Experiences of enrolled nurses towards caring for people living with HIV and AIDS

The aim of the study was to gain an understanding on the experiences of enrolled nurses with regard to caring for people living with HIV and AIDS in one of the rural hospital in Vhembe district, in order to make recommendations for guiding and supporting those enrolled nurses. This study followed qualitative approach using interpretative phenomenological analysis design. Data were collected from 11 purposively selected participants using semi structured interviews. Data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis framework for data analysis. Three super-ordinate themes emerged from data analysis namely: resources, support and impact of working with HIV positive patients. The study revealed that enrolled nurses are failing to provide proper care to people living with HIV and AIDS due to inadequate resources and lack of support. This situation has negative impact on the health of enrolled nurses providing care to people living with HIV and AIDS. Recommendations are put forth to improve resources, enhance support and for mitigating impacts experienced by enrolled nurses when caring for people living with HIV and AIDS at a rural hospital in Vhembe district of Limpopo province. / Health Studies / M.P.H.

An explorationary study of the types of psychosocial services provided to educators living with HIV at selected primary schools in Limpopo Province

Educators play an essential role within the education system as role models. Many educators, in addition to being affected by learners living with HIV and AIDS, are themselves living with HIV and struggle to cope. SMTs have to play a role in the provision of psychosocial services. The purpose of this study was to explore the types of psychosocial services provided to ELWHIV by their SMTs in order to gain insight and understanding and to make suggestions on how psychosocial services can be improved. A qualitative study was undertaken in 2008. Fifteen interviews were conducted with ELWHIV and members of SMTs at four primary schools in Bela-Bela, Limpopo Province. The findings reveal that SMTs are failing to implement government policies and are not providing adequate support for ELWHIV. None of the participating schools had a functional AIDS policy. Support structures were found to be inadequate and ineffective. Evaluation of the resource allocation process towards an HIV/AIDS workplace policy of a public service department in Limpopo, South Africa

The AIDS epidemic affects the capacity of the South African public service to deliver essential services. In response, the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism in Limpopo implemented its HIV/AIDS workplace policy in 2003. This research evaluated the extent to which resources were allocated towards the implementation of the workplace policy, to effectively respond to the impacts of HIV/AIDS on the workplace. A combined quantitative and qualitative approach was used. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews of 43 officers involved in the implementation of the workplace policy, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Cultural practices and beliefs affecting HIV and AIDS management among Tsonga people in Bushbuckridge

This ethnographic study explored and described practices and beliefs that may have an impact on the management of HIV and AIDS among Tsonga people in Bushbuckridge. Data was collected through face to face in-depth individual interviews with 19 key informants who are highly knowledgeable about the Tsonga culture. The researcher used ethnographic content analysis to analyse data. Findings indicated that language, rituals, beliefs related to the origin of diseases, traditional healers, and tattoos are among Tsonga cultural practices and beliefs that have an impact on management of HIV and AIDS. Some of the practices increase the risk of HIV infection while some assist in the reduction of the risk of HIV infection. Based on the findings of the study and literature, the researcher managed to develop a contextual, cultural approach model for HIV and AIDS management for Tsonga people in Bushbuckridge. The model development was guided by Leininger theory of culture, care, diversity, and universality. To organise the model, the researcher used CIPO model to guide the elements of the cultural approach model. Though the model takes into consideration global and national context, the main focus was the local context in particular Bushbuckridge. The success of this model is dependent on the availability of knowledgeable healthcare practitioners, relevant resources and engaged community structure. The process of the model includes Cultural Care Preservation, Cultural care Accommodation, and Cultural care Re-patterning. The expected output of the model is modification of HIV risky cultural practices, improved health-seeking behaviour, reduction of new HIV infections and reduction of HIV and AIDS-related deaths. Based on the study outcomes, the researcher makes several recommendations in relation to implementation of the model, Nursing Practice and Education, and further research. The study has contributed to the body of knowledge in relation to cultural practices and management of HIV and AIDS. Knowledge, attitudes and experiences of people living with HIV who are on antiretroviral treatment at a public health clinic in Limpopo, South Africa

