Vehicle development and dimensional optimization - applying and validating GD&T ASME Y 14.5 M.

Edson Maldonado Peres 16 March 2007 (has links)
All assembly dimensional and geometric variation are based on geometries stack ups by profiles, locating holes and pins on fixtures. There is a direct relation between the number of stack ups, the final variation and geometry of assembly components. The probability of variation is directly related to the geometry dependency, that are circumstances of dimensional consequences for product and process. Based on this concept, process control is related to the process capability and product performance, and vice-versa (based on a installed process, the product must be robust for that process). The process capability focus the components and assemblies assurance, based on the dimensional and geometric tolerance. Also the process assurances are about components and assemblies control, based on correct dimensional and geometric tolerance. The product performance is dimensionally assured by the six degrees of freedom translated as locating and assembly references for its function. Aspects related to the stiffness are relevant and the concepts will be presented. The proposed Operational Diagram is focused to meet activities and product pattern development with process capacity, managed by quality tools and process control methodology. The benefits of Operational Diagram are to identify and make the correlation among activities, capability and variation through dimensional and geometric references creation, with product and process continuous improvement. The data base for this proposal are in the multiples process and project applied, in the information, in the process validation based on statistical analysis, in the CAE tooling with basis on tolerance by ASME Y 14.5 M., that identify references application, referenced to the locating strategy.

Aplicação da metodologia \'Design for Six Sigma\' (DFSS) em projetos automotivos. / Application of the \'Design for Six Sigma\' (DFSS) methodology in automotive projects.

Alexandre Fioravanti 17 June 2005 (has links)
This present work aims to evaluate the application of the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology to the vehicle development process (VDP) seeking to reach Six Sigma quality levels when the beginning of the production process. Actually, when it is spoken in manufacturing products that are already born with Six Sigma quality levels, it doesn\'t mean that it is mandatory that must be obtained the honorable relationship of 3,4 defects per millions of opportunities, but that provide positive results in relation to the quality improvement, costs optimization, reduction of the development timing, glimpsing the most important of all of the aspects: the customer\'s total enthusiasm. For that, when it is spoken about the application of DFSS in the extent of the vehicles development, the scenery of this context becomes relatively wider and complex, face at the level of technological development of this section. The subject is introduced being described the vehicles development process in its approach currently spread, found by a very defined and structured process, to allow introducing DFSS in this process. Before, however, the whole methodology regarding Six Sigma is introduced, for being the foundation base for the creation of DFSS. Finally, the placement of a case study tries to demonstrate the application of the DFSS methodology applied specifically for GM, trying to report the strategy of the application, as well as their main reached benefits.

Co-design - a study in the automotive industry.

Dalicio Guiguer Filho 01 December 2005 (has links)
The increasing trend of suppliers participation in the automotive industry product development process makes the study of this partnership important for automakers and suppliers. The main objective of this partnership is to take advantage of suppliers engineering capability (know-how) in order to bring new technologies to the vehicle and reduce automakers development costs. Konstruktion av monteringsmaskin för distanser i lamellseparator / Development of Assembly Machine for Spacers in Lamella Separator

Jansson, Fredrik, Weston, Christopher January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is about development of a machine for a company called Meva. The machine is supposed to assemble plastic spacers in metal plates that are mounted in water treatment machines. The water treatment machines that are affected by this thesis are two lamella separators. A lamella separator is used to separate larger solid objects from the water to prevent the objects to get to the finer stages of water treatment. Today the assembling of spacers is made by hand and is therefore an expensive process. Therefore, the company wants to investigate how such an automated process could look like. The goal is that this machine will help to reduce some of the assembly costs and create a foundation for the project. To achieve wished results, structured product development methods from an idea to a finished concept are used. At the end of this thesis a concept is shown, solutions for materials are proposed and recommendations for continued work are given. The concept is a machine that with the help of pneumatic cylinders and pneumatic grippers can assemble the plastic pacers in the plates.

Development of technological competitiveness by integrating instruments and automation in process machinery

Kauppinen, S. (Sakari) 25 May 1999 (has links)
Abstract The Finnish chemical forest industry has undergone a profound structural change over the past two decades. The basic industry is increasingly focusing its product development investments on its own products and operations while the development of processes and process machinery is left to specialised companies. At the same time the purchases of the pulp and paper industry are becoming larger: there is a shift from single device purchases to larger functional units. This research studies the Finnish process machinery industry serving the needs of the pulp and paper industry and its product development environment and strategies, and evaluates the ability of selected case companies to design integrated process solutions. Particularly the role of measurement and automation technology in these solutions is under closer scrutiny. Aspects of product life cycles and technology management, together with various procedures and operating models for innovation and product development processes, are discussed on the basis of the literature. The empirical part of the research was carried out as a case study with several Finnish companies manufacturing machinery and equipment for the chemical forest industry. The results show that the strategies of the studied industry are still very much dominated by the traditional emphasis on machinery design and construction. The change in the customers' purchasing behaviour towards ever larger units and functions is reflected particularly as increasingly large delivery projects. The units required by the customers are put together in the project phase, using parts and components developed in isolation from each other. There is very little evidence of actual product development, design or producing of integrated process solutions. In those cases where the design work has explicitly aimed at an integrated functional unit, the result has been a process that the customer can easily purchase and where the supplier's expertise in processes and process control is already included in the package. Designing integrated process solutions takes more than technical expertise and capability: the strategy, organisation, and product development process of the supplier company must support the integration of different technologies and expertise areas in the product. Instead of the traditional serial product development it is imperative that the questions of process design, process machinery, and process control are treated and solved simultaneously. The in-house expertise and networking of research and development must be promoted in such a way that the capabilities necessary to include the required technologies and expertise areas in a product project are already available when the product is being specified and designed.

