A Study of the Relationship Between School Building Conditions and Academic Achievement of Twelfth Grade Students in Kuwaiti Public High Schools

This study explored the relationship between school building conditions and the academic achievement of twelfth students in selected public high schools in Kuwait. The population of the study was 56 high schools (28 boys' schools and 28 girls' schools) that offered a Sciences and Arts majors. The major research questions in this study were: (a) is there a relationship between overall, cosmetic, and structural conditions and student achievement; (b) does the relationship between building condition and student achievement differ between boys' and the girls' schools; and (c) what aspects of physical building components are related to student achievement. The high school principals were given the revised Commonwealth Assessment of Physical Environment (CAPE) to assess building conditions. Student achievement was measured by final examination scores collected from the Information Center at the Ministry of Education. Pearson r, was used to determine if there is a relationship between building conditions and student achievement. This analysis revealed that a positive significant relationship exists between student achievement scores and building conditions in the boys' schools. The results of two-way ANOVA and the t-test, used sequentially to compare academic achievement in the top and bottom quartiles, found that building conditions affect significantly the achievement of students in the Sciences major. The t-test highlighted significant differences in subjects in the Sciences major among only the boys' schools. Multiple regression, used to explain the variance in student achievement, indicated that building conditions explain at least 77% of the variance of Sciences majors' achievement, but did not account for any Arts majors' achievement. Because the SES index was neither available nor introduced into a formula, this resulted in a heavier weighting given to the remaining variables. The building conditions of the girls' schools did not explain student achievement in either the Sciences or the Arts majors. Step-wise multiple regression, used to determine which physical aspects of a building's condition best predict student achievement, indicated that graffiti and roof leaks are the main predictors of achievement. Six conclusions were drawn from this study: (a) a significant positive relationship was found between the overall, structural, and cosmetic building condition and student achievement in the Sciences major when all 56 school buildings were analyzed; (b) a significant positive relationship was found between the overall and structural building condition and student achievement in the Arts major when all 56 school buildings were analyzed; (c) a significant relationship was found between building conditions and academic achievement in boy's schools in the Sciences major; (d) building conditions had a lesser impact on academic achievement in the boys' schools in the Arts major; (e) in the girls' schools, building conditions did not affect academic achievement in either the Sciences major or Arts major; and (f) graffiti and roof leaks were the main predictors of physical aspects of a building's condition that accounted for student achievement. This study then underscores the need for the Kuwaiti Ministry of Education to establish policy supporting a program of improved facilities for all new schools. More research is needed to extend the breath of findings regarding the relationship between building conditions and student academic achievement. This study should be replicated in other non-U.S. countries. / Ph. D.

The work is devoted to a comparison of tertiary education, the Czech Republic and Russia, the countries of the OECD and associated countries. Describes the current situation of higher education in the Czech Republic and Russia, aimed at analyzing the problems of financing programs at public universities. The work focuses on current problems and the need for changes in these problem areas, particularly increasing the share of private resources to finance higher education.

