Anti-Intellectualism and the Fracking of Psychology

Dixon, Wallace E., Jr. 01 January 2015 (has links)
The American Psychological Association (APA) Working Group’s Proactive Approach and Pedagogical Statement represent good first steps in helping graduate programs manage threats to professional training imposed by “conscience clause legislation.” But much heavier lifting is needed if the discipline hopes to fend off far greater threats to its legitimacy imposed by anti-intellectualism broadly. I suggest that this objective can be accomplished through establishing statewide psychology collaboratives comprising health service psychology (HSP) and non-HSP psychologists, jointly mobilized by APA and the Association for Psychological Science, who should work with state legislatures, through existing infrastructures found in state psychological associations, to implement wholesale foundational changes in psychology education from elementary school through graduate school, through political reformation and the branding of psychology.

Investigating heterogeneity in physician use of electronic medical records : the role of professional values and perspectives of uncertainty

Lanham, Holly Jordan 23 January 2012 (has links)
While information systems researchers have argued well from socio-technical and organizational culture perspectives that information technology (IT) and organizational structures are interdependent and continually reshape each other, few studies have sought fine-grained, micro-level explanations for the heterogeneity in IT use often observed across seemingly similar end users and seemingly similar work contexts. Using a nested comparative case study design, I explore electronic medical record (EMR) use by physicians in an integrated multi-specialty health care organization. I use multiple methods to observe and develop micro-level understandings of factors associated with EMR use. The study was conducted in eight practices operating within the same organization. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and questionnaires. A constant comparative approach guided data analysis. Differences in physician values were noted, as were differences in physician perspectives of uncertainty. I categorized physicians as high, medium and low EMR users depending on a variety of factors including degree to which the EMR was integrated into work practices, degree of feature use, and degree of EMR-enabled communication. Drawing on theories of professionalism, I explain between-physician heterogeneity in EMR use as partly a function of differences in dimensionality of professional values. Three dimensions of professional values were identified 1) profession-oriented, 2) patient-oriented and 3) organization-oriented. Drawing on complexity theory, I argue that differences in physician perspectives of uncertainty influence their EMR use. I found that physicians who viewed uncertainty primarily as reducible through information tended to be higher users of the EMR. Physicians who viewed uncertainty as fundamental, or inherent, in care delivery processes tended to be lower users of the EMR. This study contributes to information systems research by extending current understandings of IT use. The professional values held by physicians and their perspectives of uncertainty may be more important in shaping EMR use than previously thought. These findings indicate the need to more aggressively pursue EMR designs, implementation strategies and policies that accommodate these two additional factors. Additionally, findings from this research indicate a need for IT managers in professional settings to consider end-user professional values and perspectives of uncertainty in decisions involving IT assets. / text

Políticas da psicologia de São Paulo : as entidades de classe durante o período do regime militar à redemocratização do país / Politics of psychology of São Paulo : the class entities during the period of military government to the redemocratization of the country

Hur, Domenico Uhng 14 December 2005 (has links)
In 1962, Psychology was regulated as a profession by the Law 4119, but only in 1971, did the Law 5766 create the Regionals and Federal Council of Psychology (the Regionals were open only in 1974). On August 20, 1973, the work minister gave the Union "letter" to the Psychologists' Professional Association of São Paulo in order to transform it into the Psychologists' Union. Thus, we understand that it has been a long history for the constitution of Psychology as a regulated profession in the country, but in the bibliography review, we have found few registers about the construction of Psychology from the view of its entities. Therefore, we intend to reflect about the practices of Psychology's class entities of São Paulo from the military dictatorship to the political overture in the country (1969-1986) through documental research and interviews with former participants. We found differences in the practices of the entities in the military dictatorship (the 1960s/1970s) and in the political overture (since 1979), when "left side" groups took over the entities. We noted that the practices were a reflex of the political conjuncture of the country mediated by the conception of the social function of Psychology, where, in the 1970s, the entities defended Psychology as a goals in itself, solely as a profession, and, since the 1980s, with the country redemocratization, they started to discuss about the political function of Psychology in Brazilian society. We could observe that the entry of the "left side" in the entities was accompanied by the same movement of transition from the disciplinary societies to the controlled societies.

United we stand? Investigating the impact of unified dues agreements between state and national Career & Technical Education (CTE) professional organizations on CTE funding in the southern states

Hall, Justin Ryan 09 December 2022 (has links)
Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers have long been active in lobbying the federal and state governments in support of CTE through their professional organizations, but these are not traditionally considered interest groups. This study sought to determine if the formal relationships—dues agreements—between the two largest national professional organizations, and their state affiliates had an impact on state funding for CTE. The impacts of professional organization unity, membership rates, and lobbying expenses on state-level CTE funding were analyzed through the lens of interest group theory, a subfield of political science. Within this population (N = 13), 1) a link was found between dues agreement type and funding; 2) Agricultural educators joined their professional organization(s) at higher rates than other CTE teachers; 3) a low relationship was discovered between professional organization membership percentages and funding; and 4) a high degree of relationship was found between lobbying expenses and funding.

Les acteurs du Crédit Agricole de la Côte-d' Or (1896-1975) / The actors of Credit Agricole of Côte-d’Or (1896-1975)

Guillemin, Jean 01 July 2015 (has links)
This work deals with the history of Crédit agricole of Côte-d’Or since the creation of its first local mutual bank, in 1896, until 1975. During this period, this organization dedicated to the financing of agriculture, in the very local scale of cantons at the beginning and then in the whole Côte-d’Or district scale, becomes progressively a credit institution nearly opened to all activities and all depositors having a banking market share of 30% in this area. After having defined the framework quite particular of mutualism in which are acting these banks, this study tries to understand how they respect it during eight decades. Many events are occurring: wars, economic crises, agricultural modernization, withdrawal of State aids and consequently financial resources needs, widening of the sphere of operation, growth and extension of the branches, processing of mass and large range of activities outside the agricultural sector. Progressively, groups of economic, social and political players are changing and more numerous: farmers, country people, depositors, administrators, local elected representatives, State, staff, members of the management. It is right to understand, at the main stages of this evolution, the way by which these more and more numerous players adapt the mutual bank to ceaselessly changeable contexts.
