Fenomén zdravého životního stylu v online prostředí: výzkum publika / The phenomenom of a heathy lifestyle online: an audience research

Jindrová, Eliška January 2015 (has links)
The objective of the diploma theses "The Phenomenon of Healthy Lifestyle in the Online Setting: Public Research" is to introduce detailed characteristics of the audience consuming media subject matter focusing on healthy lifestyle. For this purpose the audience is defined as a group of readers of the thematic blog. At the same time the readers are linked up into the social network community and lead discussions of the given topic. The first part of the theses sets a theoretical framework of the healthy lifestyle phenomenon in the society and in the media. It is followed by the research of the audience using quantitative and qualitative indicator methods. Initially a "research preview" based on a questionnaire is completed, which provides general characteristics of the audience. The qualitative research realized by the method of the grounded theory using a form of half-structured dialogues with selected people from the audience describes in detail the role of healthy lifestyle in their lives and which values in this field these people follow. It also describes their habits connected with the consumption of the media subject matter focused on the topic, while the main emphasis is put on media channels in the online setting.

Bodies of knowledge : science, medicine and authority in popular periodicals, 1832-1850

Furlong, Claire Rosemary January 2015 (has links)
Over the course of the 1830s and 1840s, a professional scientific and medical community was coming into being. Exclusive membership, limits to the definition of science, and separation of the professional from the popular sphere became important elements in the consolidation of scientific authority. Studies exploring Victorian scientific authority have tended to focus on professional journals and organs of middle-class culture; this thesis takes a new approach in exploring how this authority is reflected and negotiated across the content of the popular mass-market periodicals which provided leisure reading for working- and lower-class men and women. It uses as examples Chambers's Edinburgh Journal, Reynolds's Miscellany and the Family Herald. The readers of these publications were consumers of scientific information, participants in popularised science and beneficiaries and subjects of new research, but were increasingly excluded from the formal processes of developing scientific theory and practice. Examining representations of anatomy and of mesmerism, health advice and theories of class and gender, the thesis argues for an expanded understanding of mass-market periodicals as communicators of scientific ideas, showing how such material widely informs the content of these publications from fiction to jokes to full-length factual articles. However, the role of the periodicals is much wider than simply the transmission of received ideas, and the thesis reveals a plurality of positions with regard to science and medicine within the popular press. The periodicals engage with modern science in complex and varied ways, accepting, modifying and challenging scientific theories and methods from different positions. The form of the periodical is key, presenting multiple sources of knowledge and ways in which readers may be invited to respond. Chambers's broad support for scientific progress is informed by its useful knowledge identity but tempered by its founding editor's own ambivalent relationship to the scientific establishment. The Herald, influenced by both the periodical's commercial character and its editor's adherence to a spiritual, anti-materialist view of existence, is strongly resistant to modern science, while Reynolds's incorporates it alongside other forms of knowledge in its aim to educate, entertain and empower readers from a socialist perspective.

Harding, Christopher Lowell 12 December 2008 (has links)
Contributors to children's ministry produce many resources that are consumed by local congregations, determining the direction of their evangelism and discipleship with children. Chapter 1 describes the purpose of this research which was to investigate the attitudes and assumptions of significant contributors to children's ministry towards cultural relevancy as a determining factor for ministry development. Chapter 2 addresses the theological, historical, and educational bases for children's ministry. This chapter also gives attention to the current trends in children's ministry philosophy and methodology. Chapter 3 provides a description of the research design and experience. The qualitative process is described as well as the data collection and analysis of the interview process. Chapter 4 describes the findings from the data collection. Specific attention is given to the categories discovered while utilizing elements of the grounded theory approach to research. Chapter 5 provides a summary of the conclusions drawn from the findings in response to the research questions. General findings included a strong theological foundation and a passionate desire to be culturally relevant as motivators for the work of the recognized contributors to children's ministry. ministry KEY WORDS: Children's ministry, Theology of children, Developmentalism, Culture, Postmodernism, Church and Children / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Spaza Hip hop in the townships of Khayelitsha

Mashiyi, Sikelelwa Anita January 2019 (has links)
Masters of Art / Since the arrival of hip-hop in Cape Town and indeed South Africa in the 1980s, a diverse and vibrant range of hip-hop sub-genres has developed in Cape Town. Scholarship, however, have approached hip-hop mainly through a linguistical angle focusing mostly on Cipha hiphop in the Cape Flats. This ethnographic work looks at performances and practices of Spaza hip-hop. It explores the musical genre of Spaza hip-hop in the township of Khayelitsha, discussing ideas advanced by scholarship almost ten years ago and re-assessing issues of language, citizenship and ethnicity from today’s perspective. It looks at Spaza hip-hop not only as a musical genre, as it explores questions of identity, ethnicity, race, and gender. My research discusses how Spaza hip-hop music is consumed today, how it is produced and how it circulates. Across two years of fieldwork, I followed park sessions, open mic sessions and events; I have interviewed artists, producers and audiences. I argue that Spaza hip-hop in 2018 had changed drastically from its first apparition. Not only most of the artists are now older, but also the Spaza hip-hop scene is now invaded by trap hip-hop artists. Across my research I explore issues of gender in hip hop which is generally perceived as a “masculine” music. I illustrate how female artists constantly challenge norms and negotiate a space of their own, paradoxically transforming Spaza hip hop in a space for freedom.

