Performance of Turbo Coded OFDM Modulation over an Aeronautical Channel

The main objectives of Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) are increased data rate and improved spectral efficiency. In this paper we propose the transmission scheme for the physical layer to be coded Quadrature Amplitude Modulation-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (QAM OFDM) which enables high data rates and spectrum efficiency. However in high mobility scenarios, the channel is time-varying the receiver design is more challenging. In this paper pilot-assisted channel estimation is used at the receiver, with turbo coding to enhance the performance; while the effect of inter symbol interference (ISI) is mitigated by cyclic prefix. The focus of this paper is to evaluate the performance of OFDM with QAM over an aeronautical channel. The M-QAM with OFDM provides a higher data rate than QPSK hence it is chosen in this paper. The implementation is done using Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). This paper considers how the performance of Coded QAM OFDM can be enhanced using equalization to compensate for inter symbol interference, and using turbo coding for error correction.

Modulation Coding In A Radio Link And Data Transfer Application Using L2 VPN Ethernet Over MPLS In A Large Network

In this thesis work, the locations where we are unable to reach via fiber are considered for wireless transmission links. In the practical part of this thesis different modulation techniques and antenna sizes were analyzed  in order to provide the most efficient way of data transmission. The data between this wireless links was transfered using MPLS L2 VPN solution.   According to improving technology and increasing internet usage, the communication speed, which is between users and providers, becomes more inevitable for transmitting data without any delays. More than one users might use same connection line for transmitting their packets and it is able to be caused an online traffic and some delays and data loss could occur. In this circumstance, high rate internet demands would lead extra costs for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and users.   In the introduction part, a brief description for the history of communications and basic equipments for Radio Link and Fiber Optic cable are done.   In the theory part, detailed information was provided about modulation techniques and multiplexing techniques followed by general information about computer networks  and comprehensive information about OSI layers.   In the process and result parts, program outputs for Path Loss design which was used for R/L was mentioned in a detailed way. After that, Ethernet Over MPLS L2 VPN was highlighted and a simulation from point-to-point "Ethernet Over MPLS L2 VPN” was conducted in GNS3 software. Furthermore, the simulation for point-to-multipoint case was then applied  in a laboratory environment in order to achieve the desired result.   In the result part, different R/L simulation results are compared to determine the optimized modulation technique and antenna sizes which could then be merged with simulation results from the previous part.

Modelování silové sítě pro datovou komunikaci / Modelling of Power Line Communication for data transmission

Thesis deals with problems PLC (Power Line Communication) communication. It is aimed at drawing up a suitable model for testing power network PLC communication. The reader is aware of at the beginning of work with the basic principles of PLC systems, distribution and use in communication networks. Another part of the work deals with different types of interference, which occur in power networks and ways to defend against such interference. For example, an appropriate choice of modulation and coding relevant. As a source of interference in the proposed model is used AWGN channel (Additive White Gaussian Noise). Conclusion of work is dedicated to design and build a model for PLC communication. There are three models designed with different OFDM technology. Models therefore vary between different levels of key mapping in OFDM (QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM). It made a detailed description of a set of blocks that were used to build models. The behavior and functionality of the proposed models for broadband PLC communication was verified in the simulation program Matlab Simulink. Finally, it is shown the comparison and evaluation of results of each modulation.

At the same time they are having trouble obtaining more spectrum in which to provide these higher rates because of the demand for spectrum in SHF range from various mobile/cellular Personal Communications Services (PCS) as well as congress’s desire to auction spectrum and to transfer as much spectrum as possible to commercial uses. In light of these pressures the industry is in need of a modulation standard that will out perform the existing PCM/FM standard. The motivation for the present review and analysis of the performance of various coded/uncoded modulation schemes arises from this issue. Comparison of the performance of these schemes will be utilized in the following work to find a suitable solution to the existing problem.

BLIND EQUALIZATION FOR FQPSK AND FQAM SYSTEMS IN MULTIPATH FREQUENCY SELECTIVE FADING CHANNELS

With an offset sampling strategy in the receiver, the proposed blind equalization using Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) exhibits a fast convergent speed for a family of quadrature modulated systems in NLA and multipath fading channels. Feher’s patented Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (FQPSK) and Feher’s Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (FQAM) which correspond respectively to 4-state and 16-state QAM are used due to their higher Radio Frequency (RF) power and spectral efficiency in NLA channel. It has been shown that blind adaptive equalization can significantly open the eye signals in multipath frequency selective fading channels.

QAM Multi-path Characterization Due to Ocean Scattering

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / A series of RF channel flight characterization tests were recently run to benchmark multi-path performance of high-speed quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) over the ocean surface. The modulation format was differential-phase/absolute-amplitude two level polar 16 QAM. The bit rate was 100 Megabits per second with a symbol period of 40nS. An aircraft radiated the test signal at 5 different altitudes. It made two inward flights, on two different days, at each altitude with vertical and horizontal polarization, respectively. Receivers, using circular antenna polarization, were in two different locations. Analysis of the resulting data shows flat fading and frequency selective fading effects.

