This dissertation presents a study on single-phase Delta-UPS topological alternatives for low power and low cost applications. The proposed topology has a DC-DC converter connected between the shunt inverter and the battery bank/series converter DC terminals, respectively. This modification will allow the downsizing of the DC battery bank as well as the removing of the series converter transformer. Two different topologies of the DC DC converter were investigated and a comparative study among them will be accomplished. Simulation results are presented and experimental results will be included to validate the proposed study.

This thesis presents an strategy to control a two–phase, three-wire shunt active power filter (APF). This APF can be implemented as an extra functionality of the embedded voltage source converter in the propulsion system of an electric vehicle (EV). This application would be useful in the compensation of residential and commercial electrical installations fed by a two–phase three–wire grid connection. The working principle of shunt two-phase APF is presented and its mathematical models are also treated. Concepts of the instantaneous powers p and q, called single-phase p–q theory, are reviewed. The relationship between these quantities and the conventional active and reactive powers is discussed. Then, some adaptations are done in the implementation of such theory. The main one is related to the implementation method of singlephase αβ transformations. After these adaptations, the modified p–q theory is used to described the developed algorithm to control the two–phase APF. The adopted control strategy consists of compensating all current harmonics and reactive power, as well as equalizing currents in involved phases. Simulation results are presented to show the APF operation in steady-state and under load changes. Yet, some experimental results are presented to show the APF in operation. The obtained results validate the presented working principle and the control strategy proposed in this thesis.

The present paper proposes a system to manage, control and monitor a group of LED luminaires of a street lighting system, being able to control the light intensity of the luminaire and monitoring the power consumption, detection of pedestrians, fault conditions, environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity. Additionally, the system contains a voltage sensor coupled to the grid in order to monitor and manage the power quality parameters. Basically, the system can be divided in three essential parts. The first one regards the smart module, called in this work as SM, which has the responsibility to sensing the parameters stemming from power grid as well as luminaire. The second part is the control module (CM), which has the aim to coordinate the data received from each smart module, storing and subsequently sending the data to the supervisory system. Besides, the control module also has temperature and humidity sensors in order to check and register environmental conditions, providing, in this way, reliability of the measured data. The supervisory system (SS) consists of the final part of the proposed system and it is responsible to save the data in a local memory, to analyze and to monitor problems or even possible faults and sending commands to each CM and/or a respective SM. With the aim to evaluate the proposed system, it was performed experiments to demonstrate the system operation as well as the quality analysis capability. Due to the energy savings potential provided by the technology, it was also studied the economic feasibility of the prototype, aiming a future commercial product. The results have shown that the proposed system is scalable, flexible and efficient.

Methodology for monitoring voltage SAGs and SWELLs in power systems.

Carlos Frederico Meschini Almeida 14 February 2007 (has links)
This dissertation presents a methodology based on Genetic Algorithms and Fuzzy Mathematical Programming to determine the optimum number of power quality monitors and the locations they should be installed to measure Voltage Sags and Swells in transmission power networks. The methodology developed represents a tool for planning power networks, because it indicates the best way to allocate the power quality monitors, considering economical constraints. Similar to this, the methodology also determines the best configuration for a monitoring system when there are important busses to monitor and the number of monitors available is lower than the minimal needed to accomplish completely Observability. The work presented here also represents an important Genetic Algorithms application. With fuzzy mathematical programming it easily allows the definition of aspects to be considered in the monitoring problem and quickly suggests the best way to attend different objectives and operational restrictions. In order to validate the developed model proposed in this dissertation three electric power networks are assessed to determine the minimum number of power quality monitors as well as the locations where these devices should be installed. The levels of Redundancy and Observability are presented as well as the formulations used to achieve the results.

Elkvalitet i industrinät : Snabba spänningsvariationerns påverkan på elektrisk utrustning / Power quality in industrial networks : Voltage fluctuations effect on electrical equipment

Sköld, Joakim January 2021 (has links)
Även tidigare forskning behandlas i denna studie. / Power quality depends on several different factors, such as voltage sags, voltage dips, voltage fluctuation (flicker), rapid voltage changes, transients, harmonics or voltage asymmetry. To improve the power quality in an industrial network one common mitigation is reactive power compensation.     This study examines the possible effects of voltage fluctuations on electronic equipment, both in terms of use and service life. Furthermore, Sandvik's power quality in their industrial network is also examined, where electronic equipment is perceived to have become defective early in its service life. To improve the power quality the goal is to find suitable mitigation for the arc furnace in the industrial network. In this study, the power quality at Sandvik was compared with the power quality from similar industries and analyzed based on current power quality standards. Through interviews with staff at Sandvik and Vattenfall data was provided regarding which type of equipment that may have been affected and information on how electricity network companies experience the impact from industries on power quality. Previous research is also covered in this study. The result shows that the power quality at Sandvik is affected when the arc furnace is active. The flicker level is the power quality disturbance that repeatedly exceeds the norm at the connection point of equipment that has become defective at an early stage. Previous research shows that the use of equipment can be affected by voltage fluctuations, for example in the form of minor speed changes in motors. The comparison between Sandvik and the similar industries reveals that industrials networks with an arc furnace often is affected by high flicker levels. By installing a reactive power compensator, in form of a STATCOM, the high flicker level of Sandvik’s industrial network can be mitigated. There is not enough research to be able to draw definite conclusions if voltage fluctuation affects the lifespan of electronic equipment. However, there is research that indicates that this is the case. The data collected in this study also do not lead to any definite conclusions regarding this but clarifies that current test procedures on equipment immunity to voltage fluctuations cannot be compared with the actual conditions in an industrial network. The conclusion is also that more studies on the subject are required.

Rozptýlená výroba a jej vplyv na kvalitu dodávok elektrickej energie / Distributed Generation and its Influence on Power Quality

Bernáth, František January 2014 (has links)
This work deals with the deployment of distributed power sources into the electric power grid. The nature of these sources causes that the massive integration may experience problems with power quality in the local context, and also overall reliability of supply in the range of interconnected power systems may be endangered. Work is focused on local voltage quality problems with special emphasis on analysis and design of tools (e.g. reactive power compensation units of power plants or dynamic voltage control by transformers 110/22kV) for voltage control in power distribution systems. These tools should be used as a part of uniform concept of voltage control. The proposed concept is involved.

Vyhodnocení a porovnání změn kvality elektrické energie z více měřených bodů / Evaluation and Comparison of Power Quality Changes from Multiple Measured Points

Koštialik, Marek January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deal with the description of electrical energy quality in low voltage. A test data model is created in the thesis which can automatically evaluate the state of the quality of electric energy in terms of higher harmonic voltages in the MATLAB programming environment. To verify the correct design of the model, two possible views of simulated data are created in the form of tables and graphical dependencies. An user interface is created for more complex control of each model states of the data being considered.
