No. of bitstreams: 0 / A avaliação metrológica da incerteza da medição, apesar de estar normalizada internacionalmente (ISO-GUM, 1995) desde a metade dos anos 90, só agora está se popularizando nas indústrias, nas escolas técnicas e de engenharia. Em algumas áreas, como na metrologia dimensional, está avançada e em outras, como na medição de variáveis de processos industriais tais como vazão, pressão e temperatura, ainda está numa fase intermediara. Um dos principais entraves para essa popularização é a falta de padronização da nomenclatura nas especificações técnicas dos instrumentos de medição, onde se declara a incerteza, por exemplo, de 1% de ?acurácia? sem definir se é percentual da leitura, da faixa calibrada ou da faixa máxima. Ou ainda, sem definir se a probabilidade de abrangência é 68, 95 ou 99,7%. Esse trabalho entra nesse cenário com a pretensão de clarificar e simplificar esses conceitos, começando pelo histórico da evolução do pensamento que transformou a incerteza numa variável quantitativa com sua avaliação efetuada de uma maneira padronizada e internacionalmente aceita. Em seguida é feita uma descrição conceitual sucinta do método ISO-GUM e também é desvendado o intrincado jogo de palavras e fórmulas das declarações de incertezas dos fabricantes de instrumentos de medição. Com o domínio desses conceitos, partimos para efetuar dois exemplos numéricos de avaliação metrológica de incertezas na medição de vazão, usando um conjuntos de fórmulas semelhantes Ás publicadas por renomados fabricantes de instrumentos de medição. No primeiro exemplo usando a medição de vazão por pressão diferencial com placa de orifício e no segundo usando um medidor volumétrico, nos quais são identificadas e quantificadas todas as potenciais fontes de incerteza. Limiting behaviours in physics: From Duality to Super-resolution

In this thesis, we discuss several phenomena exhibiting `limiting behaviour' in physics. This includes the duality principle, delegated quantum computation, and super-resolution. The duality principle places a limit on the coexistence of wave and particle behaviours. We develop a framework that explains apparent violations of this principle while staying within the scope of quantum mechanics. In addition, we relate the duality principle to the sub-fidelity and weak-values. We also show that the maximum recoverable coherence of a qubit has a sharp transition from 0 to 1 when we have access to half of the environment to which the qubit is correlated. Delegated quantum computation consists of a computational weak client who wishes to delegate a complex quantum computation to a powerful quantum server. We develop a new protocol for delegated quantum computation requiring less quantum power than its predecessor. Finally, we develop and test a new theory for eigenmode super-resolution.

Gibbs/Equilibrium Measures for Functions of Multidimensional Shifts with Countable Alphabets

Consider a multidimensional shift space with a countably infinite alphabet, which serves in mathematical physics as a classical lattice gas or lattice spin system. A new definition of a Gibbs measure is introduced for suitable real-valued functions of the configuration space, which play the physical role of specific internal energy. The variational principle is proved for a large class of functions, and then a more restrictive modulus of continuity condition is provided that guarantees a function's Gibbs measures to be a nonempty, weakly compact, convex set of measures that coincides with the set of measures obeying a form of the DLR equations (which has been adapted so as to be stated entirely in terms of specific internal energy instead of the Hamiltonians for an interaction potential). The variational equilibrium measures for a such a function are then characterized as the shift invariant Gibbs measures of finite entropy, and a condition is provided to determine if a function's Gibbs measures have infinite entropy or not. Moreover the spatially averaged limiting Gibbs measures, i.e. constructive equilibria, are shown to exist and their weakly closed convex hull is shown to coincide with the set of true variational equilibrium measures. It follows that the "pure thermodynamic phases", which correspond to the extreme points in the convex set of equilibrium measures, must be constructive equilibria. Finally, for an even smoother class of functions a method is presented to construct a compatible interaction potential and it is checked that the two different structures generate the same sets of Gibbs and equilibrium measures, respectively.

Pareto principle in software : Feature usage and software development in relation to the Pareto principle

The works of Vilfredo Pareto and the power law that originally was meant to describe the uneven distribution of wealth in Italy, have turned out to be applicable to describe lots of other areas and fields. This thesis aims to investigate the Pareto principle in relation to software, mainly looking into websites and applications, and seeing how the usage of different features is spread among each other. The work was targeted towards four apps within the travel category to investigate if the Pareto principle is valid within those apps. A questionnaire was sent out to investigate the current state of knowledge about the Pareto principle by people within the software development industry. Then traffic from Malmö University’s website was analyzed and showed a likeness to the Pareto principle. Lastly, interviews were conducted to collect user data regarding the usage of features in four mobile applications. The data that were collected from the interviews showed that not a certain set of features stod for the majority of usage. In conclusion, we state that there may be some validity to using the Pareto principle to describe software usage, further work and more data collecting would be necessary to be certain. Being aware of the Pareto principle in relation to software development could help you with structuring your work and be more efficient when developing since putting resources such as time and money into features that would not be used would be resource poorly spent.

A joint optical flow and principal component analyisis approach for motion detection from outdoor videos

Optical flow and its extensions have been widely used in motion detection and computer vision. In the study, principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to analyze optical flows for better motion detection performance. The joint optical flow and PCA approach can efficiently detect moving objects and suppress small turbulence. It is effective in both static and dynamic background. It is particularly useful for motion detection from outdoor videos with low quality and small moving objects. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach outperforms other existing methods by extracting the moving objects more completely with lower false alarms. Saving strategies are developed to reduce computational complexity of optical flow calculation and PCA. Graphic processing unit (GPU)-based parallel implementation is developed, which shows excellent speed up performance.
