Development of a low temperature geothermal organic rankine cycle standard.

Taylor, Leighton John January 2015 (has links)
The growth in renewable electricity generation is forecast to continue as fossil fuel levels decrease and carbon dioxide emissions are penalized. The growth in geothermal is becoming constrained as conventional high-temperature sources are fully exploited. Geothermal can be a cost competitive base load power source. Governments and utilities are looking at the potential of electricity generation from low temperature geothermal resources for future development. This technology, unlike the high and medium temperature, is not mature and there are a number of companies looking at entering the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) market. This thesis aims to provide a necessary step for reliable commercial develop this technology by developing the first draft of a low temperature geothermal ORC standard. The standard outlines the critical stages of a geothermal ORC project as the Prospecting stage; Pre-Feasibility stage, Feasibility stage, and the Detailed Design stage. The standard is unlike other standards that are used to design one component; this standard guides the engineers though the various critical steps of the ORC design to correctly assess the geothermal resource and to inform design and investment decisions. The standard provides particular guidance on critical factors in ORC design, primarily the working fluid selection and component selection limitations. Experienced industry engineers have provided advice and insight regarding the critical design points and processes. The draft standard was reviewed by a number of geothermal industry engineers who have worked with large scale, conventional ORCs. They each commented on the standard from their prospective in the industry and gave general feedback was that it is a technically relevant standard that can be used as a potential start point to develop a new standard for the low temperature binary ORC industry. The final draft standard has been submitted to the ISO for consideration. This thesis first sets out the general background on the state of the art and the industry for lowtemperature binary ORC power plants, and provides the review assessment of the standard draft. However, the bulk of the thesis is the standard itself. The standard represents a substantial contribution to the mechanical and thermal systems engineering field.

Waste-to-Energy in Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia : A Pre-feasibility study on suitable Waste-to-Energy techniques in the Kutai Kartanegara region

Torstensson, Johan, Gezelius, Jon January 2015 (has links)
The thesis outlined in this report is a pre-feasibility study of the potential to use waste-to-energy technology in the region Kutai Kartanegara, Borneo, Indonesia. The project is a collaboration between the Kutai Kartanegara government, Uppsala University, the Swedish University of Agricultural sciences and the technology consulttancy Sweco. The current waste management system in Kutai Kartanegara consists of landfills in the cities and open burnings and dumping in the lesser developed sub-districts. This is a growing problem both environmentally and logistically. The electrification in the sub-districts is sometimes as low as 17 % and access to electricity is often limited to a couple of hours per day. The current electricity production in the region is mainly from fossil fuels. Data was collected during a two month long field study in Tenggarong, the capital of Kutai Kartanegara. From the collected data, various waste-to-energy systems and collection areas were simulated in Matlab. Results from the simulations show that a system using both a waste incineration and biogas plant would be the best solution for the region. The chosen system is designed to handle a total of 250,000 tons of waste annually, collected from Tenggarong and neighbouring districts. The system will provide between 155 and 200 GWh electricity and between 207 and 314 GWh of excess heat energy annually. Some of this is used in a district heating system with an absorption-cooling machine. The system investment cost is around 42.5 MUSD and it is expected to generate an annual profit of 16 MUSD. The recommended solution will decrease the emissions of CO2-equivalents compared to the current waste system and fossil electricity production with 50%. The results in the study clearly show that there are both economic and environmental potential for waste-to-energy technologies in the region. But the waste management and infrastructure has to be improved to be able to utilize these technologies. By implementing waste-to-energy technologies, the supplied waste can be seen as a resource instead of a problem. This would give incentives for further actions and investments regarding waste management.

Pre-feasibility Study of a Waste to Energy Plant in Chisinau, Moldova

Karlsson, Linus, Linderholm Jönsson, Thomas January 2012 (has links)
The thesis outlined in this report has been done as a sub-project in cooperation between the municipalities Borlänge in Sweden and Chisinau in Moldova. The project aimed to explore the region's economic and environmental opportunities for waste incineration with energy recovery, also known as Waste to Energy. At present, the solution to the waste situation is unmonitored landfills with smaller sorting operations. Environmentally, this is a poor solution and although there are plans for change, no specific strategy has been presented. Another important issue is Moldova's dependence on foreign produced energy. The country's energy system is dependent on imported natural gas, and only a small part of the country's electrical energy is produced domestically. What makes the waste to energy so interesting for this region is that it contributes to an improvement in both of these issues by using the waste as fuel to reduce energy dependency. The study has been done without specific waste composition data for the Chisinau region. With this in mind a dynamic model in several steps has been made, designed to obtain new results depending on what waste composition is specified. The results of this study show that implementation of a waste incineration plant in the Chisinau energy system is economically and environmentally feasible, given the current conditions. The proposed plant is designed to annually handle 400,000 tonnes of waste, and would with the assumed waste composition deliver 560 GWh of district heat and 260 GWh of electric energy. This production provides an annual profit of 31.6 M €, which gives a positive net present value after the project amortization. Compared with the city's current solution with landfills and gas turbines, the project also provides a significant environmental improvement. During the plant's design lifetime, greenhouse gas emissions are 53.9%, and only 6.8% with the assumption that only a portion of the carbon content of the waste is of fossil origin.

Simulação e dimensionamento ótimo de sistemas autônomos híbridos com reservatórios hidrelétricos

Vega, Fausto Alfredo Canales January 2015 (has links)
Global interest and investments in renewable energy sources has increased considerably in recent years. These technologies have the advantage of using locally available resources, reducing dependence on external energy sources. However, most renewable energy technologies suffer from an intermittent characteristic due to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of the natural resources needed for power generation. Energy Storage is the most used technique to buffer this intermittency. For large-scale applications, hydropower reservoirs (of conventional and pumped storage plants) are the most mature and the most widely employed technology for electricity storage in the form of potential energy. For this reason, a hydropower reservoir is a suitable option to consider including in an autonomous hybrid power system. According to many authors, the HOMER model (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables) is the most widely used tool in research studies related to simulation and optimal design of this type of systems. This thesis presents some procedures to define, as a pre-feasibility assessment, the optimal configuration (in terms of Net Present Cost) and set of feasible designs of an autonomous hybrid power system that includes intermittent renewable energy sources and hydropower reservoirs. The HOMER software is used for simulating and evaluating the hybrid power systems of the hypothetical case studies, used to validate the proposed methods. These examples were created based on real data related to the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The procedures described can be adapted to any other region of the world where exists a site suitable for the construction of hydropower reservoirs, along with available data regarding intermittent renewable sources and generation costs. Besides defining the optimal configuration and the set of feasible designs, the results indicate that the procedures explained could help in the definition of the best use of a site with hydropower potential. Likewise, these methods can also be used to estimate how much excess electricity can be recovered by means of pumped storage hydropower. The results show that the optimal system design depends on many factors such as hydrological constraints, average load to serve and energy cost of each source.
