Reconstruction of holocene environmental changes in northern British Columbia using fossil midgesFleming, Erin Mattea 11 1900 (has links)
Lake sediments contain the remains of midge communities that may be used as biological proxies for inferring past environmental changes. Freshwater midges, including Chironomidae and Chaoboridae, from two alpine tarns (Pyramid Lake and Bullwinkle Lake) in the Cassiar Mountains of northern British Columbia were used to estimate Holocene palaeotemperature changes, and more specifically, to test for the presence of the Milankovitch thermal maximum, an early Holocene warm interval coinciding with peak Holocene summer solar insolation. Mean July air temperatures were reconstructed using midge-inference models developed via weighted averaging-partial least squares (WA-PLS) regression. Cold-tolerant midge taxa dominate the stratigraphies from both Pyramid and Bullwinkle Lakes; however, warm-adapted species are more common in Bullwinkle Lake. Early Holocene warming is apparent at both lakes, however it is unclear whether this is indicative of the Milankovitch thermal maximum. A decrease in temperature occurs from 8,700-7,900 cal. yr BP at Pyramid Lake, around the same time that the 8,200 cal. yr BP cooling event occurred in the northern hemisphere. During the middle Holocene, records from Pyramid Lake indicate an overall decrease in temperature, with a short period of warmer temperatures that peak at 5,100 cal. yr BP. Temperatures fluctuate little during this time at Bullwinkle Lake. A short warming phase is apparent at both lakes during the late Holocene. July temperatures are highest at 2,000 cal. yr BP (10.5°C) in Pyramid Lake and at 1,200 cal. yr BP (13°C) in Bullwinkle Lake. Thereafter, temperatures return to what they were before the warming occurred, and at Bullwinkle Lake, vary little throughout the remainder of the Holocene.

Large scale audience interaction with a Kinect sensorSamini, Ali January 2012 (has links)
We present investigation and designing of a system that interacts with big audience, sitting in a dimmed theater environment. The goal is to automatically detect audiences and some of their actions. Test results indicate that because of low light condition we can’t rely on RGB camera footage in a dimmed environment. We use Microsoft Kinect Sensor to collect data from environment. Kinect is designed to be used with Microsoft Xbox 360 for gaming purposes. It has both RGB and Infrared depth camera. Change in amount of visible light doesn’t affect data from depth camera. Kinect is not a strong camera so it has limitations that we should deal with. Viewing angles of both cameras and depth range of Infrared camera are limited. Viewing angles of depth camera are 43° vertical and 57° horizontal. Most accurate range of depth camera is 1 meter to 4 meters from camera. Non-infrared reflective surfaces cause gaps in depth data. We evaluate possibility of using Kinect camera in a large environment with big audience. “Dome 3D theater” in Norrkoping Visualization Center C, is selected as environment to investigate and test the system. We ran some tests to find the best place and best height for camera to have most coverage. Our system works with optimized image processing algorithms that use 3D depth data instead of regular RGB or Grayscale image. We use “libfreenect”, Open Kinect library to get Kinect sensor up and running. C++ and OpenGL are used as programing languages and graphics interface, respectively. Open GLUT (OpenGL Utility Toolkit) is used for system’s user interface. It was not possible to use Dome environment for every test during the programming period so we recorded some depth footage and used for later tests. While evaluating the possibility of using Kinect in Dome environment, we realized that implementing a voting system would make a good demonstration and test application. Our system counts votes after audiences raise their hands to vote for something.