Collaborative Product Development under Information Asymmetry / La conception collaborative de produit sous l'asymétrie d'information

Shalpegin, Timofey 26 June 2015 (has links)
Product design stage is utterly important for successful product development, as up to 90% of the product costs are locked in during the concept and design engineering phases. At these phases, manufacturers of new products actively involve their suppliers to participate in product development. However, academic literature has not given sufficient attention to the link between the early supplier involvement stage and the subsequent mass production stage. The goals of the product developing manufacturer and its suppliers are not necessarily aligned, which can result in serious inefficiencies. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to resolve the conflict of incentives at the product design stage when a manufacturer of a new product involves a supplier of a key component. This thesis considers three important facets of collaborative product development: (1) multiple alternative designs of the key component, (2) parallel component development by several suppliers, and (3) testing of the key component by the supplier in order to learn its quality. Relying on the methodology of non-cooperative game theory, the thesis provides practical prescriptions on how to mitigate the incentive misalignment in each of the three cases.

Product Development : Steering solutions for Easy Boating / Produktutveckling : Styrning för Easy Boating

Hansson, Mattias, Palmgren, Mats January 2017 (has links)
This bachelor's thesis consists of a product development project performed for Volvo Penta's transmissions department. In line with Volvo Penta's vision of Easy Boating, the problem description entailed, to make boating easier by developing concepts for the steering of boats. The goal was to develop three concepts which suited the requirements provided by the project owner. The bachelor's thesis was preceded by a study, in the form of a concept generation process. The project was initiated with a concept generation process, in parallel with a requirement analysis. This concept generation was performed with the assistance of tools from the Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch (TRIZ) methodology. Utilised parts from TRIZ are tools for identifying free resources, finding and resolving undesirable contradictions and predicting the next step of development of a system. In accordance with the methods of Set-Based Engineering, the generated concepts were not chosen for their merit, but instead eliminated based on requirements and developed knowledge. To accomplish this, the requirements were collected from the identified stakeholders of the project and ranked based on their respective weight. The requirements were used in the elimination of the concepts which was performed in three stages: pruning of concepts, concept screening and ultimately, concept scoring. These three stages were based on the literature and chosen because of their ability to incorporate the requirements in the elimination. As a result of the elimination process six concepts of two different product categories, addons to existing solutions and complete new systems, were presented to Volvo Penta in combination with a product development plan. The result of six concepts was obtained since none of the concepts categories could be eliminated by the requirements collected in the process and therefore it was decided to present tree from each category.

Factors and Drivers of Partner Selection and Formation within Open Innovation in SMEs : Study on SMEs in Manufacturing Sector in Sweden

Pommerening, Sebastian, Al Wawi, Bara January 2017 (has links)
Background: To stay competitive and efficient on a global market, firms have to generate new products and service ideas using closed or open innovation processes. Open innovation activities emerge from both internal and external innovative resources and while SMEs could and do adopt a variation of innovation models, they tend to adopt open innovation activities. Collaboration is one of the most important factors of open innovation and SMEs collaborate to enhance their internal innovation activities and outcomes, as it provides them access to complementary assets and technologically knowledge. However, the literature is not clear as to how SME decide on prospect partners." Purpose:The overall purpose of this thesis is to map the structure of the decision-making process of SMEs regarding partner selection at the early stage of technology exploration (R&D stage) within open innovation and new product development. Method:The approach of this study is a qualitative research method with an abductive inspired research approach. The data are collected through interview study. A Theory Driven Thematic Analysis technique is used to analyse the data. The respondents are found by nonprobability sampling in form of purposive sampling. Findings:Our findings show that SMEs managers, R&D managers, and CEOs who participated within this research consider many practical factors that drive their decision making process regarding partner selection. The main goal they try to achieve when choosing partners is to build collaborations with: the highest quality of outcomes, most cost-effective activities, and most time-effective processes. Conclusion:SMEs, within our sample, do not follow a specific or pre-written strategies when choosing partners. Moreover, SMEs managers prefer to innovate internally without collaborations if they had the needed resources. If SMEs manager had to collaborate, they search for existing partners. However, if they had no existing partners to fulfil the needed resources, they search for new partners
