Recherche de signatures isotopiques dans les sediments marins de l'explosion d'une supernova proche du system solaire

Un pic de 60Fe récemment observé dans une croûte ferromanganésienne a été interprété comme la trace de l'explosion d'une supernova qui aurait explosé, suffisamment proche du système solaire pour qu'elle puisse y déposer son empreinte sur la Terre, il y a 2.8 ° 0.4 millions d'années (Myr). Pour confirmer cette interprétation, d'une part avec une meilleure résolution temporelle, d'autre part en ayant accès à la mesure simultanée d'autres isotopes dans différentes phases géochimiques, les sédiments marins sont un outil particulièrement adapté. Ce travail a pour objectif de rechercher dans les sédiments marins les résidus de cette supernova sous forme d'anomalies isotopiques. Les trois principaux noyaux auxquels nous nous sommes intéressés sont l'129I, le 60Fe, et l'26Al, tous trois mesurés sous forme de rapports isotopiques par Spectrométrie de Masse par Accélérateur (SMA). Quantifier le flux des noyaux correspondant à la signature de cette supernova permettrait de mieux contraindre les modèles théoriques de nucléosynthèse stellaire. Ces résidus sont des isotopes produits par une séquence de combustions hydrostatiques pendant l'évolution stellaire et/ou par nucléosynthèse explosive lors de l'explosion de la supernova. Les conditions qui règnent au moment de l'explosion (température, densité de neutrons) permettent de penser que les supernovae pourraient être le site astrophysique du processus r.<br />L'étude en 129I a montré que la mesure de rapports 129I/127I pré-anthropogéniques nécessite un contrôle très strict des différentes sources possibles de contaminations en 129I, et ce d'autant plus lorsque l'on travaille avec de petites quantités d'iode (quelques microgrammes). Cette étude a permis de révéler un écart de plusieurs ordres de grandeurs entre la valeur pré-anthropogénique théorique et expérimentale du rapport 129I/127I dans le milieu marin. Les mesures SMA en 60Fe et 26Al ont permis d'établir, dans la phase authigène des sédiments marins, l'absence de signal en 60Fe sur la zone temporelle correspondant au signal observé dans la croûte Fe-Mn (2.4-3.2 Myr), ainsi qu'en 26Al de 2.6 à 3.2 Myr.

Production of [beta-gamma] coincidence spectra of individual radioxenon isotopes for improved analysis of nuclear explosion monitoring data

Radioactive xenon gas is a fission product released in the detonation of nuclear devices that can be detected in atmospheric samples far from the detonation site. In order to improve the capabilities of radioxenon detection systems, this work produces [beta-gamma] coincidence spectra of individual isotopes of radioxenon. Previous methods of radioxenon production consisted of the removal of mixed isotope samples of radioxenon gas released from fission of contained fissile materials such as ²³⁵U. In order to produce individual samples of the gas, isotopically enriched stable xenon gas is irradiated with neutrons. The detection of the individual isotopes is also modeled using Monte Carlo simulations to produce spectra. The experiment shows that samples of [superscript 131m]Xe, ¹³³Xe, and ¹³⁵Xe with a purity greater than 99% can be produced, and that a sample of [superscript 133m]Xe can be produced with a relatively low amount of ¹³³Xe background. These spectra are compared to models and used as essential library data for the Spectral Deconvolution Analysis Tool (SDAT) to analyze atmospheric samples of radioxenon for evidence of nuclear events. / text

Determination of actinide elements in environmental samples by ICP-MS

Methods for the determination of the actinide elements in water, biological, soil and sediment samples have been developed using on-line solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Initial applications utilised a commercially available resin, namely TRU-Spec resin, for efficient removal of the matrix prior to elution of uranium and thorium analytes. Comparative analyses of reference materials and natural water samples from Plymouth and Dartmoor demonstrated significant improvement in precision and speed of analysis by using TRU-Spec coupled to ICP-MS compared with alpha spectrometry. Further applications of the TRU-Spec resin for the determination of the transuranic actinide elements neptunium, plutonium and americium, resulted in the successful determination of 239Pu and 237Np in biological reference materials. Detection limits were 700, 850, and 600 attograms (ag) for 237Np, 233Pu, and 241Am, respectively, for a 0.5 ml sample injection, and better than 200 ag/g with 50 ml pre-concentration when sector field (SF) ICP-MS was used. A method for the selective sequential elution of uranium and plutonium was also developed to facilitate the determination of 239Pu without interference due to the 238U1H+ polyatomic ion, caused by high concentrations of 238U in sediment samples. Investigations were performed into the use of a polymeric substrate, which was dynamically coated with chelating dyes such as xylenol orange and 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol, and a silica substrate coated with permanently bonded iminodiacetic acid. The latter was used for the successful determination of uranium and thorium in certified reference material waters. However, the column was found to have a high affinity for iron, making it unsuitable for the determination of the actinides in soil and sediment samples. Subsequently, a polystyrene substrate which was dynamically coated with dipicolinic acid was used for HPLC coupled with SF-ICP-MS. Using this column it was possible to separate the various actinides from each other and from the matrix. In particular, it was possible to separate plutonium and uranium to facilitate interference-free determination of the former. The column also exhibited some selectivity for different oxidation states of Np, Pu and U. Two oxidation states each for plutonium and neptunium were found, tentatively identified as Np(V) and Pu(III) eluting at the solvent front, and Np(IV) and Pu(IV) eluting much later. Detection limits were 12, 8, and 4 fg for 237Np, 239Pu, and 241Am, respectively, for a 0.5 ml injection, and the system was successfully used for the determination of 239Pu in water, biological and soil reference materials.