Analysis of LTE Radio Frame by eliminating Cyclic Prefix in OFDM and comparison of QAM and Offset-QAM

Spectral efficiency is the key factor for the development of future wireless communications. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is the multiple access technology used at physical layer of latest wireless communication technologies. Anything on the improvement or overcoming the disadvantage of the present system will be considered for the future wireless systems. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the 4th generation wireless communications and it is taken as the reference system in this thesis. The main concern of this thesis is to analyze the LTE radio frame. We designed and simulated the OFDM system with cyclic prefix, its Bit Error Rate (BER) is verified by changing the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) value and we investigated the OFDM system by eliminating the cyclic prefix. By eliminating cyclic prefix bandwidth efficiency is achieved, though using cyclic prefix in OFDM has more advantages. Filter banks are used to compensate the advantages of cyclic prefix when it is removed. Introducing Offset in QAM results in less distortion and amplitude fluctuations. We designed, simulated and compared the QAM digital modulation with Offset-QAM digital modulation its BER vs. SNR are verified using simulations on MATLAB.

The theme of this thesis is simulation of DVB-C2 transmission. The first part of this thesis is focused mainly on theory, where it describes differences between digital and analog television transmission. The project also explains principle of operation DVB-C and DVB-C2 systems with focus on channel coding a modulation. Application for simulation of DVB-C2 transmission, which is developed in the MATLAB environment is described in the second part. The last part of this thesis includes results of simulations of DVB-C2 transmission and their comparison with measured values of DVB-C transmission.

Este trabalho investiga a decodificação turbo de códigos produto construídos a partir de códigos de Reed-Solomon sobre constelações QAM. Por meio da geometria euclidiana da constelação utilizada e das relações dos elementos de campo de Galois utilizados na codificação Reed-Solomon com os símbolos pertencentes ao alfabeto de modulação, é proposto um algoritmo de decodificação que utiliza a localização geométrica dos símbolos recebidos no processo de decodificação turbo. Tanto a primeira etapa da decodificação SISO baseada no algoritmo de Chase, como a extração da informação extrínseca baseada no algoritmo proposto por Pyndiah, são tratadas pelo uso de uma abordagem geométrica sobre o espaço euclidiano. Os resultados de simulação utilizando o algoritmo proposto coincidem com aqueles usando a decomposição e análise pragmática binária, sendo que a abordagem apresentada conduz a simplificações e otimizações em relação à metodologia binária no que ser refere à implementação dos possíveis esquemas de decodificação. / This work investigates the turbo decoding of product codes built using Reed- Solomon codes in QAM constellations. Using the euclidian geometry of the constellation and the relations of the Galois field elements used in the Reed-Solomon code and the modulation alphabet, a decoding algorithm for the turbo decoding process is proposed using the geometric localization of the received symbol. Both the first stage of the SISO decoding based on the Chase algorithm, as the calculation of the extrinsic information based on the Pyndiah algorithm, are treated using the geometric approach in the euclidian space. The simulations show that this algorithm gives similar performance results as the pragmatic binary decomposition approach, and leads to simplifications and optimizations in decoding implementations schemes compared to the former.

A utilização, em sistemas de comunicações ópticas, de formatos de modulação digitais é vista, atualmente, como uma forma promissora de aumentar a eficiência espectral, frente aos diversos efeitos de degradação do sinal em fibra óptica, sem alterar a infraestrutura já implantada. É neste contexto que surge a técnica OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) que estabelece sobreposição espectral das subportadoras e, desta forma, permite a transmissão dos dados em forma multiplexada com grande eficiência espectral. No presente trabalho, foi proposta a simulação da técnica OFDM com modulação QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) no software Optisystem, versões 9.0 e 10.0. O objetivo principal da pesquisa é estudar algumas configurações de sistemas OFDM óptico, com detecção direta e coerente, visando avaliar seu desempenho sistêmico frente a efeitos de propagação. Usando as figuras de mérito BER e diagrama de constelação para estabelecer a meta de ótimo desempenho, analisamos a técnica OFDM com detecção coerente em configurações aplicáveis, principalmente, para redes ópticas de acesso com alcance estendido. Para validação dos resultados, são apresentados também estudos que relacionam as degradações do sinal em fibra óptica e a técnica OFDM. Estes resultados foram comparados com os existentes na literatura, apresentando boa concordância. / The development of digital modulation formats in optical communications systems is considered to be a promising way to increase the spectral efficiency and to combat the effects of signal degradation in optical fiber without changing the infrastructure already deployed. In this context, the technique called OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) establishes a particular spectral overlap of the subcarriers, which allows data transmission to be multiplexed with high spectral efficiency. The main objective of the research is to study some configurations of optical OFDM systems with direct detection and coherent in order to evaluate their performance against propagation effects. Using the figures of merit BER and constellation diagram to establish the goal of optimal performance, we analyze the OFDM technique with coherent detection in configurations more applicable for optical access networks with extended reach. To validate the results we also present some studies that relate the degradation of the signal in an optical fiber and the OFDM technique. These results were compared with those described in literature, showing good agreement.