The researcher investigated the knowledge, attitudes and experiences of people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) towards antiretroviral treatment (ART) and who are accessing antiretroviral treatment at a public health clinic in Limpopo, South Africa. A qualitative method was used. The research findings revealed five themes: experiences, social support, knowledge, attitudes, unemployment and economic themes of the study. The escalating number of people infected by HIV and AIDS poses a challenge to current resources both at the hospital and household level. Community/Home based care is a viable option in response to the scourge of HIV/AIDS to compliment secondary and tertiary care as well as providing support to affected families in coping with the stress of caring for their terminally ill family members. This study explored the effectiveness of the implementation of Community/Home based care services by focusing on three sites at Bushbuckridge i.e. Cunningmore, Maviljan and Hluvukani. Findings revealed that family members were satisfied to have community caregivers entering their homes to provide care and support to their AIDS ill family members. Significant barriers were highlighted by families and community caregivers that hinder effective implementation of the programme, for instance, cultural sensitivity. A hidden cohort: HIV and AIDS amongst the farming community

Purpose This research project was an attempt to determine situational aspects of HIV and AIDS among the designated farming communities in the Vhembe and Mopani districts of Limpopo Province. Questions arising from the pilot project were premised on the capacity of farmers in these areas to adequately address the daunting reality and prevalence of HIV and AIDS in their communities. Research Design and Methodology The research was designed to facilitate the integration of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. A sample of 228 respondents was involved in a triangulated participatory action research method. To the extent that the data collection techniques were triangulated in both nature and focus, HIV/AIDS-related data and information within the designated farming communities was attained with a maximum degree of validity. The data collection techniques used in this regard were: questionnaires, which were distributed to 228 respondents; participant observation; exploratory investigation; unstructured interviews; naturalistic observation; focus group interviews and discussion; and review of documents. The reviewed documents include (primary) sources on HIV/AIDS by the Department of Health and (secondary) sources of literature by various authors presenting a range of perspectives on HIV/AIDS in farming areas. Findings The results of the study revealed the absence of a coordinated policy on HIV/AIDS in particular, and health in general; and a vacuous prevalence of basic HIV/AIDS-related information. For instance, knowledge on condom usage as a prevention strategy was ostensibly scant. Currently, primary healthcare services in the area are not available. The sampled farm workers themselves unanimously corroborated that there was no HIV/AIDS policy on the SAFM farms. Conclusion Based on the main findings established above, it has become indispensable that comprehensive and multidisciplinary HIV/AIDS policy interventions be initiated by all the relevant stakeholders. Local and provincial healthcare authorities need to provide policy guidelines for the development of such policy, taking the particular needs and circumstances of farm workers. The pervasive degree of insufficient HIV/AIDS knowledge among this group necessitates that such a policy should integrate both a labour perspective and healthcare orientation, rather than perpetuating a separation of the two paradigms. This form of integration ensures that the observance of a human rights dimension becomes a sacrosanct component of the prevention of HIV/AIDS among farm workers, as well as their education concerning their healthcare-related rights as farm employees. Furthermore, the prevalence of a national HIV and AIDS policy is mainly aimed at facilitating broad guidelines, not addressing the specific contexts of every public, corporate and rural employment sector (DoH, 2007: 11-12; Muhlemann, et al., 1992: 479). In order that the education, prevention and treatment initiatives in the Vhembe and Mopani farming communities are achieved, the most important parameters of the policy should indicate: ,,X The systematic institutionalisation of local, provincial, and national HIV and AIDS programmes, notwithstanding the provision of healthcare facilities such as clinics; ,,X The promotion of basic healthcare education in general, and HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention among farm workers in particular; ,,X The development of HIV/AIDS work place policy by SAFM as employer; ,,X The systematic involvement and formation of partnerships between policy makers, local and international funders, HIV/AIDS healthcare workers and practitioners, NGOs and SAFM. As a critical factor and unit of analysis in the study, SAFM is expected to fulfil a developmental function among its employees, their families, and the local communities. This function could be enhanced further with the collaboration between SAFM and other farmers in the distribution of basic information regarding HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases at the workplace, as well as extensive healthcare education and training for their farming personnel. Trained personnel, especially managers, are a salient factor in the implementation of organisational health and safety requirements (DoH, 2007: 6, 8; Muhlemann, et al., 1992: 478-479). / Health Studies / D.