Syfte: Syftet med undersökningen är att skapa förståelse för hur gymnasieskolor marknadsför sig i dagens skolmarknad. Teori: Den teoretiska referensramen i denna kandidatuppsats bygger på fem olika och relevanta teorier. De fem teorierna är marknadsföring i tjänsteföretag, relationsmarknadsföring, Word-of-Mouth/eWoM och Social marknadsföring & internet och Eventmarknadsföring. Teorierna har applicerats utifrån vetenskapliga artiklar och relevant kurslitteratur som rör ämnet.  Metod: Kvalitativ forskningsstrategi har använts vid genomförandet av studien. Den kvalitativa intervjun har formulerat utifrån ett planeratsystematiskt synsätt. Studien bygger på urvalsmetoden icke- sannolikhetsbaserat urval, då enbart en bestämd respondent har intervjuats i respektive gymnasieskola. På så sätt används strategiskt urval, för att få undersökningsdeltagare som är av betydelse till undersökningsfrågan. Denna studie utgår även ifrån ett induktivt synsätt, dvs där sambandet mellan teori och empiriska data undersöks. Slutsats: Gymnasieskolan skiljer sig inte mycket åt trots att dem har olika organisationsformer samt erbjuder nischade och breda utbildningslinjer. Det är liknande typer av marknadsföring som används, såsom marknadsföring i tjänsteföretag, relationsmarknadsföring, WoM/eWoM, social marknadsföring & internet samt eventmarknadsföring. Skillnaden är att de fristående gymnasieskolorna marknadsför sig mer frekvent men inte de kommunala gymnasieskolorna. Anledningen till att fallet är så är att de kommunala gymnasieskolorna inte behöver marknadsföra sig lika mycket som de fristående gymnasieskolorna då den kommunala gymnasieskolan lever på den mängd elever som de behöver och får. I och med detta har den fristående gymnasieskolan ett “försprång” som kan vara svårt för den kommunala gymnasieskolan att komma ifatt när det gäller marknadsföring. / Purpose: The purpose of the survey is to create an understanding of how upper secondary schools’ market themselves in today's school market. Theory: The theoretical framework in this bachelor's thesis is based on five different and relevant theories. The five theories are, marketing in service companies, relationship marketing, Word-of-Mouth/eWoM, Social marketing & the internet and Eventmarketing. The theories have been applied on the basis of scientific articles and relevant course literature concerning the subject. Method: Qualitative research strategy has been used in the implementation of the study. The qualitative interview has been formulated based on a planned systematic approach. The study is based on the selection method non-probability-based selection, as only one specific respondent has been interviewed in each upper secondary school. In this way, strategic selection is used to get survey participants who are relevant to the survey question.  Conclusion: The upper secondary school does not differ much despite the fact that they have different forms of organization and offer niche and broad lines of education. There are similar types of marketing used, such as marketing in service companies, relationship marketing, WoM / eWoM, social marketing & internet and event marketing. The difference is that the independent upper secondary schools’ market themselves more frequently, but not the municipal upper secondary schools. The reason why this is the case is when the municipal upper secondary schools do not have to market themselves as much as the independent upper secondary schools as the municipal upper secondary school lives on the number of students they need and receive. As a result, the independent upper secondary school has a "lead" that can be difficult for the municipal upper secondary school to catch up when it comes to marketing.

A Study of the Responsibilities of Department Chairpersons in 5-A Public High Schools in Texas

This study identified and compared the perceptions of department chairpersons and their principals about what responsibilities should be assigned to chairpersons, what responsibilities are currently assigned to chairpersons, and the chairperson' perceived need for any additional training, administrative support, departmental support, or released time in order to fulfill responsibilities currently assigned. Principals and chairpersons from 132 of the 264 5-A public high schools in Texas were surveyed by means of a 61- item questionnaire. The questionnaire included responsibilities in ten areas: planning, evaluation, budgeting, personnel, curriculum and instruction, communications, scheduling, clerical activities, supervision, and advising. Chairpersons from English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies were included in the study. Data collected in the study were keypunched and computer-processed, generating frequencies, percentages, means, and appropriate chi-square tests of independence, and probability factors for determining significance. The following conclusions were drawn from the study. 1. There is substantial agreement between Texas principals and chairpersons about responsibilities that should and should not be assigned to chairpersons in the areas of planning, budgeting, communications, and advising. 2. There is moderate to substantial disagreement . between Texas principals and chairpersons about responsibilities that should and should not be assigned in the areas of evaluation, personnel, curriculum and instruction, and scheduling. 3. There is a general difference perceived by chairpersons in the study between what they think they should be doing as chairpersons and what they are currently assigned to do. 4. There is general agreement among chairpersons from different disciplines about responsibilities that should and should not be assigned to chairpersons in the areas of planning, budgeting, personnel, and advising. 5. Texas chairpersons perceive a greater need for administrative and departmental support than for additional training. 6. Texas department chairpersons perceive responsibilities in the area of evaluation as those for which they need the highest levels of support.

The Educational Opportunity Structure and Stratification of College Counseling at Southern California Public High Schools

This study documents how organizational strategies underlying college counseling departments modify counselors’ ability to perform their academic and college advising duties. To examine this, fifteen semi-structured, in-depth interviews with public high school counselors in Southern California were conducted. A district’s commitment to college access and opportunity, as well as parents’ expectations for maintaining a college-going culture, shaped the nature of college counseling and organizational habitus in a school. Counselors reported that access to different forms of institutional support and resources diminish or exacerbate the structural constraints known to surface in public schools. This influenced when and how counselors advised students, which offered different views of the educational opportunity structure. Additionally, findings indicate that both college preparation programs and culturally sensitive counselors work to remedy educational disparities and increase the college enrollment rates of working-class minority students.
