South African studio pottery of the later Twentieth century and its Anglo-Oriental epithet

Watt, Ronald 11 1900 (has links)
South African studio pottery of the later twentieth century has consistently been described as ‘Anglo-Oriental’, because it was perceived to adhere to the standard forms of utilitarian wares in plain or subdued colours and decorations, as promoted by the Anglo-Oriental tradition of studio pottery. This dissertation investigates the validity of such an epithet, based on evidence that the pioneer South African studio potters and their successors were exposed to broader pottery influences, and that the oeuvres which they developed reflect what they borrowed, adapted and re-interpreted from such influences. The studio pottery careers and influences of the pioneers Esias Bosch, Hyme Rabinowitz and Bryan Haden are discussed, and the oeuvres of the second generation of studio potters are also investigated. Attention is given to both the ethics and aesthetics of their studio pottery practices. The dissertation further explores whether the era’s studio potters contributed towards the creation of a distinctive South African pottery identity. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Art History)

Abrigos e aldeias : análise dos contextos tecnológicos das ocupações de ceramistas na Cidade de Pedra, Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso / Rockshelters and Settlements : technological contexts analysis through the pottery-makers ocupations of Cidade de Pedra, Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso

Monteiro, Luciane Cabral 22 February 2006 (has links)
A interpretação dos dados leva em conta aspectos de caráter cultural implicados na contextualização dos sítios / This dissertation analyzes the technological context of ceramic-making group occupations on the City of Stone (Cidade de Pedra) area in Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso. The ceramic technology was studied according to criteria related to the features present in the paste and contours of ceramic pottery. The research correlates four open-sky sites and four sites under rocky shelters from an area that is inserted within a wide regional context of ceramic sites. The study of the ceramic pieces found at the sites observes the diversity in technological choices related to pottery production processes, from archaeological occupations where ceramic is associated to the Uru and Tupiguarani traditions, in addition to non-affiliated ceramic sets. Data were interpreted taking into account cultural aspects implied within the context of these sites

Ceramics of Mayapan: a petrographic study

Unknown Date (has links)
The unimpressive archaeological record of the last Mayan pre-Hispanic period has been traditionally interpreted as one of a society in decadence. However, archaeological remains evidencing stylistic homogenization across regions and documentary accounts written during the conquest describing thriving markets and entrepreneurial people have indicated to some a mercantile society linked by extensive networks of communication. Under the weaker political environment of this period, it is expected that a mercantile environment presented more competition and more ceramic producers. This research used petrographic analysis and XRD of the pottery of Mayapan the last Maya capital, to detect ceramic compositional groups, which research has associated with the number of pottery producers. The number of producers is usually taken as a reflection of the degree of competition. This research found multiple compositional groups and the use of fewer ceramic materials that nonetheless are technologically advantageous, suggesting a more competitive and pragmatic society. / by Carmen Giomar Sanchez Fortoul. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Impasto and Bucchero Pottery in the Nicholson Museum, University of Sydney

Starita, Hedy Elise January 2008 (has links)
Master of Philosophy / The following paper will present a study of 76 impasto and bucchero ceramic artefacts that form part of the collection of the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney. These artefacts have not been previously studied in any detail and while some have been published, publication was limited to a brief description. The paper is divided into three sections: impasto, Caeretan stamped ware and bucchero. A preliminary discussion of the ceramic type is followed by a catalogue. The catalogue provides a detailed description, any provenance and publication details, parallels and provides a date and possible geographical context of each vessel.

Cronología del contacto y de encuentros cercanos de Wari

Knobloch, Patricia J. 10 April 2018 (has links)
Chronology of Wari Contact and Close EncountersDetailed stylistic analysis is very important in determining indicators of social interaction that can occur at various levels of society. In the Andes, the distances between distinct populations do not present a problem for social interaction such as trade. Stylistic analysis provides a more detailed sequence of social events and within shorter time spans than radiocarbon dating. The previous emphasis on comparing Wari and Tiwanaku societies has been within the ceremonial art that was probably controlled by the leadership of the elite. Ceremonial art can provide some indicators of social interaction, but probably not with more common activities such as trade or migrations that accompanied the expansion of the religious cults of Wari and Tiwanaku. By applying Menzel's model of stylistic analysis that includes ceremonial, elite and more common pottery to the Tiwanaku artistic expression and by combining the Tiwanaku IV and V phases, perhaps we can discover more indicators that document an ancient and active social interaction between these two populations.