Die Nukleare Analytik begann in Rossendorf im Jahr 1957 mit der Anwendung der Indikatormethode für Verteilungsuntersuchungen im Zusammenhang mit der Verarbeitung bestrahlter Kernbrennstoffe. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Forschungsreaktors stand die Entwicklung und Anwendung der Aktivierungsanalyse zur Untersuchung von Halbleitermaterialen sowie geologischer und medizinischer Proben im Mittelpunkt. Zur Verbesserung der Nachweisgrenze von Radionukliden wurden Koinzidenzverfahren entwickelt und eine unterirdische Messkammer eingerichtet. Nach Stilllegung des Forschungsreaktors wurde die Radioaktivität in der Umgebung des ehemaligen Uranbergbaues, in Materialien aus dem Rückbau von Reaktoren und anderen Kernanlagen und anderen natürlichen und technischen Proben bestimmt. / In 1957 the work in radioanalytical chemistry has been started in Rossendorf with the application of the tracer method for investigation of the distribution of nuclides in reprocessing of nuclear fuels. After put into operation of the research reactor the development and application of activation analysis became the main topic. For improvement of the detection limits of radionuclides coincidence methods has been developed and an underground counting room was build. After shut down of the research reactor the radioactivity in the environment of the former uranium mining, and in materials from the decommissioning of reactors and other nuclear equipments and further natural and industrial samples.

The Inclusive Semileptonic Decays Of The B-meson In A Cp Softly Broken Two Higgs Doublet Model

In this work, the B-&gt / X_dell ell decays are examined in the context of a CP softly broken two Higgs doublet model. The differential branching ratio, forward-backward asymmetry, CP-violating asymmetry, CP-violating asymmetry in the forward-backward asymmetry and polarization asymmetries of the final lepton in this decay are studied. The dependencies of these physical parameters on the model parameters are analyzed by paying a special attention to the effects of neutral Higgs boson (NHB) exchanges and possible CP violating effects. It has been found that NHB effects are quite significant for the tau mode and the above-mentioned observables seems to be promising as a testing ground for new physics beyond the SM, especially for the existence of the CP-violating phase in the theory.

Nuclear Dissipative Dynamics In Langevin Approach

In this thesis Langevin approach is applied to analyze the nuclear dissipative dynamics in fission and fusion reactions. In these investigations, the nuclear elongation coordinate and the corresponding momentum are chosen as collective variables. By considering changes in these variables the decay rate of fission and the formation probability of fusion for heavy ion reactions are calculated. These calculations are performed using simulation techniques and the results thus obtained are compared with the corresponding results of analytic solutions.

Multidimensional quantum tunnelling is an important tool that is used in many areas of physics and chemistry. Sub-barrier fusion reactions of heavy-ions are governed by quantum tunnelling. However, the complexity of the structures of heavy-ions does not allow us to use simple one-dimensional tunnelling equations to and the tunnelling probabilities. Instead of this one should consider all the degrees of freedom which affect the phenomenon and accordingly the intrinsic structure or the deformation of the nuclei must be taken into account in the modelling of heavy-ion fusion. These extra degrees of freedom result in a coupling potential term in the Schrodinger equation of the fusing system. In this thesis 16O + 238 U system is considered. Only the rotational deformation of Uranium is assumed and the coupling potential term is calculated for this system by using two diffrent potential types, namely the Woods-Saxon potential and the double folding potential. Using this term in the Schrodinger equation fusion probability and theoretical cross section are calculated. A discussion that addresses then necessity of multidimensional formulation is given. Besides this point the effects of the choice of the potential type are shown.

Matrix Quantum Mechanics And Integrable Systems

In this thesis we improve and extend an algebraic technique pioneered by M. Gaudin. The technique is based on an infinite dimensional Lie algebra and a related family of mutually commuting Hamiltonians. In order to find energy eigenvalues of such Hamiltonians one has to solve the equations of Bethe ansatz. However, in most cases analytical solutions are not available. In this study we examine a special case for which analytical solutions of Bethe ansatz equations are not needed. Instead, some special properties of these equations are utilized to evaluate the energy eigenvalues. We use this method to find exact expressions for the energy eigenvalues of a class of interacting boson models. In addition to that, we also introduce a q-deformation of the algebra of Gaudin. This deformation leads us to another family of mutually commuting Hamiltonians which we diagonalize using algebraic Bethe ansatz technique. The motivation for this deformation comes from a relationship between Gaudin algebra and a spin extension of the integrable model of F. Calogero. Observing this relation, we then consider a well known periodic version of Calogero&#039 / s model which is due to B. Sutherland. The search for a Gaudin-like algebraic structure which is in a similar relationship with the spin extension of Sutherland&#039 / s model naturally leads to the above mentioned q-deformation of Gaudin algebra. The deformation parameter q and the periodicity d of the Sutherland model are related by the formula q=i{pi}/d.

The Polarization Properties Of The Final State Particles In The Rare Radiative B-meson Decay

A general analysis of the photon and lepton polarizations in the rare Bs &amp / #8594 / &amp / #61543 / l+l- decay by using the most general model independent form of the effective Hamiltonian is presented. The total and the differential branching ratios for these decays, when photon is in the positive and negative helicity states, are studied. The sensitivity of &quot / photon polarization asymmetry&quot / and the longitudinal, transverse and normal polarization asymmetries of final state leptons, as well as lepton-antilepton combined asymmetries in Bs &amp / #8594 / &amp / #61543 / l+l- decay to the new Wilson coefficients are also investigated. It is shown that all these physical observables are very sensitive to the existence of new physics beyond SM and their experimental measurements can give valuable information about it.

The Hamiltonian hi- erarchy method is used to get the real energy eigenvalues and corresponding wave functions.
