Rep-Index : uma abordagem abrangente e adaptável para identificar reputação acadêmica / Rep-Index : a comprehensive and adaptable approach to identify academic reputation

Cervi, Cristiano Roberto January 2013 (has links)
The task of evaluating the scientific production of a researcher is based strongly on the analysis of their curriculum. In that context, the modeling of profiles of researchers is fundamental task especially when one wants to evaluate the reputation of the researchers. This can occur by means of a process of analysis of the trajectory of all the scientific career of the researcher. Such process involves not only aspects related to papers or books, but also other elements inherent in the activity of a researcher, as orientations of master’s degree and doctorate; participation in defense of master's and doctoral degrees; papers presented in conferences, participation in research projects, international integration, among others. This proposal specifies a profile template for researchers (Rep-Model) and a metric to measure academic reputation (Rep-Index). The profile modeling process involves define which information is relevant to the specification of the profile and shows through 18 elements and 5 categories. The process for measuring researcher's reputation is defined by a metric that generates an index. This index is calculated by using the information contained in the profile of the researcher. To evaluate the approach proposed in the thesis, extensive experiments were conducted. The experiments involved the evaluation of Rep-Model by means of correlation analysis and data mining algorithms. The Rep-Index was also evaluated and correlated with two metrics widely used in the scientific community, the h-index and gindex. As a baseline, all of CNPq researchers in the areas of Computer Science, Economics and Dentistry were used. The work in this thesis is set in the context of identifying the reputation of researchers within the academic sphere. The approach of this thesis is premised be comprehensive and adaptable, because it involves the life science researcher built throughout his scientific career and can be used in different research areas and in different contexts.

O conceito de generalização a partir de um olhar dialético-complexo sobre o modelo de perfil conceitual / The concept of generalization from a dialectic-complex view on the conceptual profile model

Felipe Prado Pazello dos Santos 23 March 2011 (has links)
From an investigation about the concept of concept in philosophy and the polysemy of generalization in several knowledge areas, we have reached the conclusion that the last topic is not problematized in the literature studied. Such a fact may be a reflex of common sense consideration concerning the process of generalization, making people conclude that there is no \"appearant reason\" to discuss it. The vast majority of the works investigated understand generalization as the inductive process per se or the conclusion obtained from it. Other works, particularly referring to Vigotski´s ideas, associate generalization to decontextualization. According to our reflections, such ways to consider generalization have been found in works basing the Conceptual Profile Theory (MORTIMER, 1994a, 1994b, 1995, 1998, 2000). From theoretical frameworks related to dialectic materialism, cultural-historical psychology and complexity, we discuss the limitations of the conceptual profile model and we talk about the way in which generalization, seen under a dialectic-complex approach of the teaching-learning process, is able to shed some light to the dynamics of the conceptual profile zones and to the subject-object relation.

Limitations On Point-source Stochastic Simulations In Terms Of Ground-motion Models

Yenier, Emrah 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, the limitations of point-source stochastic simulations are investigated in terms of fundamental geophysical parameters. Within this context, a total of 6000 synthetic ground motions are generated for various magnitude (5.0 &amp / #8804 / Mw &amp / #8804 / 7.5), source-to-site distance (less than 100 km), faulting style (shallow dipping and strike-slip) and site class (soft, stiff and rock) bins. The simulations are performed in two main stages: (1) the acceleration time series at outcropping very hard rock sites are simulated based on the stochastic method proposed by Boore (1983, 2003) and (2) they are modified through 1-D equivalent linear site response analysis to generate the free-field motions at soft, stiff and rock sites. Thus, as a part of this study, a probability-based soil profile model that considers the random variation of S-wave slowness as a function of depth is derived. The synthetic ground motions are assessed with several recent empirical ground-motion models to constitute the limitations of the simulation procedure. It is believed that the outcomes of this study will realistically describe the limitations of stochastic point-source simulation approach that can be employed further for the studies on improvements of this simulation technique.

Size-selective sediment transport and cross-shore profile evolution in the nearshore zone

Srisuwan, Chatchawin 12 November 2012 (has links)
Cross-shore bathymetric evolution in the nearshore zone often leads to threatening consequences such as beach erosion and shoreline retreat that concern the coastal community. A new, comprehensive cross-shore morphodynamic model was developed that can be used to describe and predict these phenomena. The study included both physical and numerical models that were designed to focus on the influence of sediment size characteristics on the cross-shore sediment transport process. For a profile equilibrium timescale, three types of beach profiles with different sediment mixtures were simulated in a small-scale, random-wave flume laboratory using erosive, storm, and accretive wave conditions. Dynamic relationships between the sediment grain sorting and beach profile changes were found to be evident as size-graded sediment fractions tended to relocate to different energetic zones along the cross-shore profiles. Existing phase-averaged wave and circulation models were utilized together with several new intra-wave modules for predicting important hydrodynamic parameters that were validated using the experimental data. A novel, multi-size sediment transport model was formulated to compute individual transport rates of size-graded sediment fractions while accounting for their interaction and non-linear size dependencies. The model was coupled with a new grain sorting model that resolves cross-shore grain sorting and vertical grain lamination. Compared to a traditional modeling approach, the new comprehensive model proved to offer superior modeling accuracy for both profile evolution and sediment grain size change. The use of the model is most advantageous for a condition with intensive grain sorting, a common scenario on a natural beach profile. Equilibrium beach profile is also better simulated by the model as size-graded fractions are predicted to relocate to different zones where they could withstand local hydrodynamics. Other new components that also help improve the modeling capability include the terms for wave-breaking and bed-slope effects, wave-crest sediment flux, and acceleration-induced bottom-shear stress. Besides superior profile modeling accuracy, sediment size characteristics and their spatial and temporal variations are also a useful set of information provided by the new model.
