The elaboration and empirical evaluation of a partial talent management competency model in the nursing profession

Smuts, Nicolette 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study stems from an urgent need to understand which factors contribute to nurse practitioners’ intention to quit, and consequently what organisations can do to retain these practitioners. There is increased pressure on the healthcare sector, more specifically nursing, due to a severe shortage in this discipline. These shortages are not an isolated phenomenon, but influence the private as well as public sector worldwide, as well as in South Africa. A multitude of factors contribute to the fact that nursing is a scarce skill worldwide. Some factors are controllable, others not. By isolating the controllable factors, organisations and managers can be equipped to put action plans in place to decrease the impact of this crisis. Processes and action plans to enlarge the nursing pool, and also to retain the current workforce, can contribute to overcoming this challenge. There is proof that the implementation of a structured talent management programme can contribute to overcoming this challenge. Line managers and their competence regarding the management of personnel play a key role in such a talent management programme. This study has as its objective to re-evaluate an existing talent management competency model for line managers, and to propose additional variables that can influence organisational outcomes like job satisfaction, organisational commitment and turnover intention. By understanding which line manager competencies influence organisational outcomes, and the manner in which they influence these outcomes, line managers as well as organisations can be equipped to formulate processes and programmes that can contribute to the retention of a scarce skill, and importantly, also minimise the impact of a worldwide crisis. The results of the study indicated that the operationalisation of the talent management competencies failed. The originally proposed model consequently had to be reduced by deleting all talent management latent variables from the model. Poor model fit was obtained for the reduced model. Modifications were, however, made to the reduced model based on modification index suggestions derived from the data. The modified model showed good fit and support was obtained for all the paths in the modified model. Crossvalidation of the modified model was recommended.

Socio-political factors and the training of members of the church of South India

Samuel, Selvanayagam Donald 30 June 2006 (has links)
The research is done within the diocese of Kanyakumari of the Church of South India. It examines the viability of the following training programmes to socio-political factors: the Church Workers Theological Training Programme, the Sunday School Programme, the Vacation Bible School Programme, the parish-based training programmes - for example retreats and workshops, the Women’s Fellowship Programme, the Christian Endeavour Programme, the Programme of Communication and Revival as well as that of the Student Christian Movement of India, and the Union of Evangelical Students of India. The practitioners of these programmes felt the need for guide-lines to transform their programmes to be more relevant to their socio-political contexts. Hence the present qualitative-oriented research was undertaken. The preliminary interviews and reading of the related literature enabled the researcher to identify some promoted theories, regarding the relationship between the socio-political factors and the programmes; this assisted him to set up a questionnaire for semistructured interviews. A sample for interviews was chosen with the help of the organisers of the programmes. A pilot study was conducted using the questionnaire, which led to the semi-structured interviews. The respondents narrated their experiences and reflections related to the socio-political factors. The information was organised, scrutinised, and the findings were recorded under six different pointers, which enabled the researcher to exhibit and explain the connections between the training programmes and the sociopolitical factors. Then the findings were evaluated, using the puzzle-solving method. Consequently, some guidelines were devised. These guide-lines indicate the limitations and the possibilities in making a socially-oriented training programme more vibrant and viable to its socio-political factors. Moreover, they highlight the possibilities for the existing pietistic-oriented programmes to become more relevant to the context. They also guide the practitioners to construct alternative approaches in training that are more relevant. The research is a small incentive to the emerging cooperation among the practitioners of the various training programmes in CSI Kanyakumari diocese. It will hopefully encourage them to join hands with people of other faiths and Non Governmental organisations in facilitating the social transformation in India today. Proposals are made for further related research work. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / (D.Th. (Practical Theology))

Specifika supervize dobrovolnických programů ve zdravotně sociální oblasti / Specifics of supervision of volunteer programmes in health-social area

