Investigation and Model Development for Operational Modes of a Unified Power Flow ControllerMahmoodianfard, Forough 30 November 2012 (has links)
The focus of this research is on deriving small signal stability models for different Flexible AC Transmission Systems devices by introducing a simple systematic method that is applicable to any dynamic device.
Two different small signal models for Unified Power Flow Controllers are introduced. One model is called the power control mode and the other model is the voltage control mode. The two models are compared from transient stability point of view to show the necessity of developing both models for UPFC.
The thesis also shows how to derive the small signal stability model of Static Synchronous Compensator, as the shunt branch of UPFC. The small signal stability models of both devices are then validated to ensure the accuracy of the derived models. STATCOM and UPFC power control mode are validated against PSCAD. The UPFC voltage control mode is validated against nonlinear solution of system equations.

Distributed Power Control and Medium Access Control Protocol Design for Multi-Channel Ad Hoc Wireless NetworksAlmotairi, Khaled Hatem January 2012 (has links)
In the past decade, the development of wireless communication technologies has made the use of the Internet ubiquitous. With the increasing number of new inventions and applications using wireless communication, more interference is introduced among wireless devices that results in limiting the capacity of wireless networks. Many approaches have been proposed to improve the capacity. One approach is to exploit multiple channels by allowing concurrent transmissions, and therefore it can provide high capacity. Many available, license-exempt, and non-overlapping channels are the main advantages of using this approach. Another approach that increases the network capacity is to adjust the transmission power; hence, it reduces interference among devices and increases the spatial reuse.
Integrating both approaches provides further capacity. However, without careful transmission power control (TPC) design, the network performance is limited. The first part of this thesis tackles the integration to efficiently use multiple channels with an effective TPC design in a distributed manner.
We examine the deficiency of uncontrolled asymmetrical transmission power in multi-channel ad hoc wireless networks. To overcome this deficiency, we propose a novel distributed transmission power control protocol called the distributed power level (DPL) protocol for multi-channel ad hoc wireless networks. DPL allocates different maximum allowable power values to different channels so that the nodes that require higher transmission power are separated from interfering with the nodes that require lower transmission power. As a result, nodes select their channels based on their minimum required transmission power to reduce interference over the channels. We also introduce two TPC modes for the DPL protocol: symmetrical and asymmetrical. For the symmetrical mode, nodes transmit at the power that has been assigned to the selected channel, thereby creating symmetrical links over any channel. The asymmetrical mode, on the other hand, allows nodes to transmit at a power that can be lower than or equal to the power assigned to the selected channel.
In the second part of this thesis, we propose the multi-channel MAC protocol with hopping reservation (MMAC-HR) for multi-hop ad hoc networks to overcome the multi-channel exposed terminal problem, which leads to poor channel utilization over multiple channels. The proposed protocol is distributed, does not require clock synchronization, and fully supports broadcasting information. In addition, MMAC-HR does not require nodes to monitor the control channel in order to determine whether or not data channels are idle; instead, MMAC-HR employs carrier sensing and independent slow channel hopping without exchanging information to reduce the overhead.
In the last part of this thesis, a novel multi-channel MAC protocol is developed without requiring any change to the IEEE 802.11 standard known as the dynamic switching protocol (DSP) based on the parallel rendezvous approach. DSP utilizes the available channels by allowing multiple transmissions at the same time and avoids congestion because it does not need a dedicated control channel and enables nodes dynamically switch among channels. Specifically, DSP employs two half-duplex interfaces: One interface follows fast hopping and the other one follows slow hopping. The fast hopping interface is used primarily for transmission and the slow hopping interface is used generally for reception. Moreover, the slow hopping interface never deviates from its default hopping sequence to avoid the busy receiver problem. Under single-hop ad hoc environments, an analytical model is developed and validated. The maximum saturation throughput and theoretical throughput upper limit of the proposed protocol are also obtained.

Game-Theoretic Relay Selection and Power Control in Fading Wireless Body Area Networks2015 December 1900 (has links)
The trend towards personalized ubiquitous computing has led to the advent of a new generation of wireless technologies, namely wireless body area networks (WBANs), which connect the wearable devices into the Internet-of-Things.
This thesis considers the problems of relay selection and power control in fading WBANs with energy-efficiency and security considerations.
The main body of the thesis is formed by two papers. Ideas from probability theory are used, in the first paper, to construct a performance measure signifying the energy efficiency of transmission, while in the second paper, information-theoretic principles are leveraged to characterize the transmission secrecy at the wireless physical layer (PHY).
The hypothesis is that exploiting spatial diversity through multi-hop relaying is an effective strategy in a WBAN to combat fading and enhance communication throughput.
In order to analytically explore the problems of optimal relay selection and power control, proper tools from game theory are employed. In particular, non-cooperative game-theoretic frameworks are developed to model and analyze the strategic interactions among sensor nodes in a WBAN when seeking to optimize their transmissions in the uplink.
Quality-of-service requirements are also incorporated into the game frameworks, in terms of upper bounds on the end-to-end delay and jitter incurred by multi-hop transmission, by borrowing relevant tools from queuing theory.
The proposed game frameworks are proved to admit Nash equilibria, and distributed algorithms are devised that converge to stable Nash solutions.
The frameworks are then evaluated using numerical simulations in conditions approximating actual deployment of WBANs. Performance behavior trade-offs are investigated in an IEEE 802.15.6-based ultra wideband WBAN considering various scenarios. The frameworks show remarkable promise in improving the energy efficiency and PHY secrecy of transmission, at the expense of an admissible
increase in the end-to-end latency.

