellitus was virtually unknown in Africa at the start of the 20th century but the incidence is expected to increase by 80 percent by 2025. South African estimates indicate that at present there are up to four million people living with DM in South Africa, with an expected rise of 25 percent by 2020. If DM is not adequately controlled, life-threatening complications ensue, resulting in financial, physical and emotional costs both for people living with the condition and for their families. There is also a great financial burden on the state, both directly due to the cost of providing health care and indirectly due to loss of productivity and a reduced tax base. Global initiatives against DM include the Diabetes Strategy for Africa compiled by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization. There are several forms of DM with Type 2 being the most common with an estimated 95% of cases. Optimal glycaemic control is essential for the management of DM, potentially allowing the course of the disease to be slowed or halted. The previous medical model of management of chronic disease has changed to an empowerment approach where the person living with the condition is a partner in the management process. This is particularly true of DM where all aspects of life are affected by the condition. During Phase One of this study, a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, contextual approach was utilized to explore and describe the experiences of persons living with DM and of diabetes nurse educators who assist them in Nelson Mandela Bay. During Phase Two, a conceptual framework was created and utilized to develop strategies which professional nurses may use in facilitating self-management by persons living with DM. Persons living with DM experience a definite initial experience on diagnosis of DM but gradually gain an acceptance and acknowledgment of their condition. They have definite views on the concept of self-management and experience both positive and negative factors influencing self-management. They also have definite ideas on how professional nurses may assist them in achieving self-management. These findings were confirmed ii by the experiences of the diabetes nurse educators who formed the second group of participants in this study. The ACE approach to self-management of DM consists of an Action Strategy, a Coordination Strategy and an Education Strategy. The ACE approach makes use of grand and functional strategies implemented on the macro (national), meso (provincial) and micro (local) levels to enable the professional nurse to assist persons living with DM to achieve self-management of their condition. Grand strategies need to be implemented on a macro or meso level to enable the professional nurse to function effectively on a micro level. Assisting the patient has to go beyond merely improving knowledge about the condition but has to include individual goal setting as well as problem solving skills and coping strategies as part of a therapeutic relationship between the professional nurse and the person living with DM. The level of personal responsibility achieved by persons living with DM is affected by the memes which they hold regarding their level of health and their ability to address any barriers to self-management which they may experience. Making use of the process of the therapeutic relationship, the professional nurse is able to positively influence the memes held by persons living with DM and assist them in achieving a greater level of personal responsibility. The therapeutic relationship is potentially influenced by all three of the strategies described above. This study provides insight into the experiences of persons living with DM and of the diabetes nurse educators who assist them in Nelson Mandela Bay. Recommendations regarding the implementation of a National Diabetes Policy on a macro level are made, as well as recommendations for nursing practice, education and research. The strategies which were evaluated by an Expert Panel provide a tool for the professional nurse to use while assisting persons living with DM by facilitating the growth of personal responsibility leading to self-management.

Implementation Of Quality Management System In An Irrigation Project

Dedekli, Birkan Nihat 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
There is a growing tendency in the application of the quality management system to the construction industry. Within this perspective, some quality management standards, like ISO 9001, are utilized to assure the quality in projects. Application of this system to water resources projects is also of importance since they are very large systems having various components for which quality management would improve the overall efficiency. The aim of this thesis is to examine the implementation of the quality management in the design and construction processes of a sample irrigation network in order to evaluate its benefits by the cost of quality, which is assumed to be the most effective performance measure. To this end, the prevention and appraisal costs and failure costs, which constitute the cost of quality, are identified separately and their interactions are investigated on a case study in which the causes of these failures are analyzed and quantified in the form of graphs.

To Grasp the Unexpected : Information Following a Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Defect in the Fetus

Carlsson, Tommy January 2017 (has links)
The aim was to explore experiences and needs of information following a prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defect, and to assess the quality of publicly available information websites about congenital heart defects. Study I was a qualitative interview study that explored experiences among 11 parents to prenatally diagnosed children. Respondents tried to grasp the facts today while reflecting on the future, and personal contact with medical specialists was valued. The analysis showed that the Web contained an overwhelming amount of information. Study II was a qualitative interview study that explored experiences among 26 females and males 5-15 weeks after a prenatal diagnosis. Respondents hunted for information in a confusing reality, with a need for information about various topics and methods for information delivery. Although high satisfaction with the specialist information was described, the information was considered overwhelming and complex. Supplemental information was sought via the Web. Insufficient information about induced abortions was described. Study III was a quantitative study that explored content and quality of 67 English websites about congenital heart defects. Few websites included information about prenatal aspects, such as pregnancy termination. The overall quality was poor, especially reliability and information about treatment choices. Study IV was a mixed methods study that explored the quality of 10 Swedish websites about congenital heart defects, from the perspectives of 9 assessors with personal experience of a prenatal diagnosis. Quantitative Likert scale assessments were followed by written open-ended questions and focus group discussions. Quantitative assessments represented unfulfilled quality criterion for treatment choices, and partially fulfilled quality criteria for appearance, details, relevance, suitability and overall quality. Websites had significantly different scores for all investigated quality criteria. Various issues were highlighted in the responses to the open-ended questions and during the discussions, including inappropriate advertisements, biased information, poor illustrations, complex language and poor trustworthiness. In conclusion, expectant parents faced with a prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defect in the fetus try to grasp the unexpected, an attempt that involves difficulties in relation to information. These are present during the consultation with health professionals and when searching for web-based information.

The main objective was to conduct a study on the use of arrangements for chamber groups with bass, demonstrating possibilities for increasing the repertoire and teaching materials. The methodological process was based on the literature review of the performance of the instrument in genres of popular music, particularly jazz, as well as chamber music and the main teaching methods used in the country. For that the use of technical resources from these two musical universes was discussed, applied in works of Brazilian popular music. The study sought to demonstrate that the use of arrangements of Brazilian popular music for chamber groups can serve as an alternative to expanding the repertoire and didactic material for teaching the instrument the bass.
