Previous issue date: 2017-04-05 / The distinct aspects that involve the sphere of human activity, in which the Popularisation of Science News (PSN) is produced in the written mode, and the types of dialogic relations in the process of resignification of Scientific Discourse (SD) for the Discourse of Science Popularisation (DSP), present in the utterances of PSN, are indispensable elements to provide the wider public in society with access to scientific knowledge. We defend the thesis that the types of dialogic relations on which is grounded the process of resignification of the utterances of SD in utterances of the PSN genre – a heterodiscursive genre – favour the construction of the meaning of the utterances by the PSN reading public. The guiding question for this research is: What types of dialogic relations are relevant to describe the process of resignification of SD in the utterances of PSN? Inserting ourselves into the dialogic perspective of language, the proposal of this research is to analyse the boundaries of the process of resignification from one discourse to another, from one form of communicating to another. In this way, grounded on the Bakhtinian concepts of language, the research has the general aim of analysing and identifying the types of dialogic relations that are the basis of the process of resignification of SD to PSN. The research corpus consists of two representative samples of SD: a scientific article, published in the CELL journal, and a report, published in the Science magazine. As for samples of DSP, we chose three PSNs published on internet sites, as follows: two from the American website Sciencedaily, specialising in science news, and one from the Brazilian journalism portal G1. The choice of these PSNs, which popularised one of the most significant discoveries of the 2000-2010 decade, is justified by the relevance of the contents that they cover. As regards the methodology adopted, this is a qualitative piece of research of a descriptive-explicative nature, in which the data are analysed and interpreted starting from methodological parameters through means of which are analysed the thematic content, the compositional form and the style of the author-enunciator, that is, the journalist, that will reflect his/her axiological positioning and the social context of this genre. The epistemological framework adopted is the one guided by the work arising from the Enunciative Theory on the dialogical perspective of language based on the theoretical formulation of Bakhtin, and of the Circle, such as Bakhtin (1976, 2006, 2013, 2014), Bakhtin/Volochinov (1997, 1976) and Volochinov (1930). Besides this, we have taken as basis of study the analysis of scientific articles developed by Swales (1999 and 2005). With respect to concepts in the journalistic sphere, we have adopted as referential the theoretical assumptions of Bueno (1985, 2010, 2014), Lustosa (1996), Bahia (1990) and Lage (2008, 2011, 2012). The results indicate that the author-enunciator of the PSN acts as mediator between the scientists and society and that there are different types of dialogic relations in the process of resignification of the SD to utterances in the PSN, amongst which three main dimensions stand out: dialogic relations of proximity with the presumed recipient, between preceding and following utterances, and through the schemes of resignification of the discourse of the other.

The Impact of the NIHERST/NGC National Science Centre, Trinidad and Tobago on Visiting Student GroupsChariandy, Celeste Marie-Ange January 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to asses the impact of a visit to the NIHERST/NGC National Science Centre in Trinidad on four different school-age visitor groups. The research was conducted through the administering of a post-visit questionnaire immediately upon completion of each visit by each group, and via visitor feedback obtained in post-visit or pre-visit activities conducted within two weeks of the visit for three groups. Teachers/instructors who accompanied the groups on their visit also completed post-visit questionnaires and provided additional information on follow-up activities via an interview. The results of this investigation suggest that the visit to this science centre provided entertainment/enjoyment value and potential educational value to most individuals. The nature of this enjoyment was noted for various age groups and genders in this study. Quantification of the educational impact was not possible within the constraints of this study, which was unable to capture long-term effects of the supply of ‘new knowledge’ to visitors which the visit to the science centre had provided.

Il linguaggio dei blogs artistici / THE LANGUAGE OF ART BLOGSALLAIS, CATERINA 17 March 2016 (has links)
This study analyses the language of “art blogs”, i.e. blogs dealing with art, through a specialised corpus of fifty-four blogs published during 2013. Both posts and comments are included in the present investigation into the linguistic character of art blogs. The methodological choices reflect the need for a multifaceted analysis which covers different aspects, from text typology to linguistic creativity and popularisation.
A review of the relevant literature on blogs brings to light the need for a specific characterisation of art blogs, since they tend to have a blended style, which cannot be ascribed to the traditional categories of personal and thematic blogging. The distinctive features of posts and comments are then investigated through a multidimensional analysis which reveals that posts and comments are two different text types. Successively, the corpus is compared to a specialised corpus of art announcements, within the field of popularised and specialised discourse. Finally, several examples of linguistic creativity are explored and presented, thus showing that traditional descriptive paradigms are unsuited to analyse the outcomes of art bloggers.

"Demented people and elks are being equipped with GPS!" : A study of the news program Rapport's from 1979 to 2009 / "Dementa och älgar utrustas med GPS!"
The aim of this study was to examine which effect tabloidization has had on the news content and the presentation of the Swedish news program Rapport, during the years 1979 and 2009. Rapport is broadcasted in the Public Service channel "Sveriges Television". Our main concern was to examine whether Rapport has stayed true to their assignment or if they have made changes to appeal to the popularised audience. To do so we focused on three questions: What is the journalist’s role? What becomes news? Who are interviewed? We used theories such as social representation, news value and media logic to help us perform the analysis. Qualitative methods were used to analyse the news broadcasts, of which John Langer’s story-types was the primary method. In addition to that we used the method of semiotics to reveal signs of tabloidization in the imagery of the broadcasts. Our results showed that the tabloidization of Rapport lies in the format rather than the news content. The changes in the news content are barely noticeable, even though the time span is quite long. The format however, has seen some tabloidization in 2009, with changes to the vignette and the feature structure. We also found changes in which people that Rapport chose to interview and changes among the journalists themselves. For instance we discovered that the representation of different groups of people is much more varied in 2009 than it was in 1979. The results also showed that the journalistic role has shifted from the task of educating the citizens to the task of being sensational and entertaining.

