The Appropriate Model for Occupational Social Work and EAPs in South Africa: An Occupational Social Work Perspective

Senoamadi, Phatelang William 01 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 8805489T - MA research report - School of Human and Community Development - Faculty of Humanities / A casual scan of workplace based mental health services in South Africa reveals a developing tendency and trend towards the outsourcing of this service. Most companies that previously boosted relatively huge integrated and comprehensive workplace mental health services have ceased offering these services internally in favour of sourcing them from external service providers. Most occupational social workers who previously worked in these departments are now part of the outsourced services. Occupational social work theory advocates for practitioners to go beyond focusing on the individual by also seeking to impact on the environment and the community in the quest to serve the needs of their clients. Some services, particularly if the practitioner seeks to change the host organisation, are easier to render when the practitioner is within the organisation. The present study investigated, using robust statistical methods, firstly, the desirability of comprehensiveness and integration in workplace mental health services, and, secondly, whether observed levels of comprehensiveness and integration in service delivery in a single organisation that uses outsourced workplace mental health services are in line with desired levels. The research results indicate that host organisations desire more comprehensiveness and integration in workplace mental health services than is currently observed from an outsourced mental health service.

Komandinis darbas teikiant psichosocialines paslaugas vaikų dienos centre / Team work on provision of psychosocial services in the child day care center

Kupčiūnienė, Sigita 24 September 2008 (has links)
This research paper strives to investigate the realia and perspectives of a team work in provision of psychosocial services in the Child day care center. Carried out literature analysis showed that one of the projects of public assistance are Child day care centers, however, enormous pressure of work of parents, problems of emotional family coldness result in worsening of psychosocial state of a child. Thereby, regular Child day care centers and assistance provided in there fail to solve the problem. And here, psychosocial assistance of a team of specialists is required. The analysis of team functions, employed in satisfaction of psychosocial needs of the clients, brought to the light the fact that each team is a system which grounds itself on a certain context, environment, and specificity of a problem of a client. Alternatives provided for regular assistance methods in Child day care centers are Art therapy methods, applied as complex assistance measure in psychosocial rehabilitation of children. Having revealed the perspectives of application of these methods in a context of team work, the research established that when applied in practice these methods help to express negative emotions so that we accept those, help to make non-verbal contact with other members of the group, allow to perceive and express the inner conflicts. The analysis of team work results demonstrates that all methods of the research paper are appropriate and supplement each other, nevertheless, Art... [to full text]

An Exploration Of Creative Arts Therapies In Pediatric Hospitals

Carlson, Jacqueline Marie, Galan, Hilda Mercedes 01 April 2016 (has links)
This research paper explores the use of creative arts therapies with children and families in a pediatric hospital setting as experienced by the therapists who provide these services. The research investigates art therapy, music therapy and dance/movement therapy at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), with an in depth consideration of the role of art therapy services in this setting. The researchers reviewed general literature regarding hospitalization, specifically its effects on children and families, availability and role of psychosocial services and the intensive care units (ICU). Literature discussing creative arts therapies (art therapy, music therapy and dance/movement therapy) was also reviewed, with a focus on art therapy and its role in medical settings with children/families, with pediatric cancer patients and in psychosocial services. Based on information gleaned from the literature review, the researchers crafted an online survey utilized to gather information regarding the experience of providing creative arts therapies in a pediatric hospital setting. The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with three selected survey respondents to further explore these experiences through interview questions and art making. The qualitative data from survey/interview responses, including the art, was reviewed and analyzed by the researchers. Analysis of the data resulted in five prominent themes from the online survey data: being present, family, support, change and identity. Four prominent themes emerged from the interview data: empowerment, culture, being present and identity. The researchers then examined these themes in the context of the general and art therapy literature. The meanings derived from these findings demonstrate the importance of continued and expanded use of creative arts therapies in pediatric hospitals.

An explorationary study of the types of psychosocial services provided to educators living with HIV at selected primary schools in Limpopo Province

Thindisa, Johanna Ntlwaneng 09 1900 (has links)
Educators play an essential role within the education system as role models. Many educators, in addition to being affected by learners living with HIV and AIDS, are themselves living with HIV and struggle to cope. SMTs have to play a role in the provision of psychosocial services. The purpose of this study was to explore the types of psychosocial services provided to ELWHIV by their SMTs in order to gain insight and understanding and to make suggestions on how psychosocial services can be improved. A qualitative study was undertaken in 2008. Fifteen interviews were conducted with ELWHIV and members of SMTs at four primary schools in Bela-Bela, Limpopo Province. The findings reveal that SMTs are failing to implement government policies and are not providing adequate support for ELWHIV. None of the participating schools had a functional AIDS policy. Support structures were found to be inadequate and ineffective. Disclosure was identified as one of the major obstacles to the provision of effective services. / Sociology / M.A. (Social Behaviour Studies in HIV/AIDS)
