Ikonografie Rudolfa II. / Iconography of Rudolf II.

Zlatohlávková, Eliška January 2014 (has links)
Many portraits of Rudolf II were painted and created during his lifetime, forming a significant component of Rudolfine art, however, they have not received a sufficient art historical attention. They document, at times at stylyzed manner, the transformation of Rudolf's appearance. However, their most important task was to demonstrate and make tangeable Rudolf's authentic appearance to the world and to celebrate his magnanimity and personality. Thus, there are many portraits that represent Rudolf as a good emperor or a brilliant commander, although, as we know, they did not correspond to reality. A special chapter of the portrait iconography also create complicated allegories about Rudolf's reign relying on representations of personifications, mythological and animal symbols using Rudolf's personal impresa. Most of the portraits follow former portrait types typical for the 16th century, as bust, standing figure or equestrian monument. However, the peculiarity for Rudolfine portraiture is the allegorical portrait Rudolf as Vertumnus painted by Giuseppe Arcimboldo that combines classical portrait with allegory.

As conclusões desta pesquisa,... / This research is constituted by two complimentary parts: the first one reports the creative process of the paintings produced by myself between 2013 and 2015, which are exhibited here. The key-concepts analyzed on the following chapters are originated from the report and aim to expose reflections derived from practice by establishing links with other authors and artists. The dissertation focuses on the act of seeing, since the paintings I produce require direct observation of visual references. In that sense, the act of looking at things around me led to the finding that I'm not visible to myself, and starting from this premise, the research investigates the necessity of visual perception of oneself, by analyzing self-portrait paintings and the usage of instruments that make us visible, such as the mirror and photograph, and the visual perception of others, by examining our relation with the objects that belong to the interior of a home. It is also presented an investigation of two artists: Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin and Giorgio Morandi. The research conclusions, in accordance with Silvio Zamboni conceptions, are contained in the produced paintings.

The objective of this dissertation is to study the representations and self-representations of free blacks, freed people and slaves produced in the studios of photographers in Brazil in the second half of the 19th century. I argue that free and freed black people who appear in these pictures dressed in European fashion did not choose to do so because of their supposed acculturation, but rather as a strategy to protect themselves and to achieve their aims in a society in which racial prejudice and discrimination were pervasive. Regarding the pictures of slaves, they belong to three categories; first, there are the domestic slaves who were pictured because their masters wanted them to appear in family albuns; second, there are the pictures of black people taken to be sold to foreigners as souvenirs because of their supposed exoticism; third, there are the ethnographic photos intended to illustrate the racist theories then emerging. The last chapter of the dissertation deals with the pictures of convicted criminals collected in two albuns, called the ¿Galeria de condenados¿, seeking to describe the process of composition of such albuns (the photographer was himself a criminal) and the reasons for their making. In all types of pictures analysed, the aim is to explore their different meanings, uses and modes of circulation as well as to seek to understand the ways in which the black people who had their photos taken were able to participate, in some degree, in the composition of their own images / Doutorado / Doutor em Multimeios

Abstract: The Photobiobraphies of elderly presented in this thesis rose from a methodological approch which priorized and gave emphasis to the work of images, though not despising the oral expression. The images, being by themselves, full of memories could, differently from the oral expression, "reflect", "think", "rediscover", "forget" the memory of old people. Based on the visual expression, this reseach was developped in different stages working with sets of 20, 10 and 3 photos. Five Visual Arrangements as well as five Photobiographies are attached to the thesis. The oral and the visual expressions contained in them have their own characteristic that is, share in different ways the same task: they represent an old person's life as a short film that he/she can assemble, disassemble or reassemble. / Doutorado / Doutor em Multimeios

O retrato do cardeal Cristoforo Madruzzo, por Tiziano : o relógio e a política no renascimento / The portrait of the cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo, by Titian : the clock and the politics in the Renaissance

Silva, Isabel Hargrave Gonçalves da, 1987- 24 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Luiz César Marques Filho / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T00:07:32Z (GMT). Enfim, o mecanismo em forma de torre presente no Retrato do Cardeal Cristoforo Madruzzo é, mais do que um objeto, o personagem central da cena, cuja teatralidade brilhantemente construída por Tiziano nos fez percorrer toda essa trajetória / Abstract: From the collection of the Museum of São Paulo, the Portrait of the Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo was painted by Titian in 1552 in his second trip to the imperial city of Augsburg. The cardinal was the host of the Council of Trent, where he was prince-bishop, and which catalyzed the Catholic Reformation and brought new directions to religion, art and the Western history. As prince-bishop of the imperial territory of Trent, Madruzzo acted as ambassador and spokesman of Charles V, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. As Roman cardinal, he served more than five popes throughout almost thirty years. Therefore, Madruzzo acted between the forces and interests of pope and emperor. The portrait, painted by the greatest portraitist of the century - Charles V?s favorite, and who painted several members of the Hapsburg court - allows us to see different aspects of this moment in European history. The cardinal is portrayed in the action of opening the red curtain and revealing the precious mechanical clock that shows an exact hour, in which the date of the painting is engraved. Far from being the first appearance of a mechanical clock on a portrait, this object belongs to the iconographical tradition that attributes moral meanings to it, such as the virtue of temperance, the vanitas and the memento mori. Besides, this object is seen as the symbol of regularity in a world that, with the advent of science, becomes more rational and accurate. The mechanical clock was valued by collectors such as Charles V himself, whose interest was partially due to political texts that associated the action of the ruler with the wheels and engine of a clock. In short, the mechanism in the shape of a tower, present in the Portrait of the Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo is, even more than just an object, the main character of the scene, whose theatricality brilliantly built by Titian made us go through all this course / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestra em História