Nové přístupy v prezentaci a popularizaci archeologie. Výzkum didaktických aspektů současné role archeologie ve společnosti / New Approaches in Presentation and Popularization of Archaeology. Research of the Didactic Aspects of the Archaeological Contribution to Contemporary SocietyPuhačová, Veronika January 2018 (has links)
This thesis concentrates on new approaches in the popularization of archaeology in the light of its social contribution to the society of the 21st century. Its main research issue is the problem of didactical transformation of the archaeological data and knowledge for the needs of an efficient popularization of the discipline. An effective popularization is considered to be a complex of interdisciplinary processes leading to a multi-layered usage of archaeological in-formation and data by the general public. The author as well emphasizes the substantial educational dimension of archaeological popularization. According to this fact she tries to apply the pieces of knowledge gained from field didactics, museum education and experiential learning on the duplex communication with general public. Thesis consists form a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with information and experiences from public archaeology, history, sociology and philosophy and analyses both familiar and neglected roles of archaeology within the contemporary society and situates them into a broader educational context. The second - practical - part of the thesis focuses on new approaches, methods and themes within the research issue, and introduces several model examples of good praxis as well as seven...

Le discours romanesque de Clara Mundt alias Luise Mühlbach (1814-1873) face à l’histoire : représentation de l’ère napoléonienne, historiographie popularisée et modernité scientifique en Allemagne autour de 1850 / Clara Mundt’s (1814-1873) literary discourse on history : representation of the Napoleonic era, popularized historiography and scientific modernity in Germany about 1850Braun, Stefanie 21 September 2018 (has links)
The thesis deals with popular historiography and scientific modernity in Germany between 1850 and 1862 – namely after the revolution of 1848 and before Otto von Bismarck became Minister President of Prussia – through the study of three historical novels, Königin Hortense (1856), Napoleon in Deutschland (1858/1859) and Kaiserin Josephine (1861) by Theodor Mundt’s wife Clara Mundt (1814-1873) alias Luise Mühlbach. She was one of the most successful historical novelist of her time, and belongs to the first generation of professional female writers. The main focus of this study is on the literary discourse on the history of relationships between France and Germany. The purpose is to demonstrate how the transmission and the popularization of historical knowledge could be used for education to female patriotism and women citizenship. The study of the use of testimonies and documentary sources borrowed from recent historians shows how L. Mühlbach proceeded to appropriate historical material and to upgrade female figures of the past. Besides the dissertation deals with the analysis of the several historical, political, social and literary mechanisms which explain the success of Clara Mundt’s historical novels between 1850 and 1860. The study puts emphasis on the continuities between L. Mühlbach’s social novels of the Vormärz and the historical novels, like the social and religious issues and the topic of women’s emancipation, in order to question the idea of a split in her work before and after 1848.

Old testament texts in Malagasy contexts: an analysis of the use of the old testament in three religious contexts in MadagascarRazafindrakoto, Georges Andrianoelina 30 June 2006 (has links)
The Old Testament, which is one of the first books in the Malagasy language, plays an important role in the religious and cultural life of most people in Madagascar, for instance in an increasing tendency to use Old Testament texts in Malagasy religious contexts, which is noticeable both within and outside mainstream Christianity.
The first such case illustrating this trend within the Church is the Malagasy Roman Catholic Church's (MRCC's) application of certain texts in the famadihana (turning of the dead), a custom reflecting traditional Malagasy practices in their strongest form. Almost all the Malagasy churches from their beginning have unsuccessfully attempted to abolish it. Therefore, the MRCC decided to base it on biblical texts and incorporated it in her liturgy in order to make it a Christian celebration. Among the texts used here are: Genesis 49: 33-50: 13; Exodus 13: 19 and Exodus 20: 12. The second case is the Malagasy Lutheran Church's (MLC's) employment of Old Testament texts to create certain items for Nenilava (Tall mother), the founder of the revival movement of Ankaramalaza, who was acknowledged by this Church and the members of this movement as a prophetess and priestess. To demonstrate these roles, and at the same time to confirm her consecration, the MLC and the `children of Ankaramalaza' made for her a priestly robe modelled on the high priest's garments described in Exodus 28 and a silver crown related to Deuteronomy 28. The use of the Old Testament outside the Church is illustrated by the third case, investigating traditio-practitioners' applications of Old Testament texts in their religious practices. Examples include: 1) Exodus 3:1-3; Leviticus 14: 1-8; Jeremiah 8: 22, used in traditional healing; 2) Exodus 3: 5b; Job 33: 6a; Psalm 121: 8a, employed as religious slogans; 3) Leviticus 1-6, applied in traditional sacrifices and offerings; and 4) Psalm 113: 5-6; Genesis 2: 18, 22, employed as references for morality. This project, which describes and analyses how and why the Old Testament is used by different people, Christian and traditionalist, in Malagasy religious contexts, is aimed at developing an interpretive model based on these three cases. More specifically, it seeks to show how the Old Testament can be interpreted and used in contemporary Madagascar/Africa. / Biblical and Ancient studies / D. Th (Old Testament)
