Eyes That Seen Too Much

Cloud, Dawn 21 April 2009 (has links)
This thesis is compiled of four short stories and is an excerpt from a story cycle that I’ve been working on for the last four years entitled Eyes That Seen Too Much. These stories follow the challenges faced by the Labossierre women. Although most fiction writing does address challenges and/or how characters face their particular challenges, this story cycle is slightly different due to the unconventional backgrounds of the characters. Katherine and her sister Raquel grew up as Prostitutes in Louisiana, where their mother, Bit (Lil’ Bit) was also a Prostitute. The sister’s daughters, Kennedy and Marie become Exotic Dancers in adulthood, and the reader witnesses some of the challenges that they face as children and the social constraints of being daughters of former prostitutes and exotic dancers.

This study analyzes the dynamics of prostitution and sexual politics as depicted in Putain, by Nelly Arcan, in order to explore the integral prostitutional experience of the narrator, a prostitute named Cynthia. Our threefold analysis presents a gradation that leads from the private place of the prostitutional relationship to the public social sphere. Thus, we examine first the status that the narrator occupies in the framework of the milieu of prostitution. Then, we probe the diverse socio-cultural and psychological phenomenon that serve as motivational forces to the choice of becoming a prostitute, as depicted in Arcan's work. In order to do this, we firstly analyze the family as a social microcosm that has provoked the narrator's path to prostitution. Finally, we seek to identify the relationship between the submission of the prostitute in Putain and the historic oppression of women in patriarchal capitalist society. Given the diverse patriarchal discourses addressed in Putain and the questioning attitude that the narrator herself adopts towards these discourses, it was deemed appropriate to conduct our research, as well as the study of Arcan's text, according to an interdisciplinary feminist perspective.

Labelle, Véronique 02 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Johansson, Sofie, Ljungdahl, Petra January 2008 (has links)
Our purpose with this essay is to find explanations to the genesis of the Swedish law against prostitution now in power, known as Sexköpslagen 1998:408. We enter deeply into the official reports behind the law. This Swedish law implies that in a sex trade a crime is committed only by the consumer, and not by the seller. Our essay will result in an analysis of what sexköpslagen is an expression for. Our assumption is that the so called ideology of (gender) equality in Sweden might be a part of the explanation to the genesis of sexköpslagen. The question at issue, which we will try to give an answer to is: Why was a prohibition against buying sexual services introduced in Sweden? To be able to study the unique law we will make some international comparisons in order to relate the Swedish law to other countries’ regulations. The method of our essay is to analysis material that mainly consists of official reports and preparatory to the law. The process to the Swedish law was complicated and protracted. Political discussions about a criminalization began in the 1970 but it would take thirty years before the law was applied. Of crucial importance to the law now in power was the women union of the social democracy party. In order to meet the aim of our essay we analyze our material with the theory of the Swedish women movements and how they put the question of equality on the political agenda. Our conclusion is that prostitution is considered to be an expression for lack of (gender) equality.