Nowadays, the wind power generation is the fastest growing electric power source in the world. Nevertheless, depending on the management of this kind of generation, it may cause significant impact in the power system. In this work, a modeling of the main components of wind power generation was performed, particularly of variable speed wind turbines with doubly fed induction generators, aiming to apply control strategies for its operation and to study its functional characteristics. Methods to regulate the active power generated by variable speed wind turbines, and to regulate the active power of wind farms composed of several of this turbines, are proposed with the objective to allow an increase in the level of penetration of wind generation in the power systems. Using the elaborated modeling, rigorous computational simulations of operation of these types of power stations, operating with the proposed methods, were accomplished. The obtained results in these simulations shows that it is possible to considerably minimize the wind power generation impacts, obtaining attributions similarly to conventional energy producers. It is observed that the proposed methods allows an operational flexibility of wind power generation, enabling a better management according to the new requirement of the power system operators.

The work presented in this thesis focuses on the satellite communication protocol named “Enhanced Spread Spectrum Aloha” (E-SSA) and developed in 2009 by the European Space Agency (ESA). The E-SSA structure, based on fully asynchronous random access, perfectly copes with low-duty cycle bursty transmissions adapted to satellite messaging. High performance in terms of spectral efficiency is possible by exploiting iterative successive interference cancellation (SIC) while keeping minimal complexity at the terminal side. If the first exploitation of the protocol concerned mobile applications in S-band, it has been extended to fleets of fixed terminals in other frequency bandwidths (C, Ku or Ka). Starting from these two scenarios, this thesis proposes different innovations to further boost the E-SSA global system capacity. These technical solutions particularly include a fine optimization of protocol parameters and new power control algorithms.

apresentados nesta dissertação, incluindo a operação do GIDA durante afundamento
Wind energy is gaining interest in the last years as one of the most important
renewable sources of energy due to its ecofriendly nature. One of the main
components of the wind energy system is the wind generator, which must be able to
work with variable wind speed and have to be connected directly to the grid even during
faults, like symmetrical sag.
This work presents a proposal of a direct power control deadbeat for Doubly-Fed
Induction Generator (DFIG), where its stator is connected directly to the grid and its
rotor is connected to the grid trough a bidirectional converter. The proposed controller
is designed using the mathematical discretized dynamic model of DFIG, with the goal
to withstand its operation during sag with no crowbar and avoiding damage to the
induction machine.
The DFIG and the direct power controller deadbeat were simulated using the suite
Simulink® from Matlab® and the results are presented in this work, including the DFIG
operation during symmetrical sag.
For assuring the performance of the controller during sag, practical results with the
proposed direct power controlled were performed using a test bench and the final
results validate the correct design of the proposed deadbeat direct power controller.

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / The purpose of this work is to present an active and reactive power flow controller
applied to inverter paralelism with the stiff AC system. An additional loop is implemented
into a conventional control loop based on the characteristic curves of active power versus
frequency and reactive power versus voltage. This loop uses the active power variation as
feedback to generate the load angle of the voltage reference of the inverter, when it is
connected in parallel with the electric network. As a consequence, the active and reactive
transitory power oscillations are atenuated, without producing undesirable colateral effects
as significative voltage and reactive power variations presented in the utilization of PSS
(Power System Stabilizer), another technique used to improve the system damping,
[Martins, M. P., 2004]. A dynamic model of the system based on the small signal analysis
is presented. The root locus graphics, showing the system poles under parametric variations
are also presented, allowing the analysis of the system stability. The simulation results and
the experimental ones using a laboratory prototype with and without the additional loop are
showed, which validate the obtained small signal model.
amortecimento do sistema, [Martins, M. P., 2004].

Orientador: Prof. Dr. Alfeu J. Sguarezi Filho / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal do ABC.
A dependência
velocidade variável do rotor.
escala pequena disponível no LEPS .
In this research two new control algorithms for a wind power system based on the Double
Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) are proposed. The wind energy system is operating under
normal conditions i.e. fixed rotor speed, variable rotor speed and under variations in DFIG
parameters. The proposed controllers are named Direct Power Control (DPC) Deadbeat
and Long¿range Generalized Predictive Control (GPC¿dq). The DPC calculates the sup-
plied voltage vector to the rotor to ensure that the active and reactive power reaches their
desired reference values. The algorithm dependence on parameters that have to be tuned
by means of heuristic procedures is zero when its compared with the Proportional¿Integral
(PI) Control, being necessary only estimate the Gc coeficient. The second controller evalu-
ates the DFIG predictive rotor currents, using a defined long-range prediction horizon and
thus obtain the new rotor voltages that have to be injected to controlling the active and
reactive stator powers. The GPC¿dq needs a parameter for been tuned, this is called as a
weighting factor and is a part of the quadratic cost function that has to be minimized, to
obtain an optimal value of the rotor voltages. Tests are done using Matlab¿Simulink for
the two controllers operating under normal operating conditions, ie: a fixed speed test and
a variable rotor speed test. The same tests are repeated using a small scale prototype avai-
lable in the LEPS. The dependence of the two algorithms on the parameter variations was
also investigated, as well as the influence of the errors in the estimation of these parame-
ters, obtaining a superior performance for the long¿range generalized predictive controller
over the other one.
