This thesis finds inspiration in practitioner academics such as Craig and Meyerhold, and is conceived as a practice-informed research degree, consisting of a written element and a practical element that draw on and inspire each other. That there is value in both practising and analysing an art form is argued, and ‘case studies’ are made of practitioner/theorists at either end of the genealogy traced in the research: both those at the beginning of the 20th century and those at the beginning of the 21st. A case is made for judging the work of artists such as Robert Lepage, Robert Wilson, Complicité, and Faulty Optic as exemplars of contemporary Visual Theatre practice, combining and being inspired by the twin modes of puppetness and the cinematic. Alongside case studies of these practitioners sits analysis of the practical element of the thesis: a work-inprogress piece of auteur-led Visual Theatre practice that questions and illuminates the written component of the thesis.

In this paper, I discuss the modern socio-technological state of global social control and its representation in my stop motion animated film P19. I will compare the ways in which social control has changed and remained the same from September 11, 2001 to the present. I will discuss the surveillance and control grids permeating all communication networks and how humans are interacting with them. I will conclude with an analysis of some of my techniques and processes in stop motion animation.

It is the purpose of this thesis to determine the function of marionette, puppet and shadow plays as a tool for learning in the elementary school.

This thesis is a description of the process of creating the scene design for the Theatre VCU production of Arabian Nights. It was directed by Gabriel Barre and the production ran April 11th – 27th, 2014. It follows the preproduction, build and a final evaluation of the design and the process used in creating it.

In its theoretical part, this thesis deals with possibilities of using puppets at the education process of drama education. It is aimed at the puppets using at literary text working. It sketches relation between a child and a puppet, his or her communication and working with it. It points out puppets using in the other education sphere. This thesis acquaints pupils with basic kinds of puppets, a way of their using at the education and it shows possibilities of puppets hand making. This work refers to child fantasy what can help bringing subject around and after that its using is easy. It demonstrates that a puppet can have its own place in drama education lessons which concentrate on literary. The practical part deals of research what is oriented on the drama education lessons which use activities with a puppet and without it. It approaches a child working during a school year and shows progress at his work and in relation to a puppet. The thesis brings the solution how to make it special for school. This work makes puppets importance at the education. The urge to uncover aspects of human condition permeates my work, from the fundamental curiosity of a child tearing apart their doll to uncover what lies within to continuing a quest in uncovering basic human urges through my puppet animated dramas and tragedies. There is a controversial line between the childlike and the adult-like that can be ambiguous, and at some times more discernible while other times less. I create handcrafted stop-frame puppet animations that explore self-conscious emotions such as embarrassment, shame, and envy within unpredictable life scenarios. These are animations about inner life, attempting to resolve conflicting elements of the human psyche. At first glance, these puppets might appear scary, but upon closer observation the viewer may realize it is the puppet who is scared.