BRÁZDOVÁ, Pavla January 2010 (has links)
Although the benefits of supervision are known nowadays, it is still not applied in a number of fields. This concerns even such occupations where direct work with clients is the basis of work or voluntary activity (e.g. health care, school education and even some organisations providing services of social care etc.). This thesis first informs about supervision in general, i.e. about its history, objectives, functions and division. Further, it deals with the person of the supervisor, the supervised person, and their relationship. The theoretical part is finished with information on social services, volunteering and supervision of volunteer programmes in the field of medical and social care. In comparison with the supervision of providers of social services, this volunteer supervision should be different, and this difference should consist in its voluntary, not obligatory, character. This diploma thesis aims at describing specific features of supervision of volunteer programmes in the field of medical and social care. A partial objective is to find differences between providing and receiving supervisions in volunteer programmes and supervisions of organisations providing social services. The research was both quantitative and qualitative, included method of questioning, semi-standardised questionnaire and a guided interview. There were three hypotheses set in the thesis, two of which were confirmed and one disproved. Further, on the basis of her results, the author defines the specific character of the supervision of volunteer programmes. The author regards as the most important finding the fact that volunteers take part in supervision voluntarily and with pleasure, view it as beneficial a natural part of their volunteer activity. This is also the most essential difference between the volunteer supervision and the supervision provided by social services, where over 50 per cent of staffs view supervision as an obligatory part of their occupation, and a much higher percentage of the staffs in comparison with volunteers say that they do not regard supervision as a benefit for themselves. The author sees the applicability of this thesis in publishing her results in professional journals or in publishing on the web pages of the National Volunteer Centre, because so far almost nothing has been published on this subject.

Gomes, Solange Maranho January 2016 (has links)
The general aim of this thesis was to investigate the professional insertion of graduates of degree programmes in music education, offered by public higher education institutions of the state of Parana, Brazil, graduated from 2009 to 2014. The specific objectives sought to examine the occupational status of the graduates; to analyse the relationship between the professional status of the graduates and their higher education; to verify the working conditions of the graduates; and to analyse their level of satisfaction towards their work. Professional insertion is understood as a non-linear and multidimensional process, which depends upon both individual and institutional factors, ideas that theoretically guided this research. The method chosen to carry out this research was the survey, by means of a self-administered online questionnaire, which has been answered by a sample of 215 graduates. Collected data were organized in two main axes: the graduates‟ profile, composed of sociodemographic information, training path, and evaluation of the higher education program; and the graduates‟ professional insertion. The results indicate precocity in the graduates‟ professional insertion, which, in most cases, begins even before entering the higher education programmes, in activities of music teaching, other activities in the field of music, and, even, activities in areas not related to music. Almost all graduates were employed after the completion of their degree courses. The practice of multiple activities is kept, even though music teaching practice is predominant, indicating that the degree courses in music education are fulfilling their main purpose of teachers training. Moreover, most of the graduates have not experienced situations of unemployment, demonstrating they have managed to enter the labour market. They are satisfied with their professional paths and professional status. However, they are dissatisfied or just a little satisfied with their wage level. By providing data on the professional insertion of graduates in music education, this research has enabled an initial mapping of the professional activities of these graduates within the state of Parana, which can contribute to deepen the knowledge about the professional performance of those graduates, and to subsidize further reflexion on music teachers‟ education.

Adapting to Climate Change: A Sensitivity Analysis of National Adaptation Programmes of Action Towards Women

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: The most recent decision of the 2012 Conference of the Parties (CoP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognizes that in order to create climate policies that respond to the different needs of men and women a more balanced representation of women from developed and developing countries is needed. National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) provide a process for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to “identify priority activities that respond to their urgent and immediate needs to respond to impending threats from climate change.” Since 1997, the United Nations has agreed to gender mainstreaming- a globally accepted strategy for promoting gender equality by ensuring that gender perspectives and attention to the goal of gender equality are central to all activities in the all UN systems. Due to the gender division of labor climate change will affect men and women differently. Policies and programs that do not take into account the needs and capacities of both men and women will fail to be effective and may worsen preexisting conditions that historically favor men. My research investigates the UN’s commitment towards gender mainstreaming. More specifically my objective is to understand how and to what extent the NAPAs from 49 countries integrate a gender dimension into their national climate adaptation policy. For the purpose of this research, I consider three interrelated issues: whether gender-specific needs and vulnerabilities were identified by the NAPA; if these needs and vulnerabilities were addressed by proposed adaptation projects; and in what forms women participated in the formulation of the NAPA. The scope of this research begins with an overview assessment of 49 NAPAs followed by a comparative assessment of NAPAs from four countries- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Niger, and an in-depth analysis of Nepal’s NAPA, which incorporates field study. Nepal was chosen as a focus country due to its identification as being both inclusive and gender sensitive. The method of inquiry consists of both quantitative and qualitative analysis, utilizing the quantitative measures of HDI and GII and the qualitative methods of content analysis and case study. The findings suggest that the response to the gender dimensions of climate change found in adaptation policies vary widely among the LDCs and the level of response is dependent upon social, cultural, economic, and political contexts within each LDC. Additionally, I find that gender mainstreaming techniques have not been fully integrated into the NAPA policy and processes, and have not been effective at promoting gender equality through adaptation strategies. Recommendations are provided in order to help mainstream gender in NAPAs as they continue to be developed, revised, and implemented. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Environmental Social Science 2015
