A cross-linguistic analysis of finite rasing constructions.

Ademola-Adeoye, Feyisayo Fehintola. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis provides and discusses a comprehensive collection of empirical data that show that many languages of the world manifest long A-movement of the subjects of embedded finite clauses to the subject position (Hyperraising) or object position (Hyper-ECM) of the main clause. The main theoretical claim of the thesis is that all these instances of long A-movement leave behind resumptive pronouns and should therefore be analysed on a par with related Copy Raising and Copy ECM constructions. My thesis therefore demonstrates that resumption is not restricted to Abar movement contexts, but is also attested in A-movement constructions. Instead of the various language-particular analyses previously proposed in the literature, the thesis focuses on those aspects of long A-movement that all respective constructions in the different languages have in common and therefore provides a unified crosslinguisic analysis of long A-movement constructions. An important empirical generalisation, first noted by Ura (1994), which is empirically supported by the data discussed in this thesis, is that if a language has Hyperraising or Hyper-ECM, it is also a pro-drop language. On the basis of this generalisation, it is argued that Hyperraising and Hyper-ECM constructions involve the use of resumptive pro in the embedded subject position, while languages with Copy Raising and Copy ECM use overt pronouns. Apart from this difference, it is argued that these Amovement constructions are identical in all crucial respects. Furthermore, it is claimed that agreement inside the embedded finite clauses from which long A-movement takes place is indicative of the ability of embedded T to license nominative case on the embedded subject. Hence, no deviation from standard Minimalist assumptions is required. It is suggested that the role of the resumptive subject pronoun is to receive the case assigned by the probing T-head inside the embedded clause. It is also argued that it is the existence of a resumptive pronoun which causes the coreferential subject DP to be without case, which in turn creates a context in which long A-movement of this DP becomes both necessary and possible. This analysis is based on the idea that at first merge, the raised subject is merged with the null/overt resumptive pronoun in the embedded subject position to form one vii complex constituent (which is known in the literature as a „big? DP). While the pronoun remains in the embedded subject position to absorb the case in the embedded finite clause, the raised subject is attracted into the matrix subject position to absorb the case in the matrix clause. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2011

Sintaxe da posição do verbo e mudança gramatical na história do português Europeu / The syntax of verb position and grammatical change in the history of European portuguese

The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relation between the syntax of verb position and the properties of XP fronting in the history of European Portuguese, looking specifically at the period of time which goes from the 16th up to the 19th century. The framework adopted is the minimalist version of the Principles and Parameters Theory (see Chomsky 1995 and subsequent works), using the ideas of the cartographic project as a basis for the proposals of clause structure, in special those concerning to the left periphery of the sentence (see, in particular, Rizzi 1997). Since this dissertation also deals with aspects of linguistic change, we will follow theoretical assumptions presented in Kroch (1989, 1994, 2000) and Lightfoot (1991, 1999, 2006). We will present evidences that, until the end of the 17th century, Portuguese manifested a behavior similar to that of Verb Second (V2) languages concerning the property of verb movement, but with striking differences in relation to the possibilities of XP fronting. In our analysis, this derives from the way the syntax of verb position relates to the requirements of the periphery of the sentence, in particular those concerning the checking of the EPP associated to the phi features of the Fin head. As for the 18th and the 19th centuries, we will show that Portuguese already instantiated the syntax of the modern language, without presenting the properties of a V2 language. This result is in line with different works, which, investigating other syntactic aspects of the diachrony of European Portuguese, show that, from the 18th on, there is the beginning of the contemporary grammatical system / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

Learnability and the lexicon in second language acquisition : Chinese learners' acquisition of English argument structure

Juffs, Alan January 1993 (has links)
This thesis investigates the knowledge of semantics-syntax correspondences in second language acquisition (SLA) within the Principles and Parameters framework. A parameter of semantic structure is proposed to account for crosslinguistic syntactic differences between two previously unrelated, and superficially distinct, verb classes: change of state locatives and 'psychological' verbs. Chinese and English contrast in terms of the parameter setting. Experimental evidence indicates that adult Chinese learners of English L2 initially transfer parameter settings, but are able to reset the proposed parameter. However, they only acquire L2 lexical properties and concomitant syntactic privileges with ease when L2 input adds a representation to their grammar. When positive L2 input should pre-empt overgeneralizations based on representation transferred from the L1, it is shown that L1 influence may persist until quite advanced stages of acquisition. The implications of the results are discussed for the parameter setting model of SLA.

Essas últimas parecem permanecer disponíveis na forma de conhecimento lingüístico consciente / Abstract: This dissertation investigates the Compounding Parameter (CP) as formulated by Snyder (1995) and its role in the acquisition/learning of English by Brazilian learners. The positive setting of the CP [+] allows a given language to freely mark any open-class lexical item as [+Affixal] and consequently trigger a cluster of related properties, namely N+N compounding (N+N), resultative structures (RS), V+Particle (V+PRT) constructions, double object constructions (DOC) and preposition stranding (PrepStr), among others. Upon the apparent existence of structures in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) that resemble some of those in English, namely RS and PrepStr, I set out to explore the following questions: (i) does the comparison between Brazilian Portuguese and English offer evidence that all the properties attributed to the positive setting of the CP, or part of them, follow from the same parameter? (ii) assuming the existence of this parameter, are there any similarities between L1 and L2 acquisition as far as the CP is concerned? After the comparison and analysis of the five related properties, I found out that none of the structures, even the superficially identical looking ones, resulted from the positive setting of the CP. N+N in BP is a result of non recursive N+N compounding with lexically rigid meaning; the RSs found in BP are semantic resultatives that do not correspond to the syntactic versions of the CP-positively valued ones; the V+Particle and DOC constructions are nonexistent; finally, BP offers prepositionless structures that result from a different array of items specified in the numeration, differently from the Reanalysis of V+Preposition, which allows the preposition to be stranded in English. As for the acquisition of the five CP properties, I suggest, after analyzing the data of an experimental study, that the L2 acquisition processes differ from those of the L1 in that the non-nuclear properties (DOC and PrepStr) along with the nuclear property N+N seem to have been learned via formal instruction (ordered input, explicit positive and negative evidence) and remain available as conscious linguistic knowledge. The nuclear properties (RS and V+PRT), on the other hand, seem to have been acquired by the highly proficient L2 English speakers, probably via immersion / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

A tese confirma a hipótese do "bilingüismo universal" de Roeper (1999), não apenas para o estágio inicial, mas para os estágios intermediário e final / Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the acquisition of the null subject in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) as a second language (L2) by native adult speakers of English and Italian in a situation of total immersion. The research was developed within the framework of the Principles and Parameters Theory (Chomsky 1981, 1986) and the Minimalist Program, Chomsky, 1993, 1995,2000). The research attempted to investigate whether the L2 leaders have access to Universal Grammar (UG) and what the form of that access would be. The results of the analysis confirmed a) the hypothesis of direct access to UG, through the use of the prcxlrop parameter's default value = null or overt subjects + the one-person agreement verbal form, in the production of English and Italian speakers in the initial phase of acquisition and, b) the hypothesis of indirect access to UG through LI, in the production of the English and Italian speakers in the non-initial phase of acquisition. Considering that prodrop languages do not constitute a single type, it was hypothesized that, based upon data from the input, the leamers would present the prcxlrop of BP, starting by the acquisition of the agreement in that language, which was confirmed. The analysis confirms the "universal bilingualism" hypothesis (Roeper, 1999), not only for the initial stage of acquisition, but also for the intermediate and final stages / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística
