Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signal simulator : an analysis of the effects of the local environment and atmosphere on receiver positioning

Global Navigation Satellite Systems can provide position, velocity and time information to users using receiver hardware. The United States developed Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only current fully operational system; however further systems are in development. The GPS has shown considerable success for navigation, but it still has a number of problems that limit its accuracy. The two main problems are the ionosphere and local environment of the receiver. The ionosphere causes a delay and random rapid shifts in phase and amplitude (scintillation) to the signal. The local environment can provide the signal with multiple routes (multi-path) to the receiver. In this project a GPS signal simulator is developed, which models the effects of the ionosphere and multi-path on the modulated signals. The focus is made on the GPS system as the simulator measurements can be compared to the real measurements; however other systems will be considered in the future. A number of experiments investigating multi-path and ionospheric effects on a receiver’s ability to track the signals have been completed. The simulator has been used to replicate a real local multi-path environment and the results have been compared. Further investigations of the multi-path have shown a unique multi-path signature in the receiver power output. The later part of the thesis describes a case study investigating a short but rapid period of scintillation observed on three receivers based in Norway. An analysis of the multi-path environment was completed, but was found not to be the cause. The ionosphere was investigated using equipment based across Scandinavia. The equipment showed that geomagnetic conditions were disturbed at the time of the event. The GPS measurements were compared with all-sky camera data to show that the scintillation can be attributed to the GPS signal path crossing electron density structures associated with the aurora.

This synthesis of real-time telemetry monitoring with traditional ground-based post-test data analysis provides flight test engineers with near real-time, error free data while the aircraft is on station. Additionally, this approach maximizes the use of available telemetry bandwidth by allowing users to dynamically request different data sets for downloading. This paper addresses the command structure of the interface; the utilization of IRIG 106 Chapter 10 data structures in a network environment, and provides performance metrics of the test case.

Distributed Multi-path Routing with QoS Support in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

In an ad hoc networks, it is an important problem about how to increase the bandwidth utilization and guarantee Quality-of-Service. In order to increase the bandwidth utilization under the situation of limited bandwidth, we want to achieve the target by using the bitty residual bandwidth in the ad hoc networks. Hence we integrate several single paths into a multi-path that satisfies QoS requirement. In this paper, we present a policy to look up, maintain, and reroute the virtual circuit in the ad hoc networks. From the result of simulation, we obtain that our proposal indeed can increase the bandwidth utilization of ad hoc networks. But the condition of splitting also increases the overhead of connection, and affects the forced terminated ratio and packets lost ratio under mobility.

Cross Layer Peer-to-Peer Video Sharing for Vehicle Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs)

Accompanying the increasing interest on Vehicle Ad-hoc Network (VANET), there is a request for high quality and real-time video streaming on VANET, for safety and infotainment applications. Video Streaming on VANET faces extra issues, comparing to the Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET), like the high dynamic topology. However, there are also benefits in VANET, like large buffer and battery capacity, predictable motion of vehicles and powerful CPU and GPU. Video streaming on VANET can be highly improved by these features. However the poor performance of wireless networks is an critical issue for video streaming in VANET. The high packet loss probability of wireless networks significantly reduces the quality of the transmitted video. An error recovery process is proposed in our research for high quality and real-time video streaming in VANET, which is call Multi-path Error Recovery Video Streaming (MERVS). The performance improvement of wireless networks is also considered in our research. The cross layer technique is adopted in our research, in order to increase the accuracy on the network condition monitoring and to guarantee the fairness on network resource distribution. Cross layer protocols on both the Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the Network layer are proposed to improve the performance collaboratively. The contribution of my researches are: 1) I proposed a MERVS, which provides high quality and real-time video streaming; 2) several improvement techniques are also designed to improve the performance of MERVS; 3) simulation results verifies that MERVS can have a higher quality on transmitted video comparing to the existing protocols in an acceptable delay.

The Performance Evaluation of an OFDM-Based iNET Transceiver

The multi-path channel model used in the simulation experiments is based on a telemetry multi-path channel model described in the iNET Telemetry Experimental Standard document. To date, the results using the simulation have been confirmed by outdoor laboratory tests. They show that multi-path has less impact on the OFDM performance when the channel spread is within a limit of 800ns; the same specified guard interval (GI) used by 802.11a. For example, with a channel spread of 144ns (τ1) and a reflection coefficient of -0.26dB (Γ1), the Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is on the order of 2.5%. As the channel spread expands beyond the standard GI 800ns, the demodulated signal degrades. The performance penalty depends upon the channel spread factor and the total Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR).

QAM Multi-path Characterization Due to Ocean Scattering

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / A series of RF channel flight characterization tests were recently run to benchmark multi-path performance of high-speed quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) over the ocean surface. The modulation format was differential-phase/absolute-amplitude two level polar 16 QAM. The bit rate was 100 Megabits per second with a symbol period of 40nS. An aircraft radiated the test signal at 5 different altitudes. It made two inward flights, on two different days, at each altitude with vertical and horizontal polarization, respectively. Receivers, using circular antenna polarization, were in two different locations. Analysis of the resulting data shows flat fading and frequency selective fading effects.

Multipath Mitigation on an Operational Telemetry Link

Only part of these impairments are compensated by various diversity techniques, but a fast converging adaptive channel equalization is probably the best suited and most cost effective solution. This paper first presents an analysis of mobile multipath propagation in telemetry based on recorded operational signals, both at the transmitter and at the receiver sides. Then it provides performance evaluation of a novel blind equalizer, assessed by offline processing of the recorded signals. The paper focuses on typical environments at a flight test centre, which exhibit critical multipath channel characteristics, namely during parking, taxiway and flight. The channel analysis exploits the recorded signals as well as the time frequency response of the novel equalizer filter. Performance evaluation shows that the equalizer outperforms state of the art Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA). In particular, it is shown to significantly increase the telemetry link availability even in severe conditions, sometimes from nearly 0% to almost 100%, whereas the CMA fails to improve the signal quality as soon as the channel varies in time.

Dynamic Multi-channel Multi-path Routing Protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks

With the wireless mesh network in the embedded systems related applications booming in recent years, the demand of enhancing the overall end to end network traffic and ensuring a stable connection is growing. We proposed a Dynamic Multi-channel Multi-path Routing Protocol (DMMR Protocol) to decompose contending traffics over different channel, different time and different paths to enhance the end to end network traffic. Choosing channel dynamically according to the channel usage around node in the process of finding paths can avoid inter-flow and intra-flow channel competition. We tend to choose paths with less intersection nodes to reduce the probability of multiple paths are broken at same time when a single node cannot work. We can enhance end to end network traffic further by using multiple interfaces at one node. We use NS2 to test DMMR Protocol, and analyzing the overall end to end traffic when multiple connections are setting up in the network. If the network can accept a new connection, the increment of end to end traffic is same as the traffic of the new connection. In connection robust test, a single path broken will not affect other flows in same connection and the end to end traffic in the connection will recovery immediately when the broken path is repaired.
