The implementation of the Bologna Process in Kazakhstan higher education : views from within

Tampayeva, Gulnara Y. January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis I examine the question: how do Kazakhstan academics respond to the reforms of higher education (HE) carried out as part of Europeanisation? I study the local academics' accounts of the process of implementation of the Bologna Process and of wider Western education standards within local post-Soviet practice, since the beginning of the twenty-first century. This local policy implementation is examined within the framework of educational policy borrowing, grounded in works by Steiner-Khamsi, Silova, and Phillips. Thirty-eight interviews were conducted in four HE institutions in different regions of Kazakhstan and analysed through the application of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on work by van Dijk and Fairclough. Using the method of CDA, I explore how power relationships and abuses of power play out between the educational authority and the academics in the politically driven reform environment, and how academics respond to this in their views of the reforms. I found that participants overall are critical of the reform process. They respond with three discourses, identified as nostalgia and loss, progress and modernity and chaotic reform. While the discourse of nostalgia implicitly connects to the 'better' Soviet education, as an ideological belief inherited from the past, and the discourse of progress reflects the spread of the ideology of European modernity, they both appear in connection to the central discourse of chaotic reformation. I found that chaos, which is a prime characteristic of the reforms in Kazakhstan HE, is linked to clashes between political/educational motivations and Soviet/Western approaches. These findings support my main argument that the specific post-Soviet context should be taken into account in studies of education in the 'Second World'. These 'context models' are influential on how Western standards are implemented in the reality of post-Soviet education.

Biomimicry For Sustainability: An Educational Project In Sustainable Product Design

Bakirlioglu, Yekta 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The notion of sustainability has become an extensive area of research ever since the term emerged in the late 1980s, due to the negative effects of unsustainable production and consumption patterns on environmental stewardship, social equity and economic development. There have been various approaches developed for product design and education within the context sustainability. Biomimicry is one of those approaches, and its implications for product design education have recently started to be explored. In this study, an educational tool - Biomimicry Sketch Analysis (BSA) - was developed and integrated into the idea-generation phase of an educational design project at the undergraduate level in the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU). This integration is analyzed throughout the graduate thesis study, to understand and explore the implications of the biomimicry approach for sustainability in product design education. The educational tool within this approach was found as influential among the third year industrial design students for the idea-generation phase, yet the results of this study included both pros and cons for the incorporation of the BSA exercise.

Fios do novelo: crianças negras, educação e trabalho em Vassouras, 1871 a 1910 / Strands of yarn: black kids, education and work in Vassouras, from 1871 until 1910

Alexandre Ribeiro Neto 21 January 2015 (has links)
Our work analyzes the process of education of black children in Vassouras from 1871 until 1910. Communication in Learner-Centered Classrooms : An explorative study of the communication patterns in two classrooms / Kommunikation i elevcentrerad klassrum : En explorativ studie av kommunikationsmönster i två klassrum

Haliti, Donjeta January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to explore teachers’ orchestration of the class communication during teaching and to show whether the communication can be explained by frame factors. This study is a multiple case study of two physics teachers – one public and one private school teacher - using observational and interview data to illustrate and analyze their communication/talk process in the classroom. Implications are drawn for the way that they develop dialogue, which is further explored in regards to identified frame factors. Data collection was complemented with field notes and audio-recordings. The observations served for identifying the communication process. Interviews were used to develop the understanding of the teacher’s background and their beliefs on teaching for further strengthening the evidence for the findings. Transcripts were developed for detailed qualitative analysis of selected episodes of their communicative approaches.Concepts and theories on the importance of the communication process for reflective thinking and a learner-centered classroom along with the frame factors theory aid the construction of the research and are linked to the findings. The study provides insight on the frequency of elicitation of dialogic communication encouraging of reflective thought occurring at recurrent rate by the private school teacher during lecturing. The findings showed that frame factors steering the two teacher’s elicitation of communication were the curriculum, the teachers’ educational opportunities, external support and their ideologies. Findings suggest that reverting the teachers discourse fully towards an environment of dialogic communication encouraging of reflective thought - an aim of the Kosovo Curriculums - require additional sustenance and a profounder inquiry of the influence of teachers ideologies and how it can be diminished. Furthermore, an assessment of the curriculums implementation in classrooms and its limiting aspect of providing dialogically organized instruction is necessary along with assessment of the trainings offered to teachers.

Aptariamas konstruktyvizmu grindžiamo mokymosi aiškinimas (konstrukcionizmo pedagoginė teorija), atskleidžiami esminiai konektyvizmo principai ir užduotys, su kuriomis turi susidurti besimokantysis skaitmeninio amžiaus eroje. Pristatomi matematikos mokymo filosofijos (matematikos filosofijos) keliami klausimai. Galiausiai ieškoma atsakymų į klausimus: kokį vaidmenį kompiuterinės technologijos, pastarojo meto interneto tecnologijos ir paslaugos atlieka matematikos mokymo bei mokymosi proceso metu, kaip jį paliečia, kokias galimybes atveria, kaip keičia šį procesą. / This theme paper analyses the phenomenon of information technologies in relation with the present knowledge-based society and the Web technologies in the process of education. The concept of learning process is discussed in the age of technological change. The constructivism based learning (constructionism learning theory) is presented in this paper too. Besides this, the most essential principles and tasks of connectivism which a learner is supposed to deal with in the digital surroundings are being analysed as well. Moreover, the issues raised by the phylosophy of mathematics education (and the phylosophy of mathematics) are also introduced in this paper. Finally, the reply search to the following issues – what role do computer-based technologies, modern internet technologies and services play in the process of teaching and learning mathematics; how do the above mentioned factors influence a process of education; what are the perspectives of the mentioned processes; how do the discussed issues change the process of teaching and learning mathematics – is analysed in the paper.