Political Relations Between Turkey And Albania In The Post Cold War PeriodSulku, Mehmed 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyzes the political relations between Turkey and Albania in the post Cold War period. Political and diplomatic relations between Turkey and Albania based on mutual respect for territorial integrity and independence. This study analyzes the continuities and changes in the Turkish foreign policy towards Albania in the post Cold War era. Also changes and continuities in the Albanian foreign policy in the post Cold War period are scrutinized. This work examines the main Turkish foreign policy approaches towards Albania. Patterns of Turkish Balkan policy are examined to find out how Turkey constructed its foreign policy towards Albania after the end of Cold War. Turkey continued its traditional foreign policy according to realist and national interest-based foreign policy formulation. After 1990, Albania was in a period of a transition from its sui generis communist dictatorship regime under Enver Hoxha to an emerging democracy. Albania considered Turkey as a reliable ally in the Balkans. Turkey attached strong importance to stability and security in the Balkan region. Albania has significant role to play in Balkan region. Thus Turkey welcomed the Albanian decision on membership application to NATO and EU. Turkey tried to strength its bilateral relations with Albania and supported lbania&rsquo / s participation in regional and international organizations. This study focuses on the relations of Turkey and Albania within the framework of international and regional organizations.

Selective Area Growth of AlGaN pyramid with GaN Multiple Quantum WellsChen, Hsin-Yu January 2018 (has links)
Since Shuji Nakamura, Hiroshi Amano, and Isamu Akasaki won the 2014 Nobel prize in Physics owing to theircontributions on the invention of efficient blue GaN light emitting diodes, GaN became an even more appealingmaterial system in the research field of optoelectronics. On the other hand, quantum structures or low-dimensionalstructures with properties derived from quantum physics demonstrate superior and unique electrical and opticalproperties, providing a significant potential on novel optoelectronic applications based on the employment of quantumconfinement. In 2012, our research team at Linköping University utilized pyramid templates, which is an established approach toform quantum structures, to successfully grow GaN pyramids with InGaN hybrid quantum structures, includingquantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. This growth enabled site-controlled pyramids based on selectivearea growth (SAG). After numerous studies on the photoluminescence properties, the mature and controlled growthtechnique was proposed to be adapted for fabrication of AlGaN pyramids on which GaN hybrid quantum structurescan be hosted. This thesis is dedicated to the subsequent problems of the growth of AlGaN pyramids. It was found that there wasan undesired deposition of a considerable thickness on top the desired AlGaN pyramid with GaN multiple quantumwells. In this thesis, two different directions are explored to find the key solution with a potential of furtheroptimization. On one hand, the growth parameters such as precursors cut-off, carrier gas during cooling, temperatureholding, cooling pressure, III/V ratio, and the possible effect of GaN surfaces are investigated. However, due to theactual inherent properties of the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition reactor used, no promising parameter tuningcan been identified. On the other hand, from post-growth point of view, a KOH aqueous etching solution exhibits apositive result toward removing the undesired deposition. This etching process is suggested to be further optimized toachieve the final goal of eliminating the undesired deposition.

Vyznavač buddhismu na ošetřovací jednotce / Follower of Buddhism on unit careČOUDKOVÁ, Lenka January 2007 (has links)
The problems of buddhism on a care ward has been theme of our works, which we{\crq}ve devided in theoretical and practical part. In theoretical part, nurses and also wider public can acquiant with basic informations of buddhism. Theoretical part is devided into eight main chapters. In theoretical part we{\crq}ve reached for {\clqq}List dissimilarities in satisfying needs of buddhism confessors to health and diseases.`` In practical part we discuss reults of our research. To get data, we used technique of questionary. Content of third aim was {\clqq}Compare sister knowledge of Southbohemian and Centralbohemian region in specifications of buddhism confessor care.`` We set two hypotheses for this aim. Hypothesis no.1 considered, that nurses are able to satisfy needs of buddhist with their professionality and hypothesis no.2 considered, that nurses knowledge about care probleme in Southbohemian region is lower than in Centralbohemian region. Both hypotheses were confirmed after data processing. Pieces of knowledge from theoretical and practical part are included in the end of this work. There is also mentioned usage of work in practice {--} motivate nurses in attractive form, so they have interest to learn new informations about new cultures and ethnic communities. Nurses also to get wider general view, necessary at this time. In the end in separate chapter the {\clqq}Care specifications of buddhism confessors in sanitations`` is described, which was subject of second aim. For completion of this aim the standard of nursing care was elaborated: {\clqq}Principles of implementation on nursing care, confessing by buddhists in sanitations.``