Students' responses to the insertion of popular culture into an English literature curriculum: A Rwandan case study

Nyirahuku, Bella 10 April 2007 (has links)
Student Number: 0209777E Master of Arts in English Education Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education / The research report explores a pedagogic and curricular intervention in the English curriculum of third year pre-service education students at the National University of Rwanda. It uses as an implementation instance the Bana Molokai subculture as a means of relating the teaching of English literature to cultural practices found in the students’ living space which are semiotically more diverse than the traditional literary-linguistic forms. My research attempts to establish whether and how the pedagogical intervention of teaching cultural artefacts produced by the Bana Molokai can enrich the learning/teaching of literature in this context. At a secondary level, the introduction of the Bana Molokai youth culture phenomenon into a literature classroom calls attention to the presence of the youth culture phenomenon on the continent as an emerging site for the articulation of the contemporary interests and needs of African youth. Therefore, although the pedagogical intervention forms the major component of this Research project, it incorporates a preliminary phase: an overview of the Bana Molokai subculture as an illustration of the vitality of texts from the field of popular culture on the African continent. The study uses an analysis of students’ responses before and after the pedagogical intervention as a means of providing comparative evidence of students’ perceptions of existing literary practices in their context in the light of the expansion. In effect, it uses in the first instance emerging thematic points in the students’ responses in order to understand their perception of literary practices as a preliminary justification of an interventionist expansion in Rwanda. In the second instance, it uses emerging thematic points in the students’ responses to the pedagogical intervention to unravel how the lesson of teaching Bana Molokai has related them to the exercise of learning/teaching literature in their context. The analysis furthermore attempts to indicate the comparative benefits of teaching Bana Molokai texts in Rwanda in regards to the established literary canon.

Filmindustrin och publiken : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av karaktärer från de mest populära filmerna under 2018 ur ett genusperspektiv / The movie industry and the audience : A quantitative content analysis of characters from the eight most popular movies from 2018 through a gender perspective

Weismann, Ester, Hammarlund, Emilia January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to look at the representation of males and females in movies and analyse whether it may be problematic in an audience perspective[EW1] . Problematic in that sense that the film industry is governed by, possibly also governing, the contemporary values and beliefs of the society. Through an historical overview of theories on media effects and audiences, we reach a point of view on whether media messages are accepted by the mass or if individuals can dismiss the whole or a part of the message. The theoretical part also includes chapters of gender, representation and stereotypes as we want to enlighten what the popular culture tells us about gender stereotypes and how it may or may not be problematic.   To reach a conclusion we have throughout the films used a coding scheme in which we count different occurrences, roles and functions the characters may have. To keep the coding as far away from subjective understandings we have included definitions of the variables. Through the result of the coding we created statistics which helped us form an analysis and conclusion of the problem formulation. In this essay we have not involved any questions directly towards the audience or individuals watching the films thus making our analysis theoretical[MOU2] .   Overall, the result of the coding scheme showed a lack of female characters. The females’ function in the films were very often as an object towards a male character. She was always someone’s other or functioned as a figure of motivation by being killed off alternatively needing to be saved. The male characters often filled the roles as heroes but had much wider variation than the females. We also discovered a pattern that the average age of the female character is lower than the male. / <p>Gabor Bora är examinator för den aktuella uppsatsen medan Per Vesterlund är examinator för hela kursen.</p>

Commodification of sexual labor: the contribution of Internet communities to prostitution reform

Unknown Date (has links)
This is an ethnographic study of a self-regulated Internet site that facilitates illegal female prostitution in South Florida. The purpose is to identify the social and economic characteristics of the site that can contribute to acceptable prostitution reform. The members of the site appear to sustain an orderly and mutually respectful exchange of sexual services for money, suggesting that certain social and economic features of this form of transaction diminish barriers otherwise present in typical forms of contemporary prostitution exchange. The study evaluates the thesis that when commercial sex is conducted in an open atmosphere of respect, trust and mutual understanding, within certain economic parameters, the beliefs and practices that stigmatize prostitutes and prostitution are neutralized. Evidence was generated through extensive observation of an online venue that approximates what prostitution would be like if open market exchange in sexual labor did exist. These data are supplemented by interviews with participants of the online community. Features of mutual respect, trust, and understanding, characteristically absent in traditional prostitution venues, appear to be part of an emerging community phenomenon that facilitates prostitution online. Thus, this study engages with the larger scholarly position that normalization of sex work is necessary for successful prostitution reform. This community utilizes a non-legal enforcement mechanism to facilitate cooperative exchanges based on establishing trust between participants. At the center of the cooperation system is a reputation mechanism that fosters trust between potential partners by encouraging participants to post honest reviews of their encounters with each other. / Understanding the social order as a cooperation game where participants publicly signal each other in an attempt to find the most desirable partners explains the mutual trust and respect that participants have for each other. Because stigma and disrespect are founded on mistrust, this cooperation mechanism is effective in minimizing undesirable attitudes, beliefs, and practices that stigmatize and oppress prostitutes. This study suggests that prostitution reform acceptable to many feminists is possible. But in order for meaningful reform to work in practice, it must be accompanied by regulations carefully designed to protect the sexual autonomy of women without stigmatizing prostitutes. / by Jeffrey R.
